A. PFEIFFER.
GONG 0R SIGNAL.
APPLlCATION FILED Aue.2s, 1920.

PATENT QFFICE.
ADOLPH PFEIFFER. O33 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GONG OR SIGNAL.
Application filed August 23, 1926.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. AnoLiu-r Prnirrnn, subject of the present Government of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the coinuiy of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (longs or Signals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gongs or signals particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited in. its use in clocks and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved gong or signal of this character embodying a wire gong and a supplemental signal such as a bell, each of which are adapted to be simultaneously actuated or sounded by the same hammer and on the same stroke of the hammer.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty, in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the seve a l. parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention and in which-- Figure l is. a view partly in side elevation. partly in section and partly broken away of one form of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1..
Fig. 3 is a view of another form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a supporting post or pillar of any desired size and configuration and connected therewith is a wire gong 11 preferably in tl e form of a spiral.
Connected also with the support 10 is a flexible member 12 which extends along one of the coils of the gong 11 the outermost face of this member 12 for a portion of its length is flush with the outermost face of the adjacent coil of the gong 11. and connected to the free end of. the element 12 is a bell 13 of any desiredconstruction but preferably consists of a hollow body haw ing a ball or element l t freely movable therein.
In use, when the hammer 15, which is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Serial No. 405,370.
actuated in any desired or suitable manner, is brought into operation and strikes the gong wire 11, it will strike the coil of the gong at a point where the element 12 stands flush therewith so that the hammer in striking the gong 11 will also strike the flexible member 12 to vibrate the same to sound the bell 13 so that the hammer with a single stroke will simultaneously actuate both the gong and the bell.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 the gong wire 11 is coiled so as to leave a comparatively large space 16 at the center thereof and in this space 16 is arranged a bell 17, which is secured to the free end 18 of the gong wire 11 in any suitable manner such as by means of a clip or fastening device 19. A clapper or hammer 20 is connected with the bell 1'? in any suitable manner and is preferably arranged so as to operate upon the outside of the bell.
In this form of the invention when the hammer 15 strikes the gong wire 11 it willsound the gong and at the same time will vibrate the coils of the gong. This vibrating movement of the gong wire will be imparted to the bell 17 to vibrate the latter and cause the clapper or hammer 20 to vibrate against the outside of the'bell 1T there-by sounding the same.
While the preferred form of the invention has herein been shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, withinv the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of this invention.
lVhat is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a wire gong, a supplemental audiblc signal. and a hammer operable to strike said gong and simultaneously sound both of the signals.
2. In combination, a wire gong, a bell, and a single hammer adapted to strike the gong for simultaneously sounding the gong and ringing the bell.
3. In combination, a wire gong, a flexible support, bell connected with the support, and a hammer adapted to strike both the gong and the flexible support to sound the former and vibrate the latter to actuate the bell.
4. In combination, a Wire gong, a flexible support, a bell connected with the support,
5 a portion of the gong and the support being substantially flush with each other, and a hammer adapted to simultaneously strike both the gong and flexible support to sound the gong and ring the bell.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 10 name to this specification on this 21st day of August, A. D. 1920.
ADOLPH PFEIFFER.
