FREDE ICK DOAM MARTIN, or KANSAS CITY, MIssoUnr.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
eeaers.
Application filed February 16, 1820.
To all who met may concern."
Be it known that I, FREDERICK DOADI MAR- TIN, a citizen of the United. States, iand a resident of the city of Kansas City, county of Jackson, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment fasteners, and has for its object the provision of agarment fastener which is simple in structure, economic of manufacture and highly eflicient in use. -Another object is the provision of a method of fastening in fixed relation the adjacent ends of fabric.
7 ()ther objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a top plan view of the gromet used in the invention,
Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional view of the gromet applied to a fabric, and
Fig. 3, a perspective view of the invention.
My invention is designed primarily for use on butchers and bakers aprons and the like, and is intended to afiord a simple and readily operated means of securing the ends of the apron in fixed relation while being worn, and to afford a rapid and easy means of loosening the same. To this end I provide a gromet which is secured to. the fabric 7 in the usual manner, in which gromets are secured in fabric members. The gromet comprises an enlarged portion 8, connected by a neck 9 with a reduced eye '10. This gromet, constructed as described, is secured in the fabric at the places where adjacent edges approach each other. A string or cord 11, or other suitable member, is pro vided, which has a knot 12 formed at its opposite ends. The knot is first inserted through the enlarged portion 8 and then the string is drawn along the neck 9 until the same engages in the eye 10. The knot is of such a size as to prevent its passage through the eye 10, and the garments are thus held in fixed relation to each other. In use, one end of the string may be permanently fastened to the apron or garment Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatented Feb. 15, 1921. Serial No. 359,002.
with which used, and the free end provided with the knot, in which case the gromets- 8 will be fastened to the garment at only one sic e. 7
It has been learned from experience that the aprons which are now used, in which strings are permanently fastened to the adjacent meeting edges of the garment, are frequently removed by the wearer without unfastening the strings. This is especially the case where the strings have become knotted. When these aprons in which the strings have become knotted are collected for laundrying, a great deal of work is necessary and a great deal of time consumed in untying the knotted strings before the aprons can be washed. By the use of my invention, this time-which is lost in unfastening the knotted strings is saved, and the actual cost of laundrying the garments thereby greatly diminished.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters l atent is 2-- 1. Garment fastening means comprising a knotted member and a gromet adapted to be fastened to a garment, said gromet having an enlarged and a restricted portion, said garment being retained in position by passing said knot through the enlarged portion and drawing said member into the restricted portion, substantially as described.
2. Apron fastening means comprising a cord and a gromet adapted to be secured to the meeting edges of said apron, said cord having a knot and said gromet having an enlarged portion and a restricted portion, said edges being held in fixed relation by passing said knot through the enlarged portion and drawing it over to bear against the restricted portion, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a garment having meeting edges, gromet adapted to be secured in said garment adjacent one of said edges, said gromet having an enlarged portion and a reduced portion connected thereknotted cord adapted to be fixed to the other edge of said garment, the .knot passing through the enlarged portion and seating against said reduced portion to retain said edges in fixed relation, substantially as described.
V 4:. In combination with an apron having meeting edges, a gromet adapted to be secured in said apron adjacent one of said edges, said gromet having an enlarged portion and a reduced portion connected therewith by means of a restricted neck; and a knotted cord attachable to the other edge of said apron, the knot being adapted to 15 pass through the enlarged portion and seat against said reduced portion to retain said edges in fixed relation. 7
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in thepresence 20 of two subscribing Witnesses.
FREDERICK DOAM MARTIN.
