BOTTLE-CAPPING DEVICE.
seazos.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1921.
Application filed September 7, 1920. Serial No. 408,650.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER H. WAMPLER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Capping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my invention is to provide adevice or machine for capping bottles, that is simple and efficient in con-' struction and inexpensive to manufacture. It is convenient, positive and powerful in operation, and may be used equally well in the factory and the home for closing the mouths of bottles and jars. v 7
It is another object of my invention to provide an efiicient and readily visible indicator for correctly adjusting the bottle capping mechanism to various sized bottles.
Other important and incidental objects will be brought out in the following speci fication and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims. v
In the accompanylng drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational View of my bottle cap-- ping device in the act of capping a bottle. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the upper portion of the capper, showing the cam in its raised position. And Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my bottle capping device.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corres onding parts. j
eferring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 desi ates a base upon the front portion of which a bottle 2 is placed, and which terminates at its rear end in an upright tubular portion 3 which receives an upright rod or standard 4 that isfirmly held in the latter by a set screw 5. The base 1 is adapted to rest upon a table, stand or other supporting structure.
Vertically movable along the rod 4 is a slide 6. A vertical bore or hole in the rear portion of the slide receives therod 4, to which it may be firmly secured in an adjusted position by means of a set screw 7.
The slide 6 has a pendant portion 8 that projects over the top of the bottle. Vertically movable through a hole in the outer enlarged end of the pendant portion 8 of the slide 6, is a plunger 9 on the lower'end of which is screwed a cap-ap lying head 10. A coil spring 11 surroun s the plunger 9 said pendant portion.
ing head 10 down over the cap l2of a bottle,
to secure it firmly and properly thereon, the following means are provided. Preferably pendant portion 8, one on each side thereof, are the. extreme front portions of two cam extensions 14, '14 of a lever 15 provided with a longitudinal groove 16 in its rear porsecured by a bolt 13 to the outer end ofthe tion to receive the upper enlarged end of an 1 operat ng rod 17 that is secured to said lever by a pivot pin 18. [(See Figs. 1 and3.)
The ends of the cam extensions 14,14 are so formed that when the outer end of the lever 15 is pulled downwardly by the rod 17, they willxpress upon the top of the cap-applying head 10 of the plunger 9 to forceit over the top 12 of the bottle. And as further 1 pressure is applied to the outer end of the lever 15, the outwardly bulged peripheries of the front ends of the cam extensions 14, 14 will press the cap firmly and evenly over the bottle mouth to thoroughly seal it. It is 7 thus seen that the pressure which the cam brings to bear upon the bottle cap is positive and powerful.
In order that the slide 6 may be set on the standard 4 ata point where the bottle capping mechanism just described, may perform its function in the most eflicient manner, there is formed on the bottom part ofthe slide an inwardly projecting reduced portion 19. Now when the latter is on a level with the top of the bottle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it indicates to the operator that the slide 6 should be set at that position on the standard 4 by tightening the set screw 7 r. This indicator thus reveals to the I operator the position which the maker of the device has found to be the proper one for the slide 6 during the bottle capping operation.
While the lever 15 may be operated by. the hand to cap a bottle, it may also be conveniently actuated by a foot pedal 20 through piece 22. Through alink chain 23, which' may be removed for the substitution of one of a different size, the eye piece 22 is connected to a hook 24 secured to the foot pedal 20. The pressure of the foot upon the outer end of this pedal 20 will draw the lever 15 downwardly against the pressure ofa coil spring 25 that surrounds the rod 17 between the supporting member 21 and a stop element 26 secured to the upper end of said rod. Therefore, when the pressure of the foot is released upon the pedal 20, the compressed spring 25, by virtue of the upward pressure which it exerts against the stop ele- V ment 26, Wlll return the leverand cam to their inoperative positions shown in Fig. 2, after the bottle has been capped.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. In a device of the type described, the
combination with a standard, of a vertically adjustable slide thereon, a vertically movable plunger in said slide, a cap-applying head on the lower end of said'plunger, and
a cam lever pivotally secured to said slide beyond the standard and plunger, adapted to engage said cap-applying head on the plunger to force a caplon 'a bottle.'
' v '7 2.'In a device of the type described, the
combination with a standard, ofa vertically adjustable slide thereon, a vertically mov able plunger in said slide, a cap-applying head on the lower end of said plunger, av
cam lever pivotally' secured to said slide beyond the standard and plunger, adapted to engage said cap-applying head for the purpose specified, and a spring surrounding said plunger between the top of said slide and the head of said plunger, to return the latter to its normal position after being pressed down by the cam lever.
In a device of the type described, the j 7 combination with a standard, of a vertically adjustable slide thereon, means carried by 7 said slide for forcing a cap on a bottle, and
an inwardly projecting lug on the slide for registry with the top of the bottle for indicating the proper position of said slide during the bottle capping operation. i
5. In a device of the type described, the combination with-a standard, of a vertically adjustable slide thereon, a pendant portion on said slide, thatprojects over a bottle, a plunger vertically 'movable through a 'hole 1n said. pendant portion, a cap-applying 7 head carried by the lower end of said plunger, a lever, a pair of forward cam extensions onsaid lever, andmeans located beyond the standard and plunger for pivotally securing 1 said; cam extensions tofthe V pendant portion of said slide, one on each.
side thereof, to: engage the cap-applying head on the plunger for the purpose specified. r r p 7 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2nd day of September,'1920.
Witness: V o 7 HOWARD S. SMITH.
