GEORGE W. GOSS AND CHARLES E. GOSS, OF BALTIMORE, OHIO.
GATE-ADJUSTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE W. Gross andCi-iantns E. Gross, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, inthe county of Fairfield', State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Gate-Adjuster, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a gate, and the present application embodies a'continuation' of our co-pending application for Letters Patent on a gate, Serial No. 273,407, filed Jan. 27, 1919.
The invention aims to provide novel means for holding a gate adjustably and releasably at different heights.
It is within the province of the dis closure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a gate constructed in accordance with the invention, parts appearing in section; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of theadjuster, parts being in section; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan of the adjuster.
The numeral 1 denotes a gate which may be construrted in various ways without jeopardizing the utility of the invention. Preferably, however. the gate includes longitudinal rails 2 and cross bars 3, 4, 5 and 6 united with the longitudinal rails. Di agonal braces 7 extend upwardly from the cross bars 4 and 6, the upper ends of the braces being received between the cross bars 5 and being attached thereto by a securing device 8.
The numeral 9 denotes an inner support carrying an upper hook 10 and a lower hook 11. The lower hook 11 engages a hanger 12 mounted on the gate 1. An upper Specificationof Letters Patent.
This application filed. May 28,
If the retainer 24 is d sposed tangent to a circle, the center of which is the point of engagement between the lower hanger 12 and the lower book 11, then the arms 21 and 20 of the head 18 will slide freely along the retainer 24, the free end of the gate moving downwardly. Ordinarily. however, the retainer 24 does not stand in the position above mentioned, because the weight of the retainer 24 causes it to swing downwardly with the securing device 8 as a center.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921. l
. on the ate is released, then the retainer is clamped in the slot 22, in any position which it may have assumed. The vertical position of the gate may be adjusted at any time by raising the free end of the retainer 24, so that the retainer can slide through the slot 22. The hand of an operator may be placed between certain of the rails 2 of the gate, and engage the diagonal down- Wardly extended portion of the flexible element 29, the retainer being operated in this Way; Or, if desired, a pull may be exerted on the flexible element by swinging the handle 31 forwardly on its pivotal mounting 32. The numeral 33 denotes a striking post and the gate is held thereto by a latch 37 of any desired sort.
lVe claim- In a device of the class described, a support; a gate; a retainer provided at one end with a depending arm pivotally mounted on the gate; a U-shaped head including arms having slots, the retainer being clamped in one slot and being movable loosely in the other slot; a hanger whereon the head is mounted; and means for mounting the hanger pivotally on the support.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. H. EMswILnR, F. A. RICKLEY.
