To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HAYES, a citizen of the United States,and resident of Proslindale, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Blindstitch Sewing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawmg representing like parts.
This invention relates to improvements in blind stitch sewing machines for telling a superimposed layer upon a base layer 01 material and the object thereof is to provide a novel means for presenting the superimposed layer to the path of the needle whereby the line of stitching in the superimposed layer may be formed at a greater distance under the edge thereof than has heretofore been possible, thus providing a machine which is capable of sewing a lining having a piped edge upon a garment or for sewing such seams as are employed to secure the lining to the bottoms of coats or for doing turned edge Work.
In usual stitch sewing machines the superimposed layer is felled to the base layer by a reciprocating and laterally v1- brating needle, the Work being presented to the needle in such a manner. that the superimposed layer is guided across the path of the needle in one of its paths of reciprocation While the base layer is presented by a bender to the needle in the other path of its reciprocation. y
The present invention contemplates broadly the presentation of the superimposed layer to the needle by an instinnientality such as a bender located upon the same side of the work as the needle and. Which will engage said superimp sed layer and intermittently thrust the under surface of the infoldededge thereof into the path E the needle.
Another object of the invention is to proride means which will bend upwardly the edge or the superimposed layer and guide the same adjacent to the path of the needle so that the instrumentality for thrusting the layer into the path of the needle may be utilized to cause the needle to penetrate the under surface of the superimposed layer at a considerable distance back from the edge thereof, thereby producing a seam suitable for use on the bottoms of coats.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing a Work support with Work ongaging surfaces lying in dilierent planes and a presser foot having Work engaging surfaces also lying in different planes and cotiperating respectively With those of the Work support in the bending up of the edge of the superimposed layerin the manner aforesaid.
A. further feature of the invention consists in providing a presser foot in Which achannel extends from beneath the major and minor toes of the presser toot through the heel portion, thus providing a guideway for the upturned edge of the superimposed layer, means preferably being provided for adjusting the Width of said channel to accommodate different thicknesses of material.
Another feature of the invention consists in. pivotally supporting an upper bender in the head of the sewing machine and providing means for reciprocating the same transversely in synchronism With the vibration of the needle.
Another feature of the invention consists in p oviding means for adjusting the upper bender which is adapted to regulate the depth of stitch taken in the superimposed layer thereby adapting the machine for different lrinc; s of Work and different kinds of stitches.
The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment oi my invention applied to a blind stitch sewing machine in WllifilitliU needle and eomplemental stitch forming mechanism are carried by the head of the sewing machine above the Work support, the needle being mounted to oscillate in a plane/inclined to the Worlr supporting plane of the W017i support but it will be understood that the invention is adapted for use with any suitable type of stitch forming mechanism and thatthe present embodiment of the in vention isnierely illustrative and not re strictive. i

' The invention is disclosed herein as applied to a sewing machine of the type illustrated'in my prior applications No. 183,962 and No. 183,963 filed August 1st, 1917 in V which a curved-needleis carried by a needle bar which is mounted to oscillate in a plane inclined to the work supporting surface of the 'worlesupport, said needle bar being mounted upon a link pivoted 1n the upper portion of the sewing machine head and vibrated laterally by a cam driven from the main shaft of the machine.
In that machine the edge of the superimposed. layer is guided across one of the paths 'of oscillation of the needle while the base layer is presented in the other path of oscillation of the needle by a bender in the usual manner, the operation of the bender being so timed in relation to the vibration of the needle as to present the base layer in the path of'the needle only when the latter is oscillated in a plane beyond the edge of the superimposed layer. 7
Inthe presentinvention means are provided for guiding the superimposed layer adjacent to one of the paths of oscillation of the needle and an instrumentality supported and operating upon the same side of the work as the needle utilized to present the superimposed layer intermittently in the said path of oscillation. This is believed to be'broad'ly new and is advantageous over other blind stitch sewing mechanisms for the reason that it enables the line of stitching tobe set at a much greater distance bar-k from the edge, thus adapting the machine for use in piping and for other classes of work for which no blind stitch machine so far as I am aware has heretofore been adapted.
