K y Specification of Letters Patent. i. i Patented Jn. 4:, 1921" Application filed `lrovember y12,y 1918. Serial No. 262,251.y ,n
the United States, residing at Downersy Grove, in the county of Dupage and kState of Illinois, and at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, respectively,
, haveainvented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Dump Stokers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in side-dump stokers and has for its general object to provide a fire-box floor construc-kk tion of novel and advantageous structure.
provement in underfeed furnaces wherein certain floor plate structures between the retort and a side-dump closure, are tiltable laterally for effecting a side-spilling movement of the fuel-and-ash-bed. In some instances it is desirable to lighten the moving parts of a side-feeding door-construction 'tlnd rigidly to fix the major portion of the oor. bodiment of our present invention, which consists in the features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings wherein we have illustrated two available embodiments of our .invention, yFigure 1 is a fragmentaryl plan view of a portion of the fire-box floor and retort of an underfeed furnace; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.;
F ig- 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified structure embodying features of our invention; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section therethrough on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Between the side wall 10 of the furnace and the retort 11 a partition or footing 12 may be provided, primarily to separate a side ash pit 13 from the wind box 14, the footing being supplemented as needed with a metal frame comprising the beam l5 and angle frame 16. rThe fixed portions of the floor structure may be rigidly mounted to span between the frame 16 and the suitablyfixed retort 11. Brackets 17 carry the rook shaft 18 for a side-dump closure or wing 19, a handle 2O beyond the front wall 21 of the furnace enabling the wing to be dropped In an application, Serial N o. 262,252, filed lof I even date herewith we have described an imf These objects we attain in the emy to dumpy its load intor the. below.
Otherash disposalfmeans, laterally spaced from the retort, may be employed ,if desired. r The floorstructure intervening between they wingz19k and the retort includes a series of fixed plates 23, preferably relativelyshort in the direction of length of the retort,and spaced Lapart somewhat tO-leave between them severaltransverse slots.y Inl theseslots are arranged tiltable fingers 24, pivoted on a shaft 25 that extendslongitudinally of the furnacek and is mounted inthe has an edge contour to conform, when i front wall 21. Eachfof these tiltable fingers the finger is lowered, with`.those surfaces of the plate'sthat are presented toward the combustionjchamber, and each has an arof shaped inner .edge 26 concentric with, the
`shaft 25, so as tokeep the slot closediwhen,r the finger is rocked on the` shaft 25. Theseveral fingers are connectedy respectively by links27to cranks 28fon a rock shaft 29 that'.r i
is mounted yin suitable bearings 30 Onthe partition beam 15, said rock shaft extending throughthe front wall and vbeing provided with an operating'handle 31` by which the fingers may matically.v` f f In the particular construction shown, and
preferred,the 4retort 11 has a flaring "lip partlyj afforded by the integral margin l1 be elevated, manually or autosoy ofthe retortland partly by the sloped innerk ends kof Ithe fixedfloor, plates and through these ends are made twyers 32.` yAccordingly the,k fingers 24 preferably have inner end 'Slopes corresponding with Such lip contour,
but they need not have twyers therein.k
We prefer that the tiltable fingers 24 shalli be confined to a `zonefrelatively close to the j l retort, and that laterally beyond suchv zone of the fingers 24 there ybe a second, Zoney of movable elements by which fuel, laterally displaced by they fingers,x`may ybe further fed .laterally toward the dump-closure' 19.
As shown inFigs. 1l `and 2, the construction f provided with respect to ,the fingers 24 may be substantiallyy duplicated in ythev 'second zone by arranging fixed floor plates 35 corn, responding with the plates 23 and intervening fingers 36 movable` between the plates. i ,y
These fingers are mounted on va longitudinal shaft 37 at their outer edges and have their inner edges arc-shaped as at 38, so that they substantially maintain contact with the arcshaped outer edges of the lingers 24. Such outer fingers 36 are tiltable` by means of links 39jand cranks 40 operatedby the rock shaft 41 that is movable by a handleAQ at the front of the furnace. It is not necessary that the rocking' fingers be providedzin both outer and inner zones as hereinbefore suggested, and if. confined tov one of two par:- allel zones, such lingers may be in either thereof, though preferably this may-'Icel the inner zone. Thus, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4t, themovable elements of the outer zone may be movable floor plates 35', rather than stationary'onesoperated by lin-ks andlev-ers and" by rock shaft 411 afterthe manner of operation of the outer-zone fingers 36 hereinbefore described.
It will beapparentl that by maintaining stationarythe floor plates that are adjacent the retort' and' providing relatively narrow transversely extending tiltable fingers betweensuch 4stationary* iioor plates, the'moving parts are,v lightened and although the side-feeding effect is reducedsomewhat, the fingers servead'equately` to remove orbreak up clinlers, and to move a materialportion offthev ash. Either constructionshown will break up the portion of the fuel* andfash bed at't'heedge ofg and'laterally beyond:y the rctor-t; and,y will enablethe operator readilyY to clean the fire.- Itis preferable that the floor plates intervening between the fingers be provided with twyers 32 f0r supplyingA air to-maintain some combustion in the zoneof operation ofi the fingers, and it will be apparent that the construction describedy pracv ticallyy insures againstl the tota-l freeing of any'p'late portionofthe structure fi'orrrall' ash or fuel deposit so that the portions of the-floor in which the Afingers lwork are substantiallj'y insured against exposure to thel full heat of theY combustion chamber, and therebythe chance ofy warping4 or breakage ofY the floor'structureis minimized. For thisreason; it is-preferable, if' movement of` llarge floor platesin-.one -zone be desired, thatL such vzone betheouter one as show-n in Figs. 3 and 4. The-constructions set forth enable evenaninexperienced operator ton clean the furnace readily without material likelihood of waste dueto the feeding of live fuel acrossl the Hoor and through the dump opening;
While we have herein described in some detail particular Vembodiments. of our invention fori purposes of full disclosure, it will be apparent toV those slill'edfin, the art'y that numerous changes in details'may be made without departure from the spirit of our invention within the scopeV of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
1. In a furnace, the combination with a retort, means at the side and separated from said retort for disposing of ash, and an intervening` Hoor section comprising fixed iioor plates and side-dumping fingers disposed between saidv plates and extending transversely with respect to the retort, said fingers being tiltable to elevate their inner retortward ends, and means for operating said fingers.
2. In an underfeed furnace fire-box floor structure, the combina-tion'with a retort, and ash disposal means paralleling said retort and spaced therefrom, ofV intervening iioor structure comprising av series of relatively short floor' plates adjacent the retort, and intervening narrow, transversely-extending, movable fingers, between said plat-es, a pivotshaft whereon the said fingers are mounted adjacent their ends that are remote from the retort, and means for rockingy said iingers about saidA pivotal axis.
3. In an underfeed furnace fire-box.. structure, the combination with a retort and means spaced apart from said retorty and parallelingthe same for disposing ofy ash, of interveningfloor struct-ure comprising a plurality'oflseries of laterally tiltable means.y and means for operating said tilt-able means of eachfseries independently of the other to feed fuel'- and` ash laterally from the retort' toward the. ash disposalmeans, one said series ofl tiltable means comprising a plurality of fingers pivoted adjacent their outer extremities, and means for elevating the inner or retortward ends of the fingers.
