To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ANDREW D. Down,' a"- citizen of the United tates residin at Hoboken, in the county of I ludson, btate of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telegraph Systems, of which the following is afull', clear;.concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to telegraph system and particularly to printing telegraph systems that are provided with sunflower switches for connecting transmitting and receiving apparatus to telegraph circuits;
One object of the invention is to provide a printing telegraph systemhaving a single sunflower switch at each station that shall govern the operation of the transmitting and recording apparatus at thehome station and transmit to the telegraph circuit and to the I associated home recorder impulses which are selected bythe transmitting apparatus.
In the printing telegraphsystemutilized I for describing the invention, a telegraph station is provided with transmitting apparatus and a home recorder which may be connected to a duplex telegraph circuit if so desired. The transmittingapparatus embodies a keyboard or a tape transmitter for selecting the impulses to be transmitted and a series of relays for storing the selected impulses which areto be transmitted to the telegraph circuit. The singlefigure of the accompanying drawing is a diagrammatic view of a printing telegraph system constructed in accordance with this invention. Referring to the accompanying drawing, a sunflower switch 1 is connected to a telegraph circuit embodying conductors 2 and 3 that may beutilized if so desired for operating a polarized transmitting relay'-(not circuit. The sunflower switch 1 serves to control the operationof a transmitter 4'and a recorder 55, and connects the transmitting apparatus to the telegraph cii-cuit.
The transmitting apparatus embodies a current-control. means 6,'which may be a keyboard transmitter or at tape transmitter and includes a plurality of contact terminals engages a'contact'terminal '18, is operated whenever any of; the switch'members 12 to [16 inclusive areoperate'd. .The current control means 6 is operated to select switching arms 12, 16 and 17 and completes a circuit from ground, through the switching member 17 ,contact terminal 18, relay 100, armature 98, armature 81, where the circuit divides, one branch extending through the. switch member 16, coil 28 of the selector relay 23, and the battery 83 tofground, and the second branch extending through the switch member 12, contact terminal .7, coil 24 of the selecting magnet 19, and battery 83 to ground. The relays 19 and 23 are operated and holding circuits are established from battery 83, through coils 29 and 33, the armatures 39 and 43, relay 80, and the armature 96 to ground.
When relay 80 is operated, the armature 81 breaks the circuit previously traced through the energizing coils 24 and 28 of the selector relays 19 and 23, and the armature 82 completes a circuit from ground through the battery 84, armature 82, coil 86 of the start relay 85, contact segment 72, brush 45, and contact segment 71 to ground. Thus, the start relay 85 is operated to complete a circuit from battery 89 through start magnet 90 and to establish a holding circuit for itself from the batter 92. The start magnet operates the latch member 62 to release the brush arm in order to permit'it to effect one revolution over the segments of the sunflower switch 1. the brush arm 60 rotates in a counter-clockwise direction, the closed circuit which was completed by the brush 63 through the ring 64, the contact segment 70, the line battery 109, and the telegraph circuits 2 and 3, is broken by the brush 63 disengaging the contact segment 70, and, as the brush 45 disengages contact with the contact segtelegraph circuit 2.

Inasmuch as the selector magnets 20, 21 and 22 have not been operated, no impulses are transmitted to the telegraph circuit when the brush arm 60 passes over the contact 7 segments 66, 6'7 and 68. However, when the 9 brush 63 engages the contact segment 69, a circuit is completed from the battery 109 through the, relay 105, contact ring 64, brush 63, contact segment 69, and the armature 38'of the selectorrelay 23 to the line conductor 2. The 'line' relay 105 is again operated and a circuit is completed from the battery 107 through the armature 106, contact ring 74, brush 45, contact segment 79 and the selective magnet 55 to ground. 2
The magnets 51and' 55 of the recording means 5 have been energized, and when the brush 45 of the sunflower switch 1 bridges the contact segments 71 and '73, a circuit is established for effecting the printing of the selected character and for operating the look-out relay 93 in order to release the operated selecting relays. The circuit which is completed through the lock-out relay may be traced from the ground through the contact segments 71 and 73, which are bridged by brush 45, coil 95 and the battery 104 to ground. The armature 96 of the lookout relay opens the circuit previously traced from the battery 83 through the locking coils 29 and 33 of selector magnets 19 and 23, and completes a holding circuit for relay 93 in case the relay 100 is operated. The armature 98 prevents a further selection by the current-control means. Thus, in case any key and the switch 17 is maintained in a closed position, a circuit is established for the relay 100 from the battery 103. Accordingly, if the look-out relay 93 is energized when the. relay 100 is in an operative position, a holding circuit is established'for the lock-out relay 93, from the battery 97 through the armatures 101 and 96. r
