Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application led June 30, 1920. Serial No. 393,136.
10 all w 71cm t may concern Be it known that I, JGHN C. SHAMnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVoonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shuttles and the primary object of the invention is to provide the shuttle with means so as to improve the wearing properties thereof, and .accordingly the invention resides in providing either the top or bottom surface, or both, of the shuttle with strips or pieces or plates of fiber, rigidly secured to the shuttle so as to form practically an integral part thereof.
The invention further aims to provide simple, economical and effective means for securing the fiber in position on the shuttle, and to also secure the ends of the fiber so that same cannot move away from thel vention.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention the shuttle body S is formed with a series of holes 2 into which dowel pins 3 are secured at one end. The opposite ends of the dowel pins project beyond the surface of the shuttle `and into holes t of the fiber pieces and the shuttle faces.
For the purpose of securing the ends of the fiber pieces inV position and against all movements, same are shouldered at 6 by reducing the ends of the ber, which shoulders are overlapped by tongues V7 formed by undercutting the inner walls of the usual metallic points, tips or end pieces 8 which are applied to the shuttle ends.
As depicted inFig. 8, the fiber ends may be tapered or beveled as indicated at 9 and the metallic end piece S is provided with a corresponding tapered or inclined tongue 10, which overlaps the tapered end 9 of the fiber piece.
It will be understood that the holes 4 formed in the fiber pieces are predeterminately spaced so as to correspond to the spacing of the pins 3 borne by the shuttle. so that the fibercan first have the glue applied thereto and then be applied to the pins and forced thereover and into engagement with the shuttle faces. The end pieces 8 and 8 of the shuttle are then secured in position so as to in each instance overlap the reduced endsof the liber, whereby the latter will be held in position and at the same time the metallic end pieces will form a flush joint with the liber soV as to not leave any projection likely to catch or obstruct the shuttle movements. bviously the liber is cut away where necessary in order to expose the shuttle interior and to conform to the normal upper and lower faces of the shuttle body.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a shuttle, a body having pins projecting from a face thereof, a fiber wearing plate having holes extending through its inner face and predeterminately spaced to receive the pins, the outer face of the wearing plate being smooth, said plate having its ends reduced in thickness, and metal end tipsfor the body having reduced parts which overlap the reduced ends of the plate and lie flush with the outer surface of the plate.
2. In a shuttle, pins projecting from a face of the shuttle, a fiber plate having holes extending part way therein to receive the pins, metal end tips for the shuttle, and means whereby said tips hold the plate ends against movement.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN C. SHAMBOVV. -Witnesses:
