Be it known that I, EARL J. FRANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for Type-Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n type casting machines, such for example as monotype machines.
The objects of the invention are to provide mechanism which may be used in connection with machines of this kind to enable the machine to form corner quads which may be used for holding the type accurately in the desired positions, or to form corner rule quads for printing the corner portions of a border, or for analogous purposes; also to improve the construction of apparatus of this kind in other respects hereinafter specified.

Corner quads may be used for securely holding type in position or the quads may be provided with printing faces and used for forming the corners of a border and in this way produce a more perfect border than is now generally produced. The quads for this purpose are substantially Lshaped and type casting machines as now used cannot produce quads of this shape. 1
In carrying outthis invention, the usual I mold of a type casting machine may be utilized, and by means of the changes hereinafter described, is adapted to cast L- shaped quads. The other parts of the casting machine are not changed and may be of any usual or suitable construction. The mold shown in the drawings to which the invention is applied includes the usual side blocks A A, between which the type is cast, a cross block B, which has a part b, which when the cross block is in the position shown in Fig. 6, forms a side wall of the cavity in which the type is formed, and which is movable in a guide way Z) to feed the formed type C, (Fig. 1) from the mold. The two side blocks A A are spaced apart, forming a slot D in which in machines heretofore made, the mold blade is slidably arranged. The mold blade, the side blocks and the cross block form the four walls of the cavity in which the type is cast, the molten metal flowing into the 'cavity through the passage or jet opening (Z. The face of the type is formed by a matrix, not shown, which closes the upper end of the mold cavity. All of these parts have heretofore been used in type casting machines and of themselves constitute no part of this invention.
In order to cast angular or L-shaped corner quads, two mold blades are arranged in the slot between the two side blocks, the larger of the two blades E being rigidly held in the slot and terminating at a slight distance from the end of the slot, this distance being in the construction shown, substant'ally equal to the width of the smaller and movable mold blade F. The stationary mold blade E is provide with a hole 6 in which a point block G is arranged which extends across the entire width of the slot D between the side blocks, and which is held in place to press the stationary mold blade against the base of the slot 1). Any other means for rigidly holding the stationary mold blade in its operative position may be used.
The movable mold blade F is provided with a hole or slot f shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7, which is so formed as to permit the blade F to move freely from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 6. The point block Gr engages the lower edge of the slot f and thereby guides the mold blade in its movement and holds it in The outer end of the movable mold blade is provided with a cross pin hole f in which the usual mold blade actuating means (not shown) are adapted to enter, the outer end of the mold blade being provided in the construction shown with an enlarged portion or boss f through which the cross pin hole f extends, so that the mold blade may 00- operate with type casting machines as now made.
In the operation of this device, the metal enters the L-shaped cavity through the jet opening at when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 6, thus forming theangular or corner quad. The cross block then moves to a position out of engagement with the quad and the movable mold blade moves to its inner position, pushing the quad into the path of movement of the cross block, as shown in Fig. 1, from which position it is advanced by the cross block when the same moves back into operative relation to the V mold cavity, The device can be added to a type casting machine with comparatively little additional expense and enables the machine to produce corner quads, corner rule uads or analogous devices which improve 7 t e appearance of the printed work.
The mold embodying the invention is shown as used in connection witha well known form of type casting machine, but it is not intended to limit the invention to use on this type of machine since it will be understood that the invention can be applied equally wellto other kinds of type casting machines. a. In a type casting machine, the-combination of a mold havinga channel, t-wo mold blades arranged in saidchannel, ne of said mold blades terminating'in proximity to the end of' said channel and the other mold blade terminating at a greater distance from the end of said channel'to form in'said end a substantially L-shaped mold cavity, all portions of which extend throughout the depth of said channel, and means for rigidly securing said; first mentioned 'bladeagainst movement, including astopmember secured V to aside of said mold and extending through a hole in said blade, said other blade being adapted to move endwise in said channel to expel a casting formed in said cavity.
6. In a type casting machine, the combination of a mold having a channel, two mold blades arranged in said channel, one of said mold blades terminating in proximity to the end of said channel and the other mold blade terminating at a greater distance from the end of said channel to form in said end a substantially L-shaped mold cavity, and means for rigidly securing said first mentioned blade against movement, including a stop member secured to a side of said mold and engaging one edge of a hole in said blade, and a wedge also extending into said hole and engaging said stop member and the opposite edge of said hole, said other blade being movable to expel a casting formed in said cavity.
7. In a type casting machine, the combination of a mold having a channel provided with permanent side and bottom walls, a relatively wide mold blade and a narrow mold blade, both of said blades being arranged in said channel, said blades, when the parts of the mold are in a position to receive the molten metal, being so spaced as to form a substantially L-shaped mold cavity, all portions of which extend throughout the depth of said channel, a cross block adapted, when in one position to close the end of said channel and to reciprocate to discharge type from said mold, one of said blades being movable to discharge from said cavity a casting formed therein into the path of movement of said cross block.
8. In a type casting machine, the combination of a mold having a channel provided with permanent side and bottom walls, means adapted to close one end of said channel, stationary and movable mold blades arranged lengthwise in said channel and extending substantially throughout the depth of said channel, the end portions of said blades forming with said channel closing means a mold cavity in the end of said channel, one of said mold blades extending at a greater distance from said closin means to form an L-shapedmold cavity a1 portions of which extend throughout the depth of said channel, and one ot said mold blades being movable to push the casting from said cavity.
