PICKlTlIt-EETICH CHECK AND STOP.
.1 0 all 10 from it may concern l'ie it lmown that I, Brennan flnn'nnmnir 'llonnnn, a citizen of the United States, re siding at ll orcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have inrented a new and useful Picker-Stick Check and Stop, of which the following is spec1- fication.
This invention relates to a pichcrsticlr checlr and stop, by which the position of shuttle in its shuttle box may be automatleally controlled and adjusted. 1n weft replenishing looms, in which weft carriers are inserted from time to time in the running shuttle it is very important that the shuttle shall he boxed in a substantially uniform position to insure correct transfer of the weft :arrier. A. certain amount of wear occurs in the picker the loom is operated, and for this and other reasons the shuttle frequently enters farther and farther into the shuttle box, eventually interfering with suc cessful transfer of the weft carrier.
it is the general object of my invention to provide mechanism by which the position of the boxed shuttle shall be maintained subst'antially constant, adjustments being automatically applied to correct for wear of the picker and for other similar changes in conditions.
Another object of my invention relates to the provision of a picker stick check of improved design, in combination with. the adjustable stop above mentioned.
lily invention further relates to arrange ments and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A. preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention;
2is asimilar view of certain parts in a different position; i
Fig. 8 is an enlarged plan view of the takeup mechanism;
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation thereof, taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an enl elevation, partly in section, taken along the line 5-5 in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken along the line G--6 in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, 1 have shown a lay 10 having a shuttle boa plate 11, and
hinder 12, and I have also shown the usual.

Application filed April 12, 192( Serial No. 373,067.
comprising an arm 17 pivotally mounted on a stud 18 supported by a projection 19, ex
tending from the lay end plate 20, secured to the lay 10, and forming a part of the shuttle race thereof.
A spring 21 is coiled around the stud 18 (Fig. 6) and is connected at one end thereto, and at the opposite end to the hub of the arm 1?". This spring acts to swing the arm 17 yieldingly to the position indicated in ,dotted lines in 1. A stop 22 on the projection 19 limits the movement of the arm in the opposite direction.
The strap 16 is conveniently provided with a loop 23: extending around the stud 18 and engaging the surface of the spring 21. The end of the loop encircles a cylindrical connecting portion 2 1 of the arm 17.
Assuming that the rear end of the strap 16 is fixed, engagement of the strap by the picker sticlr as the shuttle is boxed will swing the arm 17 from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in full lines in said figure; Such movement of the arm against the tension of the spring 21 provides a yielding checking resistance to the picker stick 15, which is positively stopped when the parts reach the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. As the tension arm 17 is swung about its pivot, there is a slight frictional movement of theloop 23 about the portion 2 1- of the arm 17, which movement slightly increases the checking action of the tension spring 21.
In the preferred form of my invention, the rear end ofthe strap 16 is secured to a drum loosely mounted on the lower end of a stud 26. The stud 26 extends through an opening in a plate 27, and also through a slot 28 in. a flange 29 projecting rearwardly from the shuttle box plate 11. The adjacent faces of the plate 27 and the flange 29 are serrated, as shown in Fig. 4, and the slot 28 permits longitudinal adjustment of the plate relative to the flange, the parts being secured together by a clamping nut 30.
A. ratchet wheel 31 is secured to or formed integ "ml with the drum 25 and rotates there with upon the stud 26. A. feed pawl 32 is pivotally mounted upon the rearwardly pro jecting arm of a lever 33 which in turn is pivoted upon the stud 26. The lever 33 has a forwardly projecting portion 34 which extends through a slot 35 in the box plate 11, and is provided with an end portion 36 positioned for engagement by the tapered nose of the sliuttle, should the shuttle be boxed too deeply.
A spring 37 is disposed in sockets formed on the lever 33 and on the plate 27, and yieldingly forces the lever 33 against an adjustable stop screw 38.
-A holding pawl 39 is pivoted at 40 to the plate 27, and prevents rearward movement of the ratchet wheel 31. Suitable springs are provided for holding the pawls 32 and 39 against the ratchet wheel 31.
The operation of the take-up mechanism is as follows: When all parts areproperly adjusted, the shuttle will be boxed in a position in which it barely touches the end portion 36 of the lever 33, the picker and picker stick being firmly seated against the strap 16. If the picker becomes worn or the strap stretches, so that the shuttle enters too far into the shuttle'box, the nose of the shuttle will engage the portion 36 in the lever 33 and will swing the feed pawl 32 to the left (as viewed in Fig. 3) at the same time compressing the spring 37.
As soon as the shuttle is picked, the spring 37 will move the feed pawl 32 to the right, thus advancing the ratchet wheel 31 and shortening the strap 16. Rearward movement of the ratchet wheel is thereafter prevented by the holding pawl 39. The strap 16 is thus adjusted and will act to stop the shuttle before it enters too far into the shuttle box. As soon, however, as wear of the parts and other conditions permits the shuttle to again enter too far into the shuttle box, the take-up mechanism will again operate and thestrap 16 will be again shortened.
In this way the shuttle is automatically maintained in a substantially fixed boxed position. a result which is of great importance in weft replenishing looms. The exact position at which the shuttle is stopped may be controlled by adjusting the plate 27 longitudinallv along the flange 29.
Having thus described my invention. it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art: within the spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is 1. In a loom having a shuttle and ashuttle box, a picker stick stop comprising :1
3. In a loom having a shuttle and a shu le box, a picker stick stop having, in combination, a stick engaging member. a shuttle engaging member, and connections between said members, effective to cause adjustment of said stick engaging member to stop the shuttle in a predetermined position in said box.
In a loom having a shuttle and a shuttle box, a picker stick stop having, in combinzr tion, a stick engaging member, and means to automatically adjust said member, said means being controlled by the position of the boxed shuttle.
5. In a loom having a shuttle and a shuttle box, a picker stick stop having, in combinm tion, a stick engaging member, and means to automatically adjust said member, said means comprising a take-up mechanism, and an operating arm therefor positioned for engagement and actuation by a shuttle too deeply boxed.
6. In a loom having a shuttle and a shuttle box, a picker stick stop having, in combination, a stick engaging strap, a drum to vhich one end of said strap is connected, a ratchet wheel on said drum, a feed pawl for said wheel, av holding pawl, and a actuating arm for said feed pawl positioned for engagement by a shuttle too deeply boxed.
7. In a loom having a shuttle and a shuttle box, a combined picker stick check and stop comprising a stick engaging member. :1 checking device to which one end of sa d member is connected, a take-up mechanism to which the other end of said member is connected, and setting means for said mechanism actuated by a shuttle too deeply boxed.
8. In a loom having a shuttle and a shuttle box, a combined picker stick check and stop comprising a strap held in the path of said stick, a spring pressed swinging arm to which one end of said strap is connected, :1 take-up drum to which the other end of said strap is secured, and setting means for said drum actuated by a shuttle too deeply boxed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature,
RECHARD GREENLEAF TURNER.
