Description

I T. H. ELLINGTON.
WAGON REACH COUPLING- APPLICATI ON FILED Nov= as. 1919.
1,3 1,699, Piztented Dec. 7,1920.
IN VEN TOR.
WITNESS: /fl 24/ ATTORNEY.
THOMAS HENRY ELLINGTON, OF RICE, VIRGINIA.
WAGON-BEACH COUPLING.
Application filed November 18, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rice, in the county of Prince Edward and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Reach Couplings, of which the following is a specilication.
he object of my present invention is the provision of a wagon reach coupling calculated to lend increased strength to the front portion of the running gear of a wagon, and adapted to hold the usual tongue or pole against sagging, so that the weight of the same is entirely taken off the neck of the draft animal.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a perspective of so much of the front portion of a running gear as is necessary to illustrate the application of my novel coupling.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through the coupling.
Fig. 4: is an inverted plan view of the same.
Similar numerals corresponding parts in all of the drawings.
The gear illustrated comprises an axle 1, a sand bolster 2 arranged above and fixed with respect to the axle, and a body bolster 3 below which the axle 1 and sand bolster 2 are adapted to swing horizontally as a unit. Fixed with respect to and extend-v ing rearwardly of the axle 1 and sand bolster 2 are hounds 4i, and at 5 is the reach ordinarily employed.
Extending vertically through the body bolster 3, the sand bolster 2 and the axle 1 is a bolt 6 detachably secured in position by a cotter 7 or other suitable means.
At 8 is the body of my novel coupling. The said body 8 is cast or otherwise formed in. one piece and includes a base 9 arranged vertically against the rear sides of the axle l and sand bolster 2, a socket 10 that reaches rearwardly from the base 9, and is provided in its upper and lower walls with alined apertures 11 to receive the bolt 12 of reference designate the views of Specification of Letters Patent.
,by which reach 5, an upper I, THOMAS H. ELLINe-T Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
Serial No. 338,962.
the socket is connected to the forwardly reaching flange 13, interposed between the sand bolster 2 and the body bolster 3, and a lower forwardly reaching flange 14, disposed at the under side of the axle and receiving the lower portion of 13 and 14 extend forwardly beyond the forward sides of the axle 1 and sand bolster 2, and are connected together through the medium of bolts 15, disposed vertically in front of the axle and sand bolster, as illustrated.
It will be apparent from. the foregoing that my novel coupling is strongly held to the axle 1 and the sand bolster 2 in such manner as to take undue strain off the bolt 12, and that the application of the coupling does not entail any cutting or weakening of either axle or sand bolster. On the other hand it will be observed that my novel coupling is calculated to lend increased strength to the front portion of the gear and is also adapted to preclude sagging of the usual tongue or pole, (not shown) and the consequent imposition of the weight of the tongue or pole on draft animals.
Having described my invention, claim and desire ent, is:
The combination with the axle, sand bolster and body bolster of the running gear of a wagon, of a bolt extending downwardly through and pivotally connecting the axle and the said bolster to the body bolster, a reach coupling formed in one piece and. including a base abutting forwardly against the rear sides of the axle and sand bolster, a rearwardly directed socket with apertures in its lower and upper walls, and upper and lower apertured flanges reaching forwardly from the base the upper flange being interposed between the sand bolster and the body bolster and extended in front of the same, and the lower flange resting below the axle, and both flanges receiving the bolt and extending in front of the sand bolster and axle, and upright bolts arranged in front of the axle and sand bolster and connecting the lower and upper flanges of the coupling body to take strain off the bolt.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
THOMAS HENRY ELLINGTON,
what I to secure by Letters-Patthe bolt 6. The flanges'
