To all whom it may concern j Be it known that l, BERNARD It. Prnirnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jessie, in the county of G riggs and State of North Dakota, have invcntednew and useful Improvements in Gas Generating Retort Construction, of which the. following is a specification.

The primary object of this invention is the production of gas, creosote, tar and other products from straw and other vegatation in a simple and inexpensive manner, andby which the material from which the gas and other products are produced. can be handled expeditiously and economically.

The accompanying drewing forming part of this specification, is a vertical longitudh nal section of a device'by which my improvement can. be carried into use.

In the drawing a furnace is shown having a front 2, a back 3, e grate. at and an up wardly and backwardly slanting wall Placed above the grate is a retort having, a floor 3, a back 8 and a top wall 12, the front of said retort being provided with a door 11, closing an entrance through which straw or other material to be treated can be passed into the retort chamber. lhe top or" the retort chamber has a gas duct 14 for the egress of generated from the straw and other material which is treated. in the retort. The retort chamber is provided with a plurality of flues 13, the front ends of which are connected with a smoke chimney 15. The creosote, tar and remaining products can from time to time be removed from the retort through the re, tort doorway by removing the door 11. By the use 0 my invention the straw-andi' other products placed in the retort can efliciently and quickly reduced to gas, creosets and other constituents by inexperienced operators and the gas and residue collected.

ln accordance with the patent statutes, I have. described the principlesof operotior of my invention, together with the app! ratus which I consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood the construction shown is onlv illustrative and that the inve ltlOIl can lie carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth, within the scope of the "following claims.

Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In. an apparatus for producing gas and other products from Vegetable material, comprising in combination, a furnace housing forming a combustion chamber, a retort within said housing and extending for a distance of its length above said combustion chamber, said retort having a vent duct-k8 "forming anoutlet therefrom. a plurality of horizontal fines traversing the upper portion only or said retort and opening into the housing for communication with said combustion chamber, the retort being provided with an opening at one end below the lines for access to permit material to be freely introduced and removed from said retort, and a smoke outlet duct connected with said fines remote from their communication with the housing and cxteriorly of the latter.
