Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 6, 1919. Serial No. 342,950.
To aZZ whom it may canoe m:
Be it known that 1, Oscar W. SoHLAo, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined drain and trap for sewer pipes and the principal object of the invention is to provide a gas trap to prevent the escape of gas from the sewer and also to prevent foreign substances from passing into the sewer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a float valve for preventing back pressure of the water within the sewer flowing outwardly through the drain with a removable cage for holding the ball in place.
The present invention is an improvement upon the device shown in Patent No. 1,218,6t82, granted to me on March 6, 1917.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the com-" bination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. I11 describing my invention in detail, ref
erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinally sectional view of the improved device. I
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with parts broken away.
Fig. 3 is a detail view.
In these views 1 indicates the bowl of the device which is provided with a tubular projection 2 in its center through which the waterupasses to the sewer. The top of the bowl is closed by the usual perforated plate a and a bell lis connected with-said plate and incloses the upper end of the tubular projection 2. The edges of the bell project beyond the upper end of said projection so thatwhen the bowl is filled with watera trap will be formed to prevent the escape of gases from the sewer.
of the sockets.
I also provide means for preventing the water from passing from the sewer back into the drain, as set forth in the above mentioned patent. Such means consist of a cage 5 connected with the bottom of the bowl and inclosing the ball valve and its seat 7. a
In the present case the cage is formed of a pair of U-shaped members 8 having their ends provided with hooks 9 and these hooks engage sockets 10 formed 011 the lower part of the bowl. Thus by rocking the U-shaped members the hooks may be withdrawn from the sockets so as to remove the cage from the bowl. The cross-pieces of the U-shaped members are provided with interlocking notches 11 for holding the lower ends of the members together.
The valve seat 7 is preferably formed of rubber and it is held in place b'y having its flange 7 pressed under the projecting parts As will be seenthis valve seat is placed around the lower end of the tubular projection.
It will thus be seenthat the gases within the sewer are prevented from escaping by air trap formed by the bell and the tubular projection. It will also be seen that the escape of water from the sewer is prevented by the float valve and this valve and its seat may be easily removed by detaching the cage.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
Idesire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a bow]. having a centrally arranged opening therein, a plurality of socket members formed on the bottom of the bowl around said opening, a cage formed of a pair of U-shaped members having hooked ends engaging the socket members, a valve seat at the lower part of the opening and a ball valve within the cage and adapted to engage the seat.
Patented Jan. 18, 1921.
2. A device of the class described comat the lower part of the opening, a ball valve prising a bowl having a centrally arranged Within the cage and adapted to engage the opening therein, a plurality of socket memseat, said seat being formed of flexible ma- 10 bers formed on the bottom of the bowl terial and having parts projecting under the '5 around said opening, a cage formed of a pair socket members.
of U-shaped members having hooked ends In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. engaging the socket members, a valve seat OSCAR W. SCHLAG.
