UNITED STATES CATHERINE J. JONES, OF ALLEGANY, NEW YORK.
ADJUSTABLE COMBINATION SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
Application filed January 24, 1919. Serial No. 272,850.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CATHERINE J. J ONES,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegany, in the county of Cattaraugus and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Combination-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as supports and more particularly relates to an adjustable combination support.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above 5 mentioned character designed especially for use on the bed of an invalid for increasing the comfort of the invalid in various manners.
As an additional and equally important object this invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the component parts are novel in construction and are adjustable relative to each other so that the device may be easily placed in an extended operative positive or collapsed to assume a comparatively small compact form when not in use.
More particularly this invention consists in the provision of a device of the above mentioned character embodying similarly spaced members while arranged between the members is adjustable connecting means for insuring of the maintenance of the members in various positions of adjustment.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the number of parts are comparatively few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efliciency high.
Other objects, as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim, forming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view looking toward the under face of the sectional rest member.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a base member 1 preferably of substantially rectangular configuration, the corners being rounded and in addition, the member is relatively flat. A rest member generally desig-v nated by the numeral 2 is also employed and in shape and plan is similar to the shape of the member 1 but in addition is composed of sections 3, the marginal edges of which are connected to each other as by hinges 4.
As intimated, improved-means has been provided for adjustably connecting the sections together so that if desired the rest member may be supported in various positions of adjustment above the base member or may be held spaced from the base member when the device is positioned in a horizontal plane. In reducing this feature of the invention to practice, a tubular socket 5 is employed and is formed with attaching feet 6 through which the fasteners 7 are passed for anchoring the socket to the adjacent face of the base member. A sleeve section 8 is telescoped within the socket 5 and is rigidly held in engagement therewith through the instrumentality of suitable clamping means such as a set-screw 9 mounted through the socket and frictionally engaged with the outer surface of the sleeve section as indicated. A rod 10 is now employed, the upper end terminating in an ear 11 through which the pintle 129i the intermediate hinge 4 is passed, the opposite portion of the rod being telescoped within the slee e section and adjustably held in various positions of adjustment relative thereto through the instrumentality of a set-screw 13. In order that the section 3 of the rest member may be properly supported and maintained in various positions of adjustment relative to each other and to the rod, a band 14 is slidably mounted on the rod while operably arranged between the band and the under faces of the sections 3 and the member 2 are links 15. Suitable means such as a set-screw 16 is mounted in the band and designed to be frictionally engaged with the rod to releasably maintain the sections 3 in alinement with each other and parallel to the base member 1 or else maintain the sections so that they will lie in a V-shaped or an inverted V-shaped form in end elevation. By reason of the particular construction of this adjustable connecting means, it is apparent that the members 1 and 2 may be held in various positions of adjustment relative to each other and at the same time by loosening the set- screws 9, 13 and 16, the parts may be disconnected and arranged in a comparatively small compact form when not in use.
The device is intended to be used in various capacities for instance, when in the position shown it is capable of elevating bed clothes so that a nurse may conveniently give an invalid or patient a hot foot bath. The device may be also laid in a horizontal position on the under sheet and against the foot of the bed, so that the rest member will act as a means for shortening the bed, desirable by physicians in confinement cases and also acting as a rest or brace against which the patient may place his feet so as to facilitate a sitting position, thereby preventing the patient from sliding down in the bed.
It is also apparent that the device may be used as a table and arranged near the side of the bed and when in this position may also be adjusted so that the rest member is in a substantially V-shaped form in end elevation providing a substantial support for the arm of a patient when the patient is resting near one edge of the bed. Also, the device will serve as an effective means for maintaining pillows or hot water bottles in a desired position.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the inventon is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Still further embodiments of the invention than those herein especially defined may be resorted to as conditions or preference may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is v In a device of the class described a flat base member having a socket anchored on one face thereof, a sleeve telescopically and adjustably engaged with said socket, means for securing said sleeve in said socket, a rod adjustably mounted in said sleeve and having an apertured car on its upper end projecting longitudinally there from, a rest member composed of hingedly connected sections carried by said rod, one of the hinge pintles of said section passing through said apertured ear, and means slidable on said rod and connected with said rest member to provide for various adjustments of said rest member sections relatively to each other and to the rod.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
CATHERINE J. JONES.
