Another object is to provide simple and efficient means for adjusting the heading tool lon itudinally relative to its holder and slide.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel detailsof construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fullydescribed and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine for heading hot metal and for forging, and showing the heading tool holder on the heading slide.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the heading slide and tool holder.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the heading slide and the heading tool holder.
Fig, i is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a portion of the frame of the machine and 2 is the guideway in which the heading slide 3 is adapted to work. A bolster plate 1 having a central boss 5 and an opening extending through the plate and boss as at 6, is mounted on the front end of the slide and has openings 7 through which extend bolts 8 used for clamping the plate to the slide. ings T are sufficiently large to allow the plate to shift either vertically or horizontally relative to the bolts 8 when the nuts 9 on said bolts are loosened. Lugs 10 are extended forwardly from the heading slide and overhang the bolster plate. Screws 11 extend upwardly from the plate and throu gh relatively large openings 12 in the lugs 10, and by means of nuts 13 on the screws 11, the plate can be elevated to secure the necessary vertical adjustment.
Extending forwardly from the sides of the slide 3 are lugs 14 in which are mounted screws 15 whereby the bolster plate 4 can be adjusted laterally, these screws engaging the sides of the plate as shown.
The heading tool has been shown at 16 and is extended through the plate 1, said tool being seated in the opening 6. A set screw 17 holds the tool in position within the plate 4. The rear end of the tool bears against a wedge 18 arranged vertically in a groove 19 in the front end of the slide 3 and a lug 20 extends from the upper end of the wedge and carries a screw 21 which bears against the top of the slide 3.
It will be apparent that by means of the bolts 11 and screws 15 the bolster plate 4 can be adjusted vertically and laterally relative to the slide 3 after which it can be securely fastened by means of the nuts 9 and bolts 8. Longitudinal adjustment of the heading tool 16 can be effected accurately and readily by means of the wedge 18 and screw 21.
WVhat is claimed is 2-- 1. In a machine of the class described the combination with a heading slide having a groove in one face, of a bolster plate extending across the grooved face of the slide and having apertures therethrough, binding means extending loosely through the apertures to permit vertical and lateral movement of the plate relative to said means, means for adjusting the plate laterally and vertically relative to the binding means and slide, a heading tool extending through and movable with the plate, and a wedge adjustably mounted in the groove and engaged by and forming a thrust bearing for the heading tool.
2. In a machine of the class described the combination with a heading slide having a groove in one face, said groove having an inclined Wall, of a bolster plate extending across the groove and having openings therein, clampin devices-extending loosely through the openings and engaging the slide, said plate being movable radially in any direction relative to the binding means,
