LEE D. LEVIIS, OE TULSA, OKLAHOTIEA.
WRENCH.
Application filed. December 4, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Len D. LEwIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for its object the provision of a wrench capable of being easily and quickly adjusted and when so adjusted will be held securely in position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the monkey type having a stationary jaw and a movable jaw and a shank extending from each of said jaws, with means to permit of a quick and ready locking and unlocking of the movable jaw, so as to readily adjust the wrench for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character which consists of a minimum number of parts, so constructed as to be readily taken apart or assembled, so as to obtain access to the operating parts of the wrench and to reduce its cost of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanyingdrawings In the'drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 Fig. 2 illustrating the manner of securing the locking member or handle upon the wrench;
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the outer end of the shank of the stationary jaw; and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the rotatable handle.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The wrench as illustrated in the accompanying drawings includes a jaw 10, which will be hereinafter referred to as the stationary jaw, a jaw 11, hereinafter referred to as the movable jaw. Both the jaws 10 and 11 have extending therefrom shanks 12 and 13 respectively, the former passing through an opening 14 formed in the movable jaw as is usual in wrenches of this type.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Serial No. 265,269.
The opposite end of the shank 12 is substantially cylindrical and is longitudinally grooved as shown at 15, to provide opposite side flanges 16 which act as a guide for the end of the shank 13, tae latter being movable in the roove 15.
The adjacent faces of the ends of the shanks 12 and 13 are formed with teeth 17 and 18 respectively, which are adapted to engage one another and to be held in such engagement through the medium of means to be presently described. The teeth 17 and 18 are disengaged through the action of a spring 19 carried by the shank 13 and bearing against the opposed face of the shank 12.
Rotatably mounted upon the ends of the shanks 12 and 13 is a sleeve 20, the latter forming a hand grip for the wrench. This sleeve is held against displacement through the medium of a pin 21, which passes through an opening 22 in the end of the shank 13 and engages oppositely disposed segmental slots 23 formed in the sleeve or hand grip 20. This permits of limited rotation of the sleeve upon the shanks 12 and 13, but acts to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the sleeve and shanks. The inner periphery of the sleeve is provided with a longitudinally disposed groove 24, which extends throughout its length and is of sufficient width and depth to permit of a limited movement of the shanks 12 and 13 under the influence of the spring 19, so that when the said sleeve is rotated and the shank 13 of the jaw 11 enters the groove 24;, the teeth 17 and 18 will become disengaged and free movement of the jaw 11 is then possible. in order to lock the jaw 11 against movement the sleeve is rotated until the shank 13 is disengaged from the groove 24, whereupon the inner cylindrical periphery of the sleeve will move the shank 13 toward the shank 12 and cause a locking engagement of the teeth.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is re served to make such changes.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is A wrench comprising a shank having a jaw rigidly mounted upon one end thereof, a cylindrical enlargement provided at the opposite end of the shank and having a longitudinally disposed groove therein, a second jaw slidably mounted upon the shank, a shank extending from the slidably mounted
