To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I MARTIN NYSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Structures for the Operative Parts of Talking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 235,472, filed May 20, 1918.
The object of this invention is to provide a supporting structure to receive the motor, the tone arm and other movable parts of the operative mechanism of a talking machine so that the whole may be assembled and embodied as a unit in the talking machine cabinet.
A further object of the invention.- is to provide a strong and substantial supporting structure for the purpose indicated in which the movable parts are adapted to be readily mounted and maintained in their proper relation with each other.
'And a further object of the invention is arm and other movable parts associated with the motor of a talking machine by providing a supporting structure of novel form and configuration and with the parts thereof so disposed and arranged that the said movable parts may be easily and conveniently arranged therein in proper position for operation and at the same time in a position which permits of inspection whenever desired for adjustment, oiling or other purposes.

Referring to the drawings, the frame com prises twti end members 5 and 6, the member 5 having the two end feet 5" and the member 6 having the centrally disposed foot 6 which constitute a three-point support adapted to rest upon a plane surface during, the assembling of the parts. The member 5 communicates motion to the. spindle. Other lugs 13 project outwardly from the member 5 to support the governor shaft. The two members 5 and 6' are provided with alined bearings 14 for the shaft which supports the spring barrels and the gears 15 which are driven thereby. Ears 1 6 projecting outwardly from the member 5 are provided with openings to receive the brake rod and ears 17 projecting inwardly from the member 6' are provided with openingsto receive the winding shaft. The movable parts of what may be referred to generally as the motor mechanism and herein mentioned are disclosed in the aforesaid application and more particularly in a preferred form in my companion application Serial No. 317,885- filed concurrently herewith.
The .two end members of the frame are provided at the top with flat bed sections 18 whose upper surfaces lie in a horizontal plane to receive the top member 19 of the frame, and the several members are rigidly secured together by screws 20. This top an opening to receive the speed regulating,
device, and bosses 24; having threaded openings therein are disposed about the top I member.
The top plate 25 is fastened to the top members of the frame by screws 26 which engage the threaded openings in the bosses 2d. This top plate covers the frame and the parts supported thereby and it is of a proper size and shape to fit a corresponding opening in the top board of a talking machine cabinet in which it is suitably support ed. The top plate has an integral rear extension 27 provided with an opening to support the tone arm 28, also integral projections 29 at one side to form a protection for the operating handles of a brake mechanism and .a corner extension 30 toreceive the speed control device which is disclosed in a preferred form in my companion application Serial No. 317,882 filed concurrently herewith. 1
My invention provides a simple but effective means for conveniently and accurately assembling the mechanical operative parts with the cabinet to produce a modern talking machine. These mechanical parts are made in a machine shop and the cabinet is usually made of wood and produced in a woodworking plant. It has been customary to assemble the mechanical parts and the cabinet in an assembly room and to make the top plate of wood. If the mechanical parts are produced at a distance from the cabinet and the parts are shipped to a place of assembly, considerable difliculty is encountered in obtaining a proper fit and cooperation of the parts, and the work of as sembly has involved more or less fitting and adjusting and thereby increased the cost of production. My invention provides a means whereby all the mechanical operative parts may be assembled as a unit in a machine shop or in an assembly place where they can be properly adjusted and given a final test, and this unit may be transported to another place and embodied in a cabinet prepared for it without further test and with absolute assurance that the mechanism will work in the intended manner. This is of great importance in the commercial art because the cabinets and the operative parts are often made in difi erent places and have to be shipped to a place of assembly for completing the machines. The construction of the frame permits the operative parts to be assembled and tested in a convenient manner on a bench or table under the same conditions, to all intents and purposes, that would exist if these parts were assembled directly in the cabinet. The invention not only materially reduces the cost of assembly in the production of a talking machine but 'it enables the operative parts to be easily disconnected from the cabinet as a unit for inspection or replacement or for oiling or any other purpose.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of v the advantages of the invention, and I there fore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
I prefer to make the frame of metal in three parts, as herein described and I also prefer to make the top plate, which corresponds to the motor board in an ordinary machine, of pressed metal in a single part, but the material and number of parts may be changed as found desirable.
I claim:
1. A supporting structure for the mechanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame having two end members and a topmember fastened together, one of said end members having feet at its ends and the other end member having a single centrally disposed foot to support said frame in a horizontal position.
2. A supporting structure for the me chanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame having two end members and a top member fastened together, said top member having a lateral extension to support the speed adjusting device of the machine.
A supporting structure for the mechanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame having two end members and a top member fastened together, one of said end members having integral alined lugs projecting outwardly therefrom to support the driving shaft of the machine.
4. A supporting structure for the mechanicaloperative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame having two end members and a top member fastened together, one of said end members having integral alined lugs to support the spindle of the machine.
5. A supporting structure for the mechanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame having two end members and a top member fastened together, one of said end members having integral alined lugs to support the governor shaft of the machine.
6. A supporting structure for the mechanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame having two end members and a top member fastened together, one of said end members having integral alined lugs to support the spindle and the driving shaft of the machine and said top member having an opening therein to accommodate the spindle and to permit access to the driving shaft.
7. A supporting structure for the mechanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame having two end members provided with bed sections at the top thereof, a top member fastened to said bed sections, and feet on said end members to support the frame in a horizontal position.
8. A supporting structure for the mechanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame and a to? plate fastened to said frame, said top plate haw ing an integral rear extension tosu'pport the tone arm of the machine.
9. A supporting structure for the mechanical operative parts of a talking machine comprising a frame and a top plate I fastened to the frame, said top plate having integral therewith a rearward extension to support the tone arm, a corner extension to receive the speed controlling device, and slde 10 extensions to form guards for the brake levers.
