SHUTTLE-THROWING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAroLnoN Pnrrn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVoonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new andlmproved Shuttle-Throwing Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to looms and its object is to provide a new and improved shuttle throwin mechanism arranged to impart a powerful movement to the shuttle to move the same through the open shed without danger of sticking therein.
Another object is to permit of readily applying the improved shuttle throwing mechanism to power looms as now constructed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved shuttle throwing mechanism applied to the lay of a loom;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The lay 10 of a loom is provided at the sides with guide rods 11 and 12 on which are mounted to slide pickers 13 and 14 of any approved construction for alternately throwing a shuttle from one side of the loom to the other during the movement of the pickers 13 and 14 toward each other. The pickers 13 and 14 are attached to a chain, cable or other suitable flexible connection 15 which passes around guide pulleys 16 and 17 arranged on the sides of the lay, the flexible connection also passing around guide pulleys 18, 19 and 20 arranged on the front of the lay. as plainly shown in Fig. 1. One end of the flexible connection 15 is connected with one or more springs 21 attached to a fixed part 22 forming part of the frame of the loom. The other end of the flexible connection 15 is attached to a collar 25 secured on the free end of a lever 26 provided with a slot 27 engaged by a block 28 fastened by a bolt 29 or other means to a support 30 forming part of the frame of the loom. By the arrangement described an adjustable fulcrum is provided for the lever 26.
On the lever 26 is secured a bracket 35 by the use of bolts or other fastening devices 36, and on this bracket is journaled a friction roller 37 in'engagement with the peripheral face of a cam 38 having a projecting striking lug 39 adapted to engage the friction roller 37 to impart a quick and powerful downward swinging movement to the lever 26. It will be noticed that when this downward swinging movement is given to thelever 26 a pull is exerted on one end of the flexible connection 15 whereby a traveling motion is given to the said flexible connection, and the pickers 13 and 14 are moved simultaneously toward each other to impart the desired movement to the shuttle with a view to force the same through the open shed from one side of the loom to the other. During the traveling movement given to the friction roller 15, the spring 21 is placed under tension and as soon as the striking lug 39 passes the friction roller 37 a quick return movement is given-t0 the flexible connection 15 to move the pickers 13 and 14 back into normal outermost position. It is understood that the pickers return to outermost position prior to the shuttle reaching the end of its travel through the open shed to be received by the picker at the other side.
The cam 38 is secured on a cam shaft 40 driven from the crank shaft of the loom at the same speed and hence the lay 10, the lever 26 and the pickers 13 and 14 move in unison one relative to the other. In order to return the lever 26 to uppermost position the following arrangement is made: On the cam shaft 40 is secured a gear wheel 50 having an indentation 51 diametrically opposite the striking lug 39 and the gear wheel 50 is in mesh with a pinion 52 mounted to turn on a stud 53 adjustably secured in a slot 54 formed in an arm 55 pivotally connectedat one end by a pivot 56 with a sectional link 57 pivotally connected at 58 with a bracket 59 attached by bolts or other fastening devices 60 to the lever 26. The sections of the link57 are adjustably connected with each other by bolts 61 or other fastening devices topermit of lengthening .or shortening the link. The arm 55 is provided at its free end with a slot 65 slidingly engaged by a block 66 provided with a pivot 67 held in the upper end of a bracket 68 attached to the support 30, previously mentioned. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the support for the pin ion 52 moves with the lever 26 and hence the said pinion is kept in mesh at all times with the gear wheel 50 and as the said pinion 52 is located on the top of the gear wheel 50 and diametrically opposite the friction roller 37, it is evident that the lever 26 is given a return swinging movement in an upward direction by the pinion 52 traveling on the top of the gear wheel 50. It will also be noticed that by providing the lever 26 with the adjustable fulcrum the friction roller 37 can be set in proper relation to the cam 38 to obtain accurate movement of the pickers 13 and 1e relative to the movement of the lay 10. It will further be noticed that by the use of the adjustable stud 53 and the sliding connection of the arm 55 with the bracket 68 the desired accurate adjustment can be had of the pinion 52 relative to the gear wheel 50 to cause the lever 26 to return at the proper time.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be noticed that the friction roller 37 travels on the peripheral face of the cam wheel 50 during about five-sixths of a revolution thereof with the lever :26 at a standstill, and only during the remaining one-sixth of a revolution the striking lug 39 is in engagement with the said friction roller 37 and hence a quick downward and quick return or upward movement is given to the lever 26 to move the pickers 13 and 1a toward each other and back to normal outermost position prior to the shuttle reaching the other side.
