Description

C. C, BAILEY. AIR RIVET BUCKER. APPLICATION FILED 'FEB. 24, 1919.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
INVENTQR. 6Z2 M22266 6'34 zZe ATTORNEY.
AIR BIVET-BUCKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920..
Application filed. February 24, 1919. Serial No. 278,868.
all in 710m it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE C. BAILEY, citizen of the United States, residing at ington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Air Rivet llucirers, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention provides means for backing or supporting a rivet when upsetting the end thereof. In accordance with the in vention a novel form of device is provided, the same being designated in the trade as a rivet backer.
The invention has for its object to provide a rivet bucker which is extensible so as to meet all conditions and which when in position does not require to be held or si'ipported by hand and which may be readily detached after the rivet has been properly set so as to be properly positioned for supporting the next rivet.
The drawing illustrates a preferred em bodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without v i'leparting from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
in the drawing hereto attached,
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a rivet bucker embodying the invention showing the same collapsed.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
big. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the relation of the parts when extended.
orresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The appliance or bucker comprises a plurality of sections having a telescopic arrangement and adapted to be extended by fluid pressure, the movable sections having piston heads for confining the fluid and preventing escape thereof. As shown the device comprises three sections 1, 2 and 3 disposed one within the other and having a piston. tip and adapted to be extended by fluid pressure. The several sections are preferably of cylindrical form. The main section 1 is closed at its lower end by means of a cap l: which is screwed therein. The upper end of the section 1 has an inner flange 5 which constitutes a stop to limit the extension of the section 2 and to form a guide to maintain the section 2 in concentric arrangement with the section 1. A longitudinal passage 6 is provided at one Side of the section 1 and opens at its lower end into the section, as indicated at 7 The upper end of the passage 6 is closed by means of a plug 8. A hose pipe 9 connects with the upper portion of the passage 6 and leads from a suitable source of fluid pressure supply such as compressed air, steam or the like. A valve 10 is located in the length of the passage 6 at a point between the inlet 9 and the outlet '7. When the valve 10 is open the fluid pressure has unobstructed passage into the lower end of the section 1 so as to effect extension of the the sections and holding of the device in operative position.
The section 2 is provided at its lower end with a piston which comprises a packing 11 and confining shoulders 12 and 13. The shoulder 12 is preferably formed as a part of a section 2 and the shoulder 13 is part of a wing which is threaded to the end portion of the section 2 beyond the shoulder 12. The upper end of the section 2 has an inner flange 1 which performs the same office as the flange 5.
The section 3 is provided at its lower end with pistons 15 which obtain a snug fit within the section 2. The upper end of the section 3 is closed and recessed to conform to the head of the rivet which obtains a seat therein when the device is in operative position.
The several sections may be of any relative length and are of such construction as to provide a substantial appliance and one that may be readily and conveniently handied. The hose pipe 9 is connected with a tank containing compressed air or with any source of fluid pressure supply.
is arranged so that one end of the section 1 engages a suitable support after which the valve 10 is opened, thereby permitting the fluid pressure to pass into the sections 1 and 2 and extend the same so as to cause the outer end of the section 3 to engage the rivet, the device being retained in position by fluid pressure which is supplied to the device as long as the same is in operative position. A fter the rivet has been upset the fluid pressure is cut off by closing the valve 10 when the sections will collapse and thereby per- After a rivet has been placed in position the device 1" mit the removal of the device and its ready adjustment to the neXt rivet to be set.
It is to be understood that provision is had for escape of the fluid pressure to admit of the device collapsing. The valve 10 is of the two-Way type and in the position shown in Fig. 3 admits of fluid pressure passing from the pipe 9 through the passage 6 into the loWer end of the section 1. When'the valve 10 is turned to occupy a position indicated in Fig. 1 the pressure Within the device is relieved and permitted to escape so that the sections maybe telescoped to admit of the device being removed and again applied to the required position. for use.
The foregoing description and the drawing have reference to What may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- A rivet bucker, comprising an outer section having an inner flange at one end and a longitudinal passage at one side opening into the opposite end, a cap closing the latter end and having a recess in communication With the passage, an intermediate section open throughout its length telescoping with the outer section and having an inner flange at its outer end and an annularpiston at its inner end, an inner'section closed at its ends and telescoping with the intermediate section and having a solid piston at its inner end, and a valve in said side passage for controlling the admission of a motivemedium to the device or exhausting the same therefrom.
l n testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
