JAR-CLOSURE CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed May 20, 1919. Serial No. 298,418.
one of its objects the provision of a deviceof this character which is provided with means for sealing the cap to the jar by the heat from the contents of said jar, so that the contents 1s efiiciently sealed and prevented from workin or spoiling.
Another object 0 this invention is the provision of a jar closure cap of the above stated character which shall be simple, durable, andefiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a .comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully describedand claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the follow-- ing description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a jar closure cap constructed in accordance with my invention, and,
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the cap applied and sealed to the neck of-a jar.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates an ordinary-fruit jar having a screw threaded neck 2 to which my invention is adapted to be applied. The body 3 of the cap has formed thereon an annular flange 4 provided with screw threads 5 so that the cap can be readily and conveniently' threaded on to and off of the neck of the jar. The body of the cap adjacent the annular flange 4 is provided with a circular groove 6 adapted to have positioned therein parafiin or other sealing composition 7 which and held within the is disposed directly over the upper edge of the neck of the jar when the cap is applied to the jar. The composition forms in fact a gasket, but it is obviously necessary to confine the fusible material within the required limit, and this is effected by making the groove of the cross section shown compared with the thickness of the neck. The groove being thus closed, the fusible material cannot escape while fluid.
The cap is preferably constructed of wator-proof paper having the screw threads 5 pressed therein and also the annular groove 6. The cap is adapted to be sold with the paraflin or sealing composition positioned groove 6 and on filling the jar with preserves the cap is applied to the neck of the 'ar and the heat from the preserves melts t e parafiin or sealing composition causing the same to run and adhere to the neck of the jar thus establishing an air-tight connection between the cap and the neck of the jar, also obviating the use of the usual sealing rings which are usually constructed of rubber and the life of which is very limited.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope f the invention as claimed.
Having thus-described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a receptacle including'a neck portion, of a cap including a fiat portion and a flange fitting over the neck, the cap having a groove on the inner side at the juncture of the flat portion and the cap, and .a gasket formed of material readily fusible and fitting within the groove, the cross section of the groove being less than the thickness of the neck wall, preventing the fusible material from escaping from the groove when the cap is in place.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
