Description

R. C. SIMMONS.
DIE. APPLICATION FILED NOV-17. l9-
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RALPH C. SIMMONS, 0F BEVERLY. MASSACHUSETTS. ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, OF PATERSON, NEW JER- SEY. A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
To alZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH C. SIMMONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and tntc of Massachusettahave invented certain I'm' provementsih Di'es, of which the following description, in connection with the; acconr panying drawingais aspecifi'catiou, like reference characters on the drawings indicatingdike parts-in the several figures.
his invention relates to dies and especially. to cutting dies. in which a wall terminates at onev extremity in a cutting edge and has at the. othen a. handle b which it may be manipulated and to which operating pressure is. applied.
In such dies it may be desired, to remove at. one time all the pieces of out. material which may have gathered Within the wall oi, the die as a: result of successive opera tions. Such occasion may arise when the cut pieces are to be supplied to the magazine of a machine which. operates. on them.
An object of: the invention. is to provide an. arrangement of the, die and handle whereby access may readily be had to the out material held in thepdie. To attain this object. I so attach. the handle to the die that it may be caused to occupy a, position oppo site the die opening for the cutting operation, clurhig said handle approaches or is in contact with the die wall, or a position at one side of the opening to free the die for the removal of the out material. As illustratedhereim, the handle, or a cross bar or: member carrying said handle, is pivoted at one side of the die and at the opposite side is separabl secured by some such means as a latch.
Another object of theinvention is to render the securing means for the die handle constantly associated with the die controllable with a minimum effort and without the necessity for shifting to any marked extent by the operator his grip upon the handle from that existin during the cutting relation tothat for t e removal of the cut material. To this end I preferably mount the latch upon the handle and so 10- cate the actuating portion thereof that it may be engaged by one finger of the operator without changing the position of the hand as a whole. The present embodiment of the invention shows the finger piece of the latch extendin in the same general direction as the ham is but bein curved outwardly therefrom to give an efiective engaging surface for the operators little finger.
A further object of the invention is to so arrange the handle that while capable of release as already described, it shall be so curely fixed with relation. to the die during the cutting operation. Therefore, in addition. to the hinged connection, 1 furnish means for preventing lateral movement of the handle upon the (lie when they are latched together. This may consist of such engaging means as a projection or projec tions upon one of the elements entering :1 dc ression or depressions in the other.
no of the various possible forms. of the invention appears in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved die;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, parts being broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the die with the handle removed.
it 10 appears the body portion of a die, this consisting of a side wall surrounding an opening of the form of the object to be produced, in the present case the lift of a shoe heel, this wall terminating at its lower portion in a cutting edge 12. Near the upper edge of the die is a lu 1.4 projecting horizontally and being perforated to receive the pivot which connects the handle portion. The handle proper l6 rises vertically from the center of a cross bar 18, this bar above the lug 14 extending at 20 beyond the die wall and being provided with a pair of depending lugs 2222 so spaced from one another as to lie upon opposite sides of the lug 14 and having perforations to receive a pivot bolt 24 which also enters the opening in the lug 14:. Between lugs 26 at the opposite end of the cross bar from the portion 20 is pivoted a securing member or latch 28 having a hooked end 30 formed to enter a recess 32 in the wall of the die. To hold the latch projection in engagement with its recess a spri 34 is located between the latch above its pivot and an abutment workman ma 36 rising from the cross bar. The finger piec'eBSof the latch extends upwardly in the same general direction as the handle 16 but at its extremity is curved outwardly to rive an effective engagino s rface for the finger of the operator. W hen the body of the die and the handle are in their normal or cutting relation, they are held against movement over one another laterally by posite slots or depressions 40, 40 formed in one of the bin ed elements, here shown as the die, into w .ieh enter projections 42, 42'
until it is full. Then, without changing the position of the hand upon the handle, the engage the latch portion 38 with his little finger, shifting the latch about its pivot until the projection 30 is withdrawn from the recess in the die body. This allows the cross bar and handle to be swung about its hinged portion, entirely freeing the up per die opening through which the cut material may easily be removed. When the handle and cross bar are swung back to their normal position the rounded edge of the latch rides over the edge of the die wall and the spring 34 seats the projection 30 in its recess to lock the parts together.
Havin .thus described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a die having an opening unobstructed within its wall, of a handle attached to the die at each side of the opening andbeingmovable to occupy either an operatin position in which it bridges the die-wa 1. closing the opening against the removal'of cut material or a position free of the opening to permit the removal of said material.
2. The combination with a die having an opening, of a handle pivoted to the die to swing either opposite the openin into contact with the edge of the die-wal or to one side thereof.
3. The combination with a die including a wall provided with a cutting edge, of a handle therefor, and a hinged connection between the die and handle permitting said handle to rest normally upon the edge of the wall opposite the cutting edge.
4. The combination with a die, of a handle therefor, a hinged connection between the die and handle, and means independent dle and a hinge for movabl of the hinge for securing said die and handle.
5. The combination with a die, of a handle therefor, a hinged connection between the die and handle and a latch for securing said die and hen e.'
6. The combination with a die, of a cross bar extending across the die, a handle car- 8. The combination with a die for constant association, of a handle, means for gnovably connecting the handle and die, and
retaining member movable with the handle and cooperatingwith the die, said member having a finger piece extending in the same general direction as the handle.
9. The combination with a die for constant association, of a handle, means for movably connecting the handle and die, and a latch movable with the handle and 006perating with the die, said latch having a finger piece extendin in the same general directionas the hen le and its extremity being curved outwardly fromthe handle;
10. The combination with a die havin an opening, of a handle, means for attac ing the'handle to the die at each side of the openin said handle being movable 'to occupy eit or an operating osition opposite the opening or a position cc of the opening to permit the removal of cutmaterial, said handle and die having enga ing means to prevent lateral movement ogthese elements.
11. The combination with a die, of a hen dle therefor and a bin ed connection between the die and hand e, said handle and die being provided with means for relieving the bin e of lateral strain. 1
v 12. e combination with a die, of a henattaching the handle to the wall of the ie, said handle and die being provided with a coiiperatlng projection and depression.
13. The combination with a die having slots across op osite sides of its wall, a cross bar entering t e slots, a handle carried by the cross bar, and means for movably secpring the cross bar in engagement wit the s ots.
14. The combination with a die havin an opening, of a, handle pivoted to the die to swing either opposite the openin or to one side thereof, the die and handle eing provided with a projection and depression which cotiperate when the handle is opposite the die openin 15. The combination with a die havin'gan ing and opening, of Lt handle for o ierating the die mounted thereon to move eit er opposite the opening into operating engagement with the die well or to one side of said opening.
16. The combination with a die having an opening, of a bar extending across the open being pivotelly connected at one extremity to the die. a handle carried by the bar, and a securing device mounted upon the bar at the end opposite the connection to the 10 die.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
RALPH C. SIMMONS.