The machine illustrated in the recompa-nying drawing comprises a bed plate 1. a section only of which is shown. an arm .2 rising from said bed plate and having a head 3 by which the oscillating needle and complcmental stitch forming mechanism a rc carried and a work support 4- and hcmh-r 5' which may be and is generally construct-ll and operated in the manner disclosed in my said prior applications.
The stitch .t'erming mechanism comprises a curved needle 6 which is carried by a needle bar 7 mounted upon one end of a rock shaft 8 in a h urine 9 at the lower end of a link 10 which is pivotally mounted upon a shaft 11 in the upper portion of the head of the machine. The shaft 8 is pro \ided at its end opposite the needle bar w th an arm 12 which is rocked through a linl: l) con nected to the end of a lover H- which s pin otally mounted upon a stud l5 and i oscillated through a link 16 onneccd at one end to the center of said arm and at its other end to a stud ecceutricaily n :uniml upon a gear 17 carried upon the end of the main shaft 18 which is mounted in suitable bearings in the arm 2 of the unn-hine in the usual manner.
The needle is vibrated or shoggcd latcrally through a link 19 connected at one e d to the needle bar supporting link l and at its other end engaged by a cam mounted upon a stud 20 carried by a gear meshes with a gear 22 upon the shaft 18.
, The complemental stitch forming rn' hx nism is in the form of a rotary hook ried by a shaft mounted in a hook lli'tlckc. 23 depending from the head of the machine, said hook shaft being driven throw a miter gear 2-1 which meshes with the gen:- 17 upon the end of the main shaft. construction thus described is substantially identical with that described in my prior applications aforesaid but it will be unde stood that any other suitable stitch forming mechanism may be utilized in connertnm with the present invention.
The work supporti which employed in connection with the work presenting mechanism preferably is of a special form haying two surfaces lying in different planes. one

neemss teeth operating through the work supporting surface 25 and a single series of teeth operating through the surface 26 of the work support.
The presser foot, which is secured to the hook bracket in the usual manner, is provided with upper and lower toe portions 27 and 28 provided with work engaging surf faces lying in different planes and adapted to cotiperate respectively with the work engaging surfaces 25 and 26 of the work support. The heel portion of the presser foot has a channel or groove 28 running through it in the line of stitchin which is adapted to guide the upturned edge of the superim posed layer in a substantially vertical p0sition alongside the path of the needle thus enabling the under surface of the superimposed layer to be presented to the needle by an upper bender in such a manner that the needle willpenetrate it at a considerable distance back from the edge of said layer.
An arch shaped guide 29 overlying the space between the major and minor toe portions of the presser foot positioned in proX.- imity to the throat 30 preferably is employed to control the upturned edge of the superimposed layer, said guide being a part of a plate 31 which has an upwardly bent ear 32 connected to the presser foot by a screw 33. In order that the channel through which the superimposed layer is guided to the needle may be adjusted for different thicknesses of material which may be used in the superimposed layer, one wall of said channel is provided with an adjustable section 34 which preferably is a downward extension of a plate 35 which is seated in a guideway in the minor toe portion 28 and is provided with an upwardly turned end 36 by which it may be manipulated by the operator.
The plate 35 is provided with a slot 37 and is clamped to the minor toe portion by a thumb screw 38 extending through the plate 31 and the slot 37 and engaging suitable screwthreads in the minor toe portion.
By reason of the difference in the levels of the work engaging surfaces ofthe work support and the corresponding surfaces of the presser foot, the base layer 39 is bent sharply along the line of stitching in such a manner as to aid infbending up the infolded edge portion of the superimposed layer 40. Furthermore this construction is such that the infolded edge 41 of the superimposed layer by abutting against the wall of the major toe portion is caused to bend abruptly upwardly so as to present a sub stantially vertical surface 42 which is guided in a path adjacent to but not in one of the paths of oscillation of the needle.
In order to present the under surfaceof the superimposed layer which is thus upturned in the path of the needle for the purpose of forming a stitch well back from the edge of said layer a suitable instrumentality is provided which will engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer and force the edgeportion of said layer laterally just enough to enable the proper penetration of the needle into said upturned surface Any suitable means may be employed for this pu rpose. The preferred mechanism which is illustrated 1n the accompanying drawing comprises a bender 43 which is in the form of an arm pivotally mounted upon a stud 44 carried upon the offset lower end 45 of a link 46 which preferably is mounted upon the shaft 11 in the upper portion of the sewing machine head which carries the needle bar supporting link 10.
