Application iiled August 12, 1920. Serial No. 402,030.
To all whom it may concern L' Be it known tint I, LEONARD l)AI-1LGRE N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigarette cases and pertains more particularly to a case for holding a complete package-of cigarettes, i. 6., the original package with the cigarettes therein.
As is well known some cigarettes are sold in packages of 20 the packages being made of paper, and accordingly the present invention aims to provide a case which has a holder to receive the entire package with the cigarettes therein.
The invention further aims to provide a case which is of simple and economical con struction, which has a minimum of moving parts, and wherein the opening of the two parts of the cover is limited at a number oi different points.
Still further the invention aims to provide a case wherein the opening of the parts of the cover causes an automatic and central alinement of the package holder between the cover parts, so that the cigarettes can be easily removed, or a fresh package inserted upon removal of the empty package.
' In the drawings:
Figure l is the side elevation of the invention showino' the cover parts open and the holder automatically alined at points equidistant from each of the cover parts;
Fig. 2 1s a top plan view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3. oi Fig. 1;,
Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view of the case in closed position; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. i
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a cover is employed composed of two substantially similar parts 1 and which are hingedly connected by a series of knuckles 3 and a pintle 4:. AS depicted in Fig. 4 the end knuckles of the respective cover parts are cut away at 5 so as to form shoulders, which, upon opening of the cover parts engage each. other and thus restrict the extent of opening of such parts one in rela tion to the other. The holder for the package of cigarettes is preferably an integral structure of approximately U-shape in side elevation, as depicted in Fig. 3, and has a bottom (3 and ends v7, the bottom being formed with a slot from the sides of which depend integral knuckles 8, which latter are disposed between the knuckles 3 of the cover parts and receive the pintle si therein. In this manner the same pintle serves to mount the holder and each of the cover parts. The knuckles 8 are formed by depressing the bottone at points adjacent the sides of the slot,
9. The bottoms 10 of the cover are bent inwardly and upwardly at their ends to form lugs 11, which latter project within the slot 9 and engage the opposite side walls formed by the slot.
From the foregoing it will be apparent.
that upon opening 01 the cover parts, the lugs 11 willengage the opposite side walls of the slot 9 and thus will centrally and automatically aline the holder with relation to the two cover parts, and will also hold the holder substantially stationary, and fully so if slight pressure is exerted by the fingers outwardly against each of the cover parts. In this way the cover parts are restricted against outward movement, which restriction is simultaneously augmented by the shoulders 5 of the knuckles being engaged at the same time as thelugs 11 engage the side walls of the slot'9. Thus the cover par-ts are restricted against outward movement at eight different points, four foreach cover part. i i
It will further be seen from the foregoing that the entire device comprises butfour parts, namely two cover parts, the holder and the pin, all the remaining parts being :lt'ormed integral with the cover parts and the holder, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.- In a cigarette case, a pair of cover parts havin knuckles ad'acent knuckles bein shouldered to engage with each other and restrict relative outward movement oithe cover parts, a holder slotted in its bottom and having knuckles disposed between certain knuckles of the cover parts, the bottom of the cover parts at the inner sides thereof being bent upwardly to form lugs which project within the slot of the bottom or" the holder and engage opposite side wa-lls oii the 2. In a cigarette case, a pair of cover parts 5 having knuckles, adjacent knuckles being shouldered to engage with each other and restrict relative outward movement of the cover parts, a holcler s lotted in its bottom and having knuckles disposed between cer- 10 tain knuckles of the cover parts, means earried by the cover parts to engage opposite side walls of the slot to aline the holder and to also restrict outward movement of the coverparts, and a pintle pass throughall of the knuckles. V i 15 In testimony whereof. I have signed my name tothis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. is
