RAILROAD-TIE.
Application filed June 16,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VILMER H. Ynniins, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsbur h, inthe county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Railroad- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal railroad ties, and the primary object thereof is to provide a tie of the character described, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, embodying novel means for joining the rails together, and further providing for supporting and securing the rails thereto without the use of tie plates, bolts, nuts, or spikes.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a tie of the type set forth, which'is simple in its construction and arrangement,- strong, durable and efiicient in its use, readily installed, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line II-II,

The concave or lower face of the base 2 is formed with a plurality of depending flanges 4', which when the tie is embedded in the Specification of Letters Patent.

road-bed, prevent the displacement of the tie longitudinally. The curvature of the base 2 in conjunction with the longitudinal rib 3 prevents the lateral displacement of the tie when positioned.
Positioned on the upper edge of the rib 3 and formed integrally therewith adjacent each end thereof, is a substantially channelshaped rail chair which extends rectangularly with respect to the length of the body portion of the tie. The rail chair comprises the base plate 4 and the vertically extending side arms 5. The rail chair is further supported on the rib 3 by angularly disposed reinforcing ribs 6 which are formed integrally with the lower face of the base plate 4 and the sides of the vertical rib 3. The upper portion of each of the side arms 5, of the rail chair, is formed to provide a longitudinally extending rounded groove 7 on the inner face thereof for the purpose hereinafter referred to.
The rail 8 is seated in the rail chair, the flange 9 thereof being of the same width as the base plate 4 and resting on the latter. An angular supporting and securing bar 10 1s positioned on each side of the rail 8 between the respective side arms 5, of the rail chair, and the rail 8. The inner face of the vertical leg 11, of the bar 10, is formed with a pair of longitudinal ribs 12 and 13, respectively, which abut against the web 14, of the rail 8. The upper edge of the vertical leg 11 abuts against the under side of the rail head 15; the lower face of the horizontal leg 16 seats on top of the flange 9, and the outer edge of the leg 16 abuts against the inner face of respective side arms 5. Gentrally disposed on the outer face of the leg 10, near the top thereof, is a projecting lug 17, for the purpose hereinafter fully explained.
A locker member 18 is positioned on each of the securing bars 10 having a vertical leg 19 provided with the teeth 20 on its upper edge. The horizontal leg 21, of the member 18, is formed with an enlarged rounded outer edge 22, which engages in the longitudinal rounded groove 7, of respective side arms 5 of the rail chair, provided therefor.
Each of the bars 10, with its respective locker member 18, is locked in position for securing the rail 8 in the rail chair by means of a key 28 having a depending projection 24, at one end thereof, and a beveled upper edge 25. The key 2-3 is driven between the lug 17 and the locker member 18. The projection 24 engages the teeth 20 to prevent longitudinal movement of the key 23 when in the secured position, and the beveled up per edge Ql engages the angularly disposed lower face 26 of the lug 17 to prevent lateral movement of the key 23.
My improved tie, being constructed from metal, will ordinarily last a lifetime, thereby providing for the economical upkeep for the railroad. The rail securing elements em bodied in the invention also provide for making the rail joints, permitting contraction and expansion, besides reinforcing and supporting the rails by their novel attachment thereto, as herein described.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A rail tie comprising a body portion provided with a base, a pair of rail chairs formed integral therewith, a pair of rail securing bars mounted in each of the chairs and each provided with a lateral lug, locker members seated on the bars and extending below the lugs, said members provided with teeth, and keys interposed between said mem bers and lugs and engaging in said teeth.
2. A rail tie comprising a body portion, rail chairs formed integral therewith, oppositely disposed rail securing bars mounted on each chair and each provided with a lug, oppositely disposed locker members seated on the bars and engaging in the chairs, said members being toothed and keys abutting against the lugs and engaging in the teeth of said members.
3. A rail tie comprising a body portion, rail chairs formed integral therewith and having grooved side arms, oppositely disposed rail securing bars mounted on each chair and each provided with a lug, oppositely disposed locker members seated on the grooved side arms of said chairs, said members being toothed, and keys abutting against the lugs and engaging in the teeth of said members.
4. A rail tie comprising'a body portion, rail chairs formed integral therewith, oppositely disposed rail securing bars mounted on each chair and each provided with a lug, oppositely disposed locker members seated on the bars and engaging in the chairs, the top edge of said members being toothed, and keys abutting against the lugs and engaging in the teeth of said members.
5. A rail tie comprising a body portion, rail chairs formed integral therewith and having side arms formed with grooves, angle-shaped securing bars mounted in each chair and each formed with a lug, locker members seated on the bars and having the outer edges thereof seated in said grooves, said members provided with teeth, and keys abutting against said lugs and formed with a projection engaging in said teeth.