The bender 43 is yieldably and adjustably connected to the offset portion 45 of the link 46 by a screw 47 having a thumb nut 48, said screw engaging the bender 43 and having its stem passing through it and through a downward extension 49 of the offset portion 45 of the link 46, the stem of said screw which extends beyond said offset portion 49 being surrounded by a helical spring 50 which abuts at one end against said extension and at its other end against a nut 51 on the stem of said screw.
It will be obvious that by rotating the head 48 of the screw the tension upon the sprin 50 may be varied in accordance with the c ass of work operated upon. The bender 43 may be vibrated in synchronism with the lateral vibration or shogging of the needle but in opposite directions thereto by any suitable means. A convenient mechanism which is illustrated herein, and which will at all time preserve the proper timing of the movements of the bender with the shogging of the needle, comprises a link 52 which is pivotally connected to a stud 53 upon the link 46 and at its opposite end embraces a cam 54 upon the shaft 55 of a gear 56 which meshes with the gear 21 which operates the needle shogging link 19.
In the operation of the machine the work is carried by the feed mechanism in the usual manner, the base layer being presented in the path of the needle and in one of its oscillations by the bender 5. The edge of the superimposed layer is guided by the operator between the major and minor toe portions of the presser foot in the usual manner and by reason of the construction above described the upturned edge portion of said layer is bent upwardly to such an extent that its under surface lies in substantially a vertical plane adjacent to but not crossing the path of the needle as it is shogged toward the superimposed layer. Simultaneously with thevibration of the needle toward the superimposed layer the bender 43v is vibrated, through the mechanism above described, toward the needle and engaging the upwardly bent edge portion of the superimposed layer forces the under surface 42 thereof over into the path of the needle so that a suitable stitch is formed therein at a distance well back from its edge.
By. reason of this construction and operation the machine is adapted to sew such seamsas are employed for stitching the lining to- ;the bottom of goods and also for stitching piped lining in garments.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is illustrative and not restrictive and that the present invention embraces any form of instrumentality or bender mechanism which is locatedupon the same side of the work as the needle and which by engaging the surface of the work moves the same into the path of the needle whether the same is employed in machines for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer or for any other operation in which the work is presented to the needle in the manner aforesaid.
Itwill be further understood that my invention may be utilized in connection with stitch forming mechanism in which no lateral vibration or shogging of the needle takes place. 7
It will also be understood that the relation and timing of the bender which engages the base layer may be varied to form different types of stitches within the spirit and scope V of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a V
1. In a blind stltch sewing machine comarisin 'a work su ort a curved oscillatin 1 7 b needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism; work presenting mechanism including an instrumentality located upon the same side of the work support as the needle and means for intermittently actuating the same transversely of the path of the needle to present the work tothe needle.
2. In a blind stitch sewing machine comprising a work support, acurved oscillating needle and complementa-l stitch forming mechanism located above the work support, work presenting mechanlsm includmg means for bending upwardly a portion of the work and guid ng-the same ad acent to the path of the needle and means operating upon the upper surface of the work for intermittently forcing theupwardly bent portion thereof i nto' the path of the needle.
3. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a. base layer'of materialcomprising a work sup port, a needle reciprocable inthe general direction'of the-line o t feed and complcmental stitch forming fmechanisn; work presenting mechanism including means for bending up and guiding the edge of the superimposed layer in a path adjacent to the path of the needle and means for intermittently forcing said superimposed layer across the path of the needle.
4. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of-material comprising a work support, a needle reciprocable in the general direction of the line of feed and complemental stitch forming mechanism; work presenting mechanism including means for bending up the edge of the superimposed layer and guiding the under surface thereof in a path adjacent to the path of the needle and an instrumentality positioned to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer back from the edge thereof and means for actuating the same intermittently to present the superimposed layer in the path of the needle.
5. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a needle reciprocable in the general direction of the line of feed and complemental stitch forming mechanism; work presenting mechanism including means for bending upwardly the edge portion of the superimposed layer away from the plane of the work support and guiding said edge portion in a path adjacent the path of the needle and means for intermittently forcing said bent up edge portion of said superimposed layer across the path of the needle.
6. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located above said work support, work presenting mechanism including means for bending the edge of the superimposed layer upwardly away from the base layer and for guiding said bent-up edge adjacent the path of the needle, an instrumentality piv- ;tally mounted above the work support adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer and means for actuating said instrumentality to force tho upwardly bent portion of said superimposed layer into the path of the needle.
7. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complcmcntal stitch forming mechanism located above said work support; work presenting mechanism including means for bendir the edge of the superimposed layer upwarc guiding said bent-up edge adjacent the path of the needle, 1. yicldable instrumentality mounted above the work support adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer and means for actuating said instrumentality to force the upwardly bent portion of said superimposed layer into the path of the needle.
8. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located above said work support and means for vibrating the needle laterally to form two rows of stitches; work presenting mechanism including means vibrating in synchronism with the vibration of the needle but in opposite directions thereto adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer and present the edge portion thereof in the path of the needle whereby one of said sets of stitches will be formed in the superimposed layer.
9. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located above said work support and means for vibrating the needle laterally to form two rows of stitches; work presenting mechanism including means vibrating in synchronsm with the vibration of the needle but in opposite directions thereto adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer and present the edge portion thereof in the path of the needle whereby one of said sets of stitches will be formed in the superimposed layer and means for thrusting the base layer into the path of the needle upon alternate stitches whereby the other set of stitches will be formed in the base layer.
10. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a needle reciprocable in the general di rection of the line of feed and complemental stitch forming mechanism; work presenting mechanism including means for intermittently presenting the base layer inthe path of the needle and means independent thereof for intermittently presenting the edge portion of the superimposed layer in the path of the needle.
11. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support and curved oscillating needle, and complemental stitch forming mechanism located above the work support; work presenting mechanism including a lower bender and means for causing the same intermittently to engage the under surface of the base layer and raise said layer into the path of the needle, an upper bender andmeans for causing the same intermittently to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer and to present the edge portion of said layer into the path of the needle.
12. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support and curved oscillating needle, and complemental. stitch forming mechanism located above the work support; work presenting mechanism including a lower bender and means for causing the same intermittently to engage the under surface of the base layer and raise said layer into the path of the needle,'an upper bender and means for actuating the same to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer in alternate timing with the operation of the lower bender and to present the edge portion of said superimposed layer in the path of the needle whereby one set of stitches will be formed in the base layer alone and an alternating set of stitches formed in the superimposed layer.
13. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located above the work support; work presenting mechanism including a presser foot having major and minor toe portions provided with work engaging faces lying in different planes adapted to engage respectively the superimposed layer and the base layer, guiding means intermediate of said major and minor toe portions cooperating therewith to bend upwardly the edge portion of the superimposed layer and direct the under surface thereof in a path adjacent to the edge of the needle and means for intermittently thrusting respectively the base layer and the edge of the superimposed layer into the path of the needle.
14. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a base plate,
a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located and operating above said bed plate; a work support having work supporting faces lying 1n different planes, a presser foot having major and minor toe portions provided with work engaging faces lying in different planes adapted to engage respectively the superimposed and base layers acting in cooperation with the faces of the work support to bend the base and superimposed layers abruptly adjacent the line of stitching, and guiding means for the superimposed layer located intermediate of the major and minor toe portions of said presser foot adapted to direct the under surface of the edge portion of the superimposed layer in a path adjacent to the edge of the needle and means for intermittently thrusting the base and superim posed layers respectively into the path of the needle.
15. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a base plate, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located and operating above said bed plate; a work support having work supporting faces lying in different planes, :1 .presser foot having major and minor toe portions provided with work engaging faces lying in different planes adapted to engage respectively the superimposed and base layers acting in cooperation with the faces of the work support to bend the base and superimposed layers abruptly adjacent the line of stitching, a channel intermediate of said toe portions adapted in cocperation with the work engaging surface of the presser foot and work support to direct the under surface of the superimposed layer in a path adjacent the path of the needle and means for intermittently thrusting the base and superimposed layer respectively into the path of the needle.
