Description

w. A. LAPINSKI. CUFF BUTTON. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-14. 1920.
1,367,154. Patented Feb..1,1921.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED w T OFFICE- y .warirnnatnnnrilnrmsxr, or WAUSAU, Wisconsin.
To all whom-it mag concern: a
Be it known that I, WALTER ALAPI SKI,
a citizen of the United btates,"residing at ,Wausau, in the county or Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Juli-linttons, of which the following isa specifica- This invention relates to jewelry and more particularly to cull buttons of the separable type.
The object of the invention is to provide a button of this class the two members of which are separably connected by a clutch. Anotherobject is to provide a button of this character, the parts of which may be quickly connected and cannot be disconnected unless manually released, thereby avoiding all danger of the parts being lost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certainnovel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment oi the invention. p
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cuff button constructed in accordance with this invention with the parts shown in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of F ig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the clutch.
In the embodiment illustrated the button constituting this invention is composed of two mating members 1 and 10 separably shown oblong and has extending at right angles from one face thereof longitudinally spaced plates 3 and4 of a width slightly less than the width of the plate 2. Pro ecting laterally outward at right angles from the plates 3 and 4 and parallel with plate 2 are two arms 5 and 6 against which are designed to abut when the members are assembled similarly shaped arms 21 and 22 carried by the member 10 as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Arranged between plates 3 and 4. and projecting at right angles from plate 2 1S s p ecificationof Letters Patent. Pat ted-Fb; 1, App1icationfi1edScptcnibcrH, 1920. serialnof iiouii.
a post 7 designed to be iiiterlocliihgly en:
. extending arms 21 and 22 which abutthe arms 5 and 6 of member 1 as above described. The outer end of the housing 17 is made solid and has formed on its inner face an outwardly flaredseat 19 for a purpose presently to be described.
A tubular member 12 extends through the plate 11 and has a cone shaped head 13 carried by its inner end and which is designed to fit in the seat 19 of the solid portion 18 of the housing 17 as is shown clearly in Fig. 3. This head 13 is provided near its apex with a ball race 14 which communicates with a bore 12 extending longitudinally through the head and communicating with the interior of tube 12. Mounted in this ball race 14 are a plurality of clutch balls 15 which when the head 13 is forced is provided with a finger grip here shown in the form of a ball 16, but which obviously may be of any other desired confi uration, it being designed as an ornament lor the cuff button as well as means for releasing the clutch. V
Arranged around the tube 12 is a coiled spring 20 which bears at one end against the inner face of the plate 11 and at its other end against the head 13 and operates to normally force said head 13 into the seat 19 and cause the balls 15 to grippingly connect the members 1 and 10.
From the above description it will be obvious that when the parts are connected as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 that they cannot accidentally become separated and can only be released by a pull on the finger grip 16 which moves the head 13 away from seat 19 and disengages the post 7 permitting the members 1 and 10 to be readily separated.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed'in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be un derstood that any modifications within the scope of the claims may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, I 7
What is claimed is:' 1. A button of the class described comprising two mating members, one of which is in the form of a plate with spaced plates projecting-at right angles from" one face thereof and providedwith outturned terminal arms and having a post arranged between said plates, the other member having av-springjprojectedball clutch member for engaging said post to lock it engaged with Q the first'mentioned member.
. 2, A button of the class described eomprising two mating members, one of which is in the form Of a plate with'spaced plates projecting at right angles from one face V to fit between the plates of the first mentioned member, said housing havinglaterally extending arms to abut the terminal arms of the first mentioned member, and a spring projected cone clutch member arranged within said housing to engage said post and lock the members in operative position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signa ture hereto.
WALTER ALBERT LAPINSKI.
