CARBON-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
Application filed December 13,1919. Serial No. 344,537.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD D. Been, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbon-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n carbon'holders and it is intended for, use in arc lamps, moving picture machines, or any other instance where a like device or carbon I curing 15 member is to be secured.
The invention contemplates a carbon sedevice in' Which'the carbon is secured by means other than screws, which construction is generally conceded to be unsatisfactory, and to. this end I have devised a construction whereby the carbon is held in position by means of an eccentric member which bears against and securely holds the carbon in position.
It is known that heretofore eccentric dc-- vices forholdingl the carbon have been patented, but in the present invention I have provided means, in the form of a weight,
for not only securing the carbon, but for insuring a constant and uniform pressure against the carbon, which will substantially eliminate the danger of the hold thereon becoming loosened or faulty.

Fig. 2 a longitudinalsectional view thereof, taken on the line 2-2 through Fig. 1. The numeral 1 designates the body of the holder, which is formed with a pair of parallel jaws 2 projecting from one side thereof, and 3 designates a bracket member at the opposite side, by means of which it may be secured to any suitable support. The numeral 4 designates a contact block, set lnto the body member, between the jaws, and the .block is formed with a vertical, V-shaped groove, against which the wall of the carvbon, 5 1s to be secured and held. The carbon 5 is held in vertical position between the jaws, asillustrated, and in contact with said block by means of a spindle 7 which spindle is formed with an eccentric 8 at the point where it is adapted to bear against the wall of the carbon, that is, about midway of its length, so that, when the spindle a carbon member is turned, the eccentric portion of the spindle will not only contact with the carbon, but will securely hold itagainst the V- shaped groove of the block 4.
The spindle is provided with a lever 10, secured thereto preferably by a set screw 11, and adapted by its rise and fall, to partially rotate the spindle. This lever is provided with a weight 12, adjustably secured to its free end, whereby the proper pressure may be secured as between the eccentric and the carbon. p
1 The spindle is mounted in a pair of hearing blocks 14: which blocks are secured in the ends of the jaws 2, and these blocks are laterally adjustable therein and are provided with set screws 15 for securing them at the desired points.
It is evident that with this construction,
will be immediately compensated for by the weight, which will insure that-constant hold that is so much desired.
The ease and simplicity with which the carbon may be released and replaced by an other is evident and important, as it will be necessary only to raise the weighted lever slightly, of all engagement and can readily be removed or re-adjusted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r 1. In a carbon holder, the combination of a body :member having a pair of parallel jaws and a contact block held in the body portion between the jaws, said block hav ing a V-shaped vertical groove, with a shaft carrying an eccentric mounted in the ends of the jaws, a weighted lever securedto the shaft for imparting a slight rotary movement to the shaft, means for adjusting the" shaft with relation to the contact block, and adapted to be held between the said block and the shaft.
- 2. In a carbon holder, the combination of a body having a pair of parallel jaws, a removable contact block provided with a V- shaped vertical groove located in said body when the carbon will be released on the carbon by the eccentric,

3. Ina carbon holder comprising a body portion having a pair of jaws and a contact block for the carbon, the combination therewith of an adjustable rotary shaft mounted between the jaws, an eccentric on the shaft adapted to hold the carbon against the contact block, a lever secured to said shaft and an adjustable weight on the lever whereby a predetermined and constant pressure may be exerted by the eccentric on the surface of the carbon.