16. In a blind {stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a base plate, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located and operating above said bed plate; a work support having work supporting faces lying in different planes, a presser foot having major and minor toe portions provided with work engaging faces lying in different planes adapted to engage respectively the superimposed and base layers acting in cooperation with the faces of the work support to bend the base and superimposed layers abruptly adjacent the line of stitching, a channel in termediate of said toe portions adapted in cooperation with the work engaging surface of the presser foot and work support to direct the under surface of the superimposed layer in a path adjacent to the path of the needle, means for adjusting the width of the channel for goods of difierent character or thickness and means for intermittently thrusting the base and superimposed layers respectively into the path of the needle.

A blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle, a support for said needle pivotally mounted in the upper portion of the head of the machine to permit lateral vibration of said needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism positioned to cooperate with said needle, work presentingmechanism including a bender adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer pivotally supported upon the same axis as that of the needle supporting member, means for vibrating the needle and bender in synchronism but in opposite directions, and means for presenting the base'layer in the path of the needle whereby one set of stitches will be formed in the base layer alone and another set of stitches will be formed in the superimposed layer. r
18. A blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle, a support for said needle pivotally mounted in the upper portion of the head of the machine to permit lateral vibration of said needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism positioned to cooperate with said needle, work present ing mechanism including a bender adapted to engage the upper surface of the supcrini posed layer pivotally supported upon the same axis as that of the needle supporting member, means for vibrating the needle and bender in synchronism but in opposite dircc tions including cams operated by intermeshing gears and connected respectively to the needle supporting member and to the bende supporting member.
19. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material, comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located and operating above the work support, work presenting mechanism comprising means for bending upwardly the edge of the supcrimposed layer and guiding the same in a path adjacent to th path of reciprocation of the needle, a bender supporting member pivotally mounted in the head of the machine, a bender pivotally mounted upon said bender supporting member adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer, means for yieldably sustaining the bender in operative position and means for reciprocating said bender transversely of the line of stitching to force the edge of the superimposed layer across the path of the needle.
20. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material, comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located and operating above the work support, work presenting mechanism comprising means for bending upwardly the edge of the superimposed layer and guiding the same in a path adjacent to the path of reciprocation of the needle, a bender supporting member pivotally mounted in the head of the machine, a bender pivotall mounted upon said bender supporting member adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer, adjustable yielding means connecting said bender to said bender supporting member whereby the bender is permitted to yield upon encountering an obstruction and means for reciprocating said bender transversely of the line of stitching to force the edge of the superimposed layer across the path of the needle.
21. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material, comprising a work support, a curved oscillating needle and complemental stitch forming mechanism located and operating above the work support, work presenting mechanism comprising means for bending upwardly the edge of the superimposed layer and guiding the same in a path adjacent to the path of reciprocation of the needle, a bender supporting member pivotally mounted in the head of the machine, a bender pivotally mounted upon said bender supporting member adapted to engage the upper surface of the superimposed layer, a bolt extending through said bender and bender supporting member, a helical spring surrounding said bolt and a nut on the end of said bolt engaging said spring whereby the tension of the spring will be adjusted and means for reciprocating said bender transversely of the line of stitching to force the edge of the superimposed layer across the path of the needle.
22. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a needle reciprocable in the general direction of the line of feed and complemental stitch forming mechanism, an upper bender positioned above thework, a lower bender positioned beneath the work and means for intermittently actuating said upper and lower benders to cause them to present respectively the superimposed and the base layer in the path of the needle.
23. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a needle reciprocable in the general direction of feed, an upper bender positioned above the work, a lower bender positioned beneath the work and means for actuating said benders alternately to cause them to present respectively the superimposed and the base layers in the path of the needle.
24. In a blind stitch sewing machine for felling a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a work support, a needle reciprocable in the general direction of the line of feed, an upper bender positioned above the work to engage the superimposed layer and means for moving said upper bender transversely of the line of feed to position the edge of the superimposed layer in the path of said needle, a lower bender positioned beneath the base layer and means for reciprocating the same vertically to present the base layer intermittently in the path of the needle.
25. In a blind stitch sewing machine for sewing a superimposed layer upon a base layer of material comprising a needle recip rocable in the general direction of the line of feed, guiding means for turning up the edge of the superimposed layer, an upper bender positioned above the work to engage the superimposed layer and means for moving said upper bender transversely of the line of feed to present the turned up edge of the superimposed layer in the path of the needle and means for adjusting said guiding means;
