, UNITED STATES'QPATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ALLISON PATTERSON, or UVALDE, TEXAS.
WASHBOILER.
Ta a-ll whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that l, THOMAS ALLISON PAT- TnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uvalde, in the county of Uvalde and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashboilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
An object of the invention is to provide a wash boiler wherein an efficient circulation of the water is secured, to insure the proper cleansing of the fabrics under conditions which will not involve the injury of those of fine or delicate texture and suitable for use either with an open fire or any stove, range or like heating apparatus, and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the complete apparatus.
Fig. 2 is avertical central sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan view. 7
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The apparatus consists essentially of a boiler 10 which is preferably tapered toward its bottom and rests upon a stand or support 11 beneath which the heating apparatus may 7 be located, and a clothes receptable 12 suspended within the boiler and provided with a conical perforated bottom 13 from the center of which extends a vertical flue 1 f projecting at its upper end through acentral opening 15 in the cover 16 of the boiler where it is fitted with a removable cap 1 1.
The support preferably consists of a flanged ring 17 from which depend legs 18 and the space within said frame and hence below the boiler may be inclosed by a shield or housing 19 having draft and ventilating openings 20 and 21 to provide for the necessary circulation of the air, particularly to insure proper combustion when the device is used in connection with an open lire.
The boiler is provided with suitable handles 22 to facilitate the transportation of the same and projecting inwardly from the walls thereof is an annular ledge 23 upon which rests an outwardly directed flange 24 at the upper edge of the clothes receptacle Specification of Letters Patent.
12, the walls of thelatter being perforated I as shown at 25 to permit the free circulation of'water throughout the contents of the receptacle. i r
At its upper end the flue is provided with one or more outlet openings 27 to permit of the escape of excess steam pressure with any water driven upwardly through the flue by l the formation of steam in the Space below the conical bottom 13, and the opening in Patented Feb. 22, 1921.
Application filed June 8, 1920, Serial No. 387,426.
the cover of the boiler is provided with a funnel or hopper 28 to receive water which escapes from the flue anddischarge the same upon the surface of the contents of the clothes receptacle. The cover-is also provided with suitable handles 29.
In operation, the required quantity of water having been placed in the boiler and fabrics in the clothes receptacle, the application of heat will result in the generation of steam in the compartment below the bottom of the clothes receptacle and an upward circulation of water and steam through the central flue and around the clothes receptacle, the water being discharged fromthe flue and from the passage around the clothes recep' tacle through the perforations therein, upon and through the fabrics in the clothes receptacle to percolate therethrough, but owing to the fact that the fabrics in said receptacle will tend to close or block to a certain extent the perforations both in the flue and receptacle wall, especially near the bottom thereof, a certain percentage ofthe water influenced by the upward pressure of the steam will rise through the flue and, being discharged from the upper end thereof, will fall into the funnel or hopper on the cover and thereby will be discharged upon the upper surfaces of the fabrics in the receptacle to supplement the circulation induced through the perforations 25 of the receptacle wall and those in the wall of the flue, to the end that the accumulations of dirt upon the fabric will be disengaged therefrom and carried downward with the water through the perforations in the bottom 13 and into' the bottom of the boiler, from whence the deposit may subsequently be removed.
It will be observed that the clothes receptacle which is supported within the boiler faces to the action of the water and steam through the perforations in said parts and a consequent thoroughness of exposure of the fabrics in the clothes receptacle to the action of the cleansing liquid.
What is claimed is V A wash boiler of the fountain type comprising an outer water receptacle of downwardly tapered form, a coverfor the water receptacle having a central opening, a flange projecting inwardly from the side wall of the Water receptacle near the upper edge thereof, an inner tapered clothes receptacle having a conical perforated bottom and provided at its upper edge with a rim resting upon the flange to suspend the clothes receptacle in the water receptacle with its side wall in substantial parallelism with and spaced from the side wall of the water receptacle, a central fountain tube extending vertically from the bottom of the clothes receptacle to and through the opening in the cover of the water receptacle, the side wall and bottom of the clothes receptacle being wholly exposed to the contents of the water receptacle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 7