In case the cam shaft 40 is rotated twice the speed of the crank shaft then the cam 38 is provided with two striking lugs 39 located diametrically opposite each other. In this case the gear wheel 50 is provided with two indentations 51 located diametrically opposite each other.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A shuttle throwing mechanism for looms, comprising a pair of pickers mounted to slide toward and from each other on opposite sides of a loom, a single flexible connection connected with the said pickers, a spring connected with one end of the said flexible connection, a lever connected with the other end of the said flexible connection, and a revoluble cam imparting a swinging motion to the said lever in one direction to actuate the flexible connection and thereby move the pickers toward each other, the return move ment of the pickers and flexible connection being accomplished by the action of the said spring.
2. A shuttle throwing mechanism for looms, comprising a pair of pickers mounted to slide toward and from each other on opposite sides of a loom, a flexible connection connected with the said pickers, a spring connected with one end of the said flexible connection, a lever connected with the other end of the said flexible connection, a revoluble cam imparting a swinging motion to the said lever in one direction to actuate the flexible connection and thereby move the pickers toward each other, the return movement of the pickers and flexible connection being accomplished by the action of the said spring, and means independent of the said spring and connected with the lever to return the same.
3. A shuttle throwing mechanism for looms, comprising a pair of pickers mounted to slide toward and from each other on opposite sides of a loom, a single flexible c011 nection connected with the said pickers, a spring connected with one end of the said flexible connection, a lever connected with the other end of the said flexible connection, a friction roller mounted on the said lever, and a revoluble cam having a projecting striking lug adapted to engage the said fric tion roller to impart a swinging motion to the said lever in one direction to move the pickers toward each other.

A shuttle throwing mechanism for looms, comprising a pair of pickers mounted to slide toward and from each other on opposite sides of a lover, a flexible connection connected with the said pickers, a spring connected with one end of the said flexible connection, a lever connected with the other end of the said flexible connection, a friction roller mounted on the said lever, a revoluble cam having a projecting striking lug adapted to engage the said friction roller to impart a swinging motion to the said lever in one direction to move the pickers toward each other, a gear wheel rotating with the said cam and provided with an indented portion diametrically opposite the said striking lug, a pinion in mesh with the said gear wheel and disposed diametrically opposite the said friction roller, and a support for the said pinion and moving with the said lever.
5. A shuttle throwing mechanism for looms, comprising a pair of pickers mounted to slide toward and from each other on opposite sides of a loom, a flexible connection connected with the said pickers, a spring connected with one end of the said flexible connection, a lever connected with the other end of the said flexible connection, a friction roller mounted on the said lever, a revoluble cam having a projecting striking lug adapted to engage the said friction roller to impart a swinging motion to the said lever in one direction to move the pickers toward each other, a gear wheel rotating with the said cam and provided with an indented portion diametrically opposite the said striking lug, a pinion in mesh with the said gear wheel and disposed diametrically opposite the said friction roller, an arm on which the said pinion is adj ustably mounted, a fixed support on which one end of the said arm is pivoted, and a bracket pivoted on the said lever and on which the other end of the said arm is pivoted.
6. A shuttle throwing mechanism for looms, comprising a pair of movable pickers, a single flexible connection connected with the said pickers, guide rollers around which the said flexible connection passes, a spring connected with one end of the said flexible connection to move the pickers outward away from each other, a lever to which the other end of the said flexible connection is secured, a bracket adjustable on the said lever, a friction roller journaled on the said bracket, a driven cam shaft, and a cam secured on the said shaft and provided with a striking lug adapted to engage the said friction roller to impart a swinging motion to the said lever in one direction to move the pickers toward each other.
