To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Sir ARTHUR TRnvoR DAWSON, knight, and Sir GEORGE THOMAS BUOKHAM, knight, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Vickers House, Broadway Westminster, in the county of London, ngland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Ordnance, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ordnance having sighting apparatus provided with horizontal deflection gear serving to move the sight laterally in relation to the axis of the gun. In such ordnance as at present constructed the adjustment of the horizontal deflection gear moves the sight ofl' the target and the gun has then to be trained or traversed by the trainin member of the guns crew to return the s1ght on to the target. When the deflection adjustment of the sight has to be constantly altered, as is so in some cases with anti-aircraft or other guns mounted on ships where the effect of the rolling of the ship is taken into account by varying the amount of deflection given to the sight the training member of the crew has to be constantly operating the training mechanism to return the sight on to the target with the result that his work is rendered arduous and accurate shooting made difiicult.
According to the present invention we provide means whereby, when the horizontal deflection gear of the sight is Operated, the gun together with the sight and the sight relatively to the gun are simultaneously 'l moved laterally in reverse directions and by a corresponding amount so that the deflection adjustment does not move the sight off the target. For this purpose the handwheel or other operating device of the horizontal deflection gear may be connected to part of the training mechanism through a differential gearing which is also operated by the handwheel or other operating device of the training mechanism so that the training pinion or its equivalent is under the dual control of the horizontal deflection member of the crew and the training member of the crew.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into eiect,`we will describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a gunV mounting provided with a form of our invention, and y Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a side elevation and a plan showing on an enlarged scale the apparatus illustrated by Fig. l removed from the mounting.
'A is the sight carrier and A is the horizontal deflection arm operated through suitable gearing (including a shaft A2) by the deflection hand-Wheel A3. B is the training crank handlever and B is a shaft operated thereby, C is a second shaft operated by the hand-wheel A3. The two shafts B and C operate through differential gearing contained in a casing I) upon a shaft E which carries the training pinion E or other member of the training mechanism. The differential gearing is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the horizontal deflection handwheel A3 is operated the gun together with the sight and the sight relatively to the gun are moved laterally in reverse directions and by corresponding amounts with the result that, although the horizontal angle between the sight line and the axis of the gun has been altered to the required extent, the sight line has not been displaced and the sight has therefore not been moved off the target. In this manner the training member is not troubled with any alterations made in the deflection angle `and his sole duty therefore consists in training the gun to keep the sight on the target in accordance with the movements of the target and the movements of his Own ship.
Although the invention is described in its application to guns mounted on ships it is to be understood that it can also be employed in connection with other guns if so v desired.
