Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed February 27, 1920. Serial No. 361,825.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, ANDREW N. PINK and CHAnLns J. CoUcrrrnY, both citizens of the United States, and both residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Game-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention has reference to gameboards, and has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character. More specifically our invention has reference to a spin euchre game-board, that is, a gameboard on which the cards of a euchre pack are indicated and which has a spinner or pointer by means of which the different plays of the game are accomplished. In a game of euchre, after the players and dealer have been selected, it is the invariable custom to shuttle the cards. This requires considerable time and causes numerous delays due to the inability of many players to shuffle properly and to other causes. In addition to such delays, if the cards are not shuflied properly all cards of a suit be dealt to one hand, or they may be dealt substantially in the order in which they were played. The dealing of the cards to the players further delays the playing of the game and there is always a possibility of a misdeal. on numerous occasions, such as card parties, it is desired to play a given number of games in a given time. It frequently happens that some play ers have completed the series of games, before others are half through. In order to overcome these difficulties, we provide a game-board on which the cards of a euchre ack are arranged in accordance with what is regarded as an ideal shuflle, and which does away with the necessity of shuffling or dealing the cards, and eliminates the possibility of misdeals. With our game-board, it is possible, and we have found-it to be the fact, for a series of games at a card party to be completed at substantially the same time.
Of course, there is always the possibility of losing a card from the pack, before the game, and during the game, requiring a search for the missing card or cards and frequently a new deal. It is also quite a task to distribute and collect the packs of cards at parties. lVe provide a neat, attractive and compact euchre game-board, which can with very ,little trouble be quickly distributed or collected and which does away with all the discomforts due to lost cards.
Other objects and purposes of our invention will appear in the course of the following specification in which the figure shown in the drawing is a front view of one form of a game board embodying our invention.
A board 1, of suitable material such as heavy card board or light wood, has on its surface a circle 2, which is painted, stamped, or otherwise suitably indicated thereon. This circle is divided into four equal sections 3, 4., 5, 6, on each of which is indicated the conventional sign representing one of the four suits of a euchre pack. No particular arrangement is necessary, but for purposes of illustration we have shown on sections 3, 4, 5 and 6, the characters representing spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts, respectively. Outside of the circle 2 and preferably forming a circle concentric therewith, we have indicated in any suitable way, such as by printing or stamping, the cards 7, of a complete euchre pack. F or the sake of simplicity in the drawing, we have indicated the aces by A, the kings by K, the queens by Q, the jacks by J, and the tens and nines by their respective numerals. The suits of the cards are indicated thereon by their respective conventional signs. The arrangement of the cards 7 represents the shuffle, and many arrangements are possible. lVhile we do not confine ourselves to any particular arrangement, in the preferred form, as shown in the drawing, the cards are arranged in four series in the following order of values A, K, Q, J, 10, 9. In this arrangement we have also, so far as possible, distributed the cards by suits in the following order: spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts, as shown. It will therefore be seen that all cards of the same denomination, such as aces for instance, are separated by an equal number of cards, and that no two cards of the same suit adjoin each other.
In the center of the circle 2, there is pivoted a spinner 8, which extends to the cards 7, and the operation of which is readily understood.
There are numerous games of euchre with slight variations, but in general, they are played in the same manner and we do not limit our invention to any particular game. For the purpose of illustrating the operation of our invention, we'will describe the ordinary game of euchre, played with a pack of twenty-four cards, all below the nines hav ing been discarded, and in which five cards are dealt each player and the trump turned. The rank of the cards, when playing euchre on our game-board is the same as in the usual game, and of course the same rules as to taking tricks and scoring are followed.
Obviously, when playing euchre on our board, n0 cards are dealt, and no trump turned, however the player, who would have been the dealer, and consequently would have turned the trump, makes the trump. This he does by spinning the pointer 8 and naming the suit trump indicated by the section 3, 4L, 5, or 6, over which the pointer 8 comes to rest.
In the ordinary game, the trump having been determined, the player to the left of the dealer leads a card and each player in r0 tation plays a card to the lead. The cards thus played constitute a trick. A player may follow suit or trump. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick and trumps win all the other suits. The winner of the trick leads to the next, and so on until the five tricks are played. In our spin euchre game, the players play their cards by spinning the pointer 8, the card 7 over which the pointer comes to rest being the card played. The leader spins first and is followed by each player spinning in rotation, which constitutes a trick. If five cards are dealt to the players in the ordinary game, in our spin euchre game each of the players would have five spins, that is a spin for each card, and the usual rules as to rank of cards, scoring, etc., would be followed.
hat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s:
1. A game-board with a circle indicated thereon divided into quarters to represent the four suits of a euchre pack of cards, a pack of euchre cards arranged on the circumference of said circle and a spinner pivoted in the center of the circle.
2. A spin euchre game-board, having a spinner pivoted in the center thereof, a pack of euchre cards forming a circle around the spinner and t is circle thus formed divided into quarters each representing a suit.
3. A spin euchre game-board having a .circle divided into quarters representing the four suits of cards. a euchre pack arranged concentric with said circle with cards of the same denomination equally separated by the same number of cards with no cards of the same suit adjacent to each other, and a spinner pivoted in the center of said circle for selecting a suit or a card.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this twentieth day of February,
ANDRElV XV. PINK, CHARLES J. COUG-HTRY.
