Be it known that I, FILIPPO SANTORO, a subject of the King of Italy, and resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kit- Cases, of which the following is a speoiiica tion. f

This invention relates to kit cases and particularly to a case andA equipment primarily designed for use by artists, whereby the said case may be converted into tables and one of the sections being designed as aV case for holding artists materials including an easel and a cushion.

An object of this inventionA is to provide novel means whereby sections of a case may be nested and held in such nested relation to each other as to simulate a suit case, the said sections embracingor incasing foldable legs which are adapted tobe extended to form tables or stools.

A further object of this invention) is to provide a collapsible easel which can be folded to occupy comparatively little space so that it may be carried in the case.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in thedetails of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the kit in its folded position;

In these drawings 10 denotes a section of the case and 11 another section thereof which ymay be held together with latches of suitable construction such as 12 and 13, which latches may be manipulated to lock the parts together or to release them.

The section 10 has a hinged cover 14 provided with braces 15, which braces are pivoted on studs 16 of the cover and have notches 17 to engage pins 18 on the interior of the section 10 so that the cover may be held open when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 6.

The cover 14 further constitutes a seat for a palette 19 which may be held therein `by buttons or clips 2O pivoted on studs 21 applied. to strips 22 preferably of wood applied to the interior of the cover at the ends.

The section 10 of the case may be divided into compartments such as 23 and 24 and others, the compartments being of any shape or configuration to suit the particular requirements but it is desirable that one compartment be made of a size to receive a cushion 25 and that another compartment be made of a size to accommodate the easel, whereas the other compartments may be of sizes to hold painters materials of different kinds.

What might be termedv the inner side of the section 10 or the side which coacts and fits in the section 11 has a cleat or strip 26 attached to it near one end and legs 27 are pivotally connected to the said cleat or strip 26 so that the legs may stand in the position shown in Fig. 6 or be swung to lie parallel with the inner surface of the section 10. Braces or props 28 are hingedly connected to plates 29 which are preferably countersunk in the edges of the ,legs and these braces have hooked ends 30 which engage studs 31 on the plates 32, which plates 32 are secured to the edge of the bottom of the said section l0. As the legs are duplicated on each end of the section l0, a description of those on one end and parts associated with them will suiiice as a description of those on the other end, the only difference being that the legs on the other end are hinged to the bottom of the section l0 instead of to a cleat or strip 26, it being understood that this provision permits the legs of one end to overlie those of theV other end. so that they will be properly nested when the parts are knocked down for packing.

The cover 14 may be held closed'by latches 32 operated by suitable keys which may be inserted in key holes 33, but as the details of construction of this feature are not material to a disclosure of the invention, further description isbelieved to be unnecessary eX- cept to say that the said latches 32 are intended to engage the plates 34 carried by the cover. Y

As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the device constituting the section 10 and the parts associated with it may be set up tol form a table, as shown in Fig. 7, or the cover may be raised to expose the interior thereof.

' The section l1 comprises a rectangular hollow body having relatively short legs, such as 35, one pair of which isy hinged at each end'and they are held in an .open vposition by braces or props 36, each of which is. pivot-,ally connected to the casingll and has hooks 37 engaging studs 38 on the plates 39 which latter are countersunk inthe edges of the legs so that when the .parts are extended or unfolded, the can be attached the position shown in ig."4 to be utilized as a stool to which the cushion 25 may be applied. K

The easel comprises in its construction a head 40 having apertures 41 and 42 for the reception of the upper ends of the legs 43 and 44 respectively, and the said head fuis thermore has apertures 45 for the reception of the leg 46 and another aperture 47 for the reception of the easel support 48, which easel support and leg 46 areV held in the head by the pin 49. The legs 43 and 44 are apertured and have pins 50 to support a drawing board or canvas and the support 44 may be adjusted. to any height to support drawing boards or canvases of different sizes, the said easel and its sections being demountable or detachable so that it can be packed in comparatively small space within the section 10- of the case.

One section yof the case may be provided with a handle 51 of suitable form, but Ido not wish to be limited with respect tothe form that .it shall take, and, therefore, I will not describe Ait in detail.

It is believed that the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be understood and appreciated from the foregoing description and a rsum of the operation of the device is believed unnecessary, except to say that vthe easel can be used in' connection with the stool shown in Fig. 4 when an artist desires. to sit while at work, whereas if he desires to stand, the legs of the easel may be'applied to the compartments of the section 10, theend legs being placed in the compartment at the front and the leg at the rear being placed in the compartment' at therear of the section. 10 so that the easelV will standV above the device shown in Fig.V 6 where it will be suiciently elevated to permit the artist to work while. standing, n
