PATENT OFFICE.

Application niet?, November 83,
To all whom z'tmay concern. n
Be it known that I2 IPHUs HARVEY HALL, residin at Toronto, 1n the county of York, in the tr'ovince of Ontario, Canada,v have 5 invented certain new ments in Stocking-T the following is the specification.
y invention relates to improvements 1n stocking toe guards and the object of the invention is to prevent the excessive wear of the big toe within the toe of the stocking which will quickly form holes in the stocking toe and thus prevent holes being` formed and useful Improveany quicker in this part of the stocking than.
in any other part which is subject to ordinary wear an thus increase the life of the stocking as a whole and it consists essentially of the arran ement and construction of parts as hereinafer more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the stocking applied to the foot and showing my toe guard in place within the stocking and in section.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a foot and my toe guard in position on the big toe.
ig. 3 is a rspective view showing a portion of the Eig toe of a foot and my toe guard in the initial position Aemployed in placing the guard in place upon the big toe of the foot.`
Fig. 4 is a plan view of my toe guard before applyingit to the foo ig. 5 is a perspective view of my toe guar folded into the position it assumes i when on the big toe of the foot.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the va' rious figures. 40 l indlcates a foot, 2 a stocking or sock foot which is laced upon the foot 1. and 3 is my toe guar The toe guard 3 is formed preferably of a knitted fabric and is tubular in form as clearly seen in ligs. 4 and 5 the central portion of the -f ard 3 being contracted at 4 and formeclby a ribbed stitch so as to make that portion of the guardelastically contractible. The portions 5 and 6 are knitted with a plain stitch the ends 7 5o and 8 being contracted in the form of a stocking toe. When the guard is placed in position upon the big toe the end of the guard such as at 7 is placed against the tip of the toe and infolded or tucked in as indicated in Fig. 3 by pressure against the toe oe Guards, of which 'b peeiilcatea Batters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1921. 1:91a.Y .serial No. 341,133. f
the guard being gradually drawn over the portion 5 fits within the porb portion 4 extending the toe approximately in a drawal of the guard. The stocking is then drawn onto the foot in the usual manner.
y this meansy it will be seen that the guard forms a two-ply thickness b the toe of the foot and the toe Aof the stocking and that when in use the frictional contact of the toe with the inner ply tends to move such inner ply in contact with the outer ply which is held relatively stationary by its frictional contact with the toe of the stocking and, therefore, any frictional wear which does take place is between the outer and inner ply of the guard thus taking all frictional wear off the stockin toe.
Also by forming my guardg tubular with closed ends one portion of which is infolded within the other portion the formation of a seam connecting the outer and inner portions or plys tqgether at the edge 9 is dispensed with. lso the action of the foot will have no tendency to ruck up this edge of the guard. It will be readily understood that if the guard were formed of a single layer the action of the foot would have a, tendency to curl up the lower portion of the guard corresponding to the portion where the fold 9 is formed which would thus render the guard very uncomfortable and also produce an increased frictional wearing effect upon the stocking at that point which would quickly wear holes.
It is essential to form the stocking toe guard so that there will be no portion thereof which will produce an increased resistance such as a seam or any curled up portion which as above stated would be uncomfortable and also have an increased wearing effect.
From this description it will be seen that I have devised a very'simple form of guard which will overcome the excessive wear produced by the big toe of the foot against the extreme end of the toe portion of the stocking and which at the same time will be comfortable, easily placed in position, and which will be cheap and durable.
What I claim as my invention is.
1. A stocking toe guard comprising two 110 toe cap portions reverseiy set oneeto ther other and provided with an intermediate other and formed integral and adapted to contracted elastic portion. be infolded one within the other to fit a toe 3. A stocking toe guard comprising two 10 of the foot and to be inserted between the toe cap portions reversely set one to the 5 toe ofthe foot and the stocking. other formed of knitted fabric and inter- 2. A stocking toe guard comprising two connected with a ribbed knitted ortion.
toe cap portions reversely set one to the IPHUS HARVE HALL.
