AUTOMATIC BRAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern.'
l Be it known that I, CARL U. NORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at #12 W illowdale Court, Montclair, county of Essex, Statev of New Jersey, and whose postolice address is the same, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic brakes and is especially applicable to hoist appa" ratus, but is by no means limited to use on that class of apparatus.
lt is an object of my invention to produce a brake which may be operated by hand and which may also operate automatically to set and release. Another object of my invention is to produce a brake meeting the above requirements, which shall be simple in construction, rigid in design and of easy operation.
My invention will be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanyingr drawings forming a part of thisspecilication, and in which Figure 1 shows a sectional elevation on line 1-1 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is a brake wheel around which is placed the usual brake band 2. The ends of the band 2 are fastened to a lever 3, pivoted at 4. The end 5v of the band 2 is directly connected to the lever 3, and the end 6 is indirectly1 connected to the lever 3 at the point 7 through the member 8. Connected with the member 8 is a link 9 pivotally connected to a link 10 at the point 11. The link 10 is keyed to a shaft 12, to which shaft is also rigidly connected a hand lever 13 by means of a set-screw 14 or any other suitable means. A suitable adjusting turn-buckle or other means 15 is connected in the band 2 for the purpose of adjustment as occasion requires.
The wheel V 1 as well as the drum 16 is secured to a shaft 17 by means of a key 18 or other suitable means, and this shaft 17 is suitably supported in journals, not shown. The apparatus described is supported and carried by a framework 19 of any suitable design. Mounted on one end of thelever 3 is a weight 20, the position of which may be varied as desired.` Stops 21 and 22 are provided preferably on the frame 19 for limiting the movement of the lever 3 around its pivot 4.
From the drawing, it will be noted that the distance between the points 4 and 5 is less than the distance between the points 4 and 7, that is to say, the end 5 of the brake band 2 is connected to the lever 3 at a point nearer the pivot point 4 of the lever 3 than the end 6 of the bands, which end is effectively connected to the lever 3 at the point 7. rThis means that when the lever 3 is rotated around its pivot 4 in a counter-clockwise direction the end 6 of the band 2 will move faster upward than theend 5 will move downward; therefore, the effect will be to release the band on the wheel 1, whereas when the lever 3 is rotated in the opposite direction, the opposite effect will result; namely that the band 2 will be set tighter on the wheel 1 as the lever 3 is rotated.
By reason of the connection of the band 2 at the point 6, and the pivotal connection of the member 8 to the lever 3 at the point 7, and the pivotal connectionv of the link 9 with the member 8, as well as the pivotal connection of the links 9 and 10 at the point 11, it will be seen that the lever 3 is per mitted to freely rotate around its pivot 4 even with the hand lever 13 set, as in Fig. 1,v without substantially changing the area inclosed by the band 2 and the lever' 3; that is without substantially changing the distance between the points 6 and 4. However, a rotation of the lever 3 counter-clockwise around its pivot has the effect of releasing the band 2 with relation to the wheel 1, so that the wheel and the drum may be freely rotated in the hoisting direction. This results from the fact that the two ends of the band 2 are connected an unequal distance from the pivot/point 4 of the lever 3. Fig.

When it is desired to Operate the wheel' 1 in the hoisting direction, and .that the brake should automatically set when the load has reached its destination, the hand lever 13 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1. This will cause the links 10 and 9 to move downwardly. Also the end of the member 8 which is connected to the link 9 will move downwardly. By reason 4of the lever 3 being against the stop 22 the point 7 is fixed; therefore, the member 8 will ro-4 tate in a clockwise direction around the point 7 as a pivot, which will have the effect of tightening the band 2 around the wheel 1 because of the movement of the point 6. When the wheel lis rotated in a counter-clockwise direction, the force in the band 2 which is created by the friction of the banden the wheel, will rotate the lever `3 around the pivot 4 in a counter-clockwise direction so as to bring the lever and the other parts into the position shown in Fig. 4. During this movement of the lever 3, the point 11 is fixed as well as lthe pivot point 4, which is always fixed. This will cause the point 7 to move slightly in a counter-clockwise direction with respect to point 4, and the point 6 to move slightly in a clockwise direction with respect to the point 7 5 the member 8 to move slightly clockwise around the point of connection between the link 9 and the member 8; andthe link 9 to move slightly in a clockwise direction around the point 11. This will leave the points 6 and 7 substantially in the same relation as before with respect to point 4, and
, in view of the fact that there is a greater distance between the points 4 and 7 than between the points 4 and 5, the result will be that the band 2 will be released, so that the wheel may rotate in a counter-clockwise direction vwithout anv substantial braking effect. When the load has reached its destination and the hoisting power is shut off, the load will cause the wheel l to tend to rotate in a clockwise direction. This tendency acting through the friction of theband 2 with ythe wheel 1, will cause the lever 3 to rotate in a clockwise direction and to assume the position shown in Fig. 1. The movement to this position is the reverse to that previously described, the net result of which is an automatic setting of the brake which elfectivelvl holds the wheel 1 against clockwise rotation. I/Vhen it is desired to release the brake and lower the load, this may be accomplished by moving the hand lever 13 to the right, which will lengthen the distance between the points 6 and 4, thereby manually releasing the-band 2 from the wheel 1 which will permit the wheel to rotatev until the brake is again manually set by moving the lever 13 to the left. The

It is obvious'that the other parts may be changed in detail without departing from the spirit of my invention or without changing its operation or effectiveness in any manner. It will be Vnoted from the construction that the parts connecting the points 4 and 11 are in effect a toggle, which, however, is never moved to the locking position; neither does the line of force exerted by the band 2 on the point 6 ever pass to the left of the relative pivot point 7, which if it did, would have the effect of a locked toggle. The lever 13 may be held in the desired position by any suitable and well known arrangement.
IIaving described my invention, what VI claim new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an automatic brake, the combination of a brake wheel, abrake band therearound, a member connected to the ends of said band and pivoted an unequal distance from the ends of the band and adapted to automatically apply and release said brake,
and means operable without shifting saidl member for mechanically changing the tension of the band around the wheel.
2. In a brake, the combination of a brake wheel, a brake band around the wheel, a pivoted lever to which one end of4 said band is directly connected, and means connecting the other end of the band to said lever indirectly so as to permit free rotation of said lever around its pivot to automatically apply and release the brake and to permit operation of said brake without moving said lever.
3. 'In a brake, the combination of a brake wheel, a brake band around the wheel, a pivoted lever to which one end of said band is directly connected onV one side of the pivotal axis of the lever, means connecting the other end of the bandto said lever so as to permit free rotation of said lever on the other side of the pivotal axis thereof around its pivot but without changing the relation of the band to the lever, and means limiting the movements of said pivoted lever.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a brakewheel, a brake band therefor, a pivoted lever to which one end of said band is directly connected, a
hand lever for manually operating said brake, and means connecting said hand lever, said band and said pivoted lever, said means permitting control of the brake band by said hand lever Without shifting said pivoted lever, and means limiting the movement of said pivoted lever.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a brake Wheel, a brake band therefor7 a pivoted lever to Which one end of said band is directly connected, a hand lever for manually operating said brake, means connecting said hand lever, said band and said pivoted lever, said means permitting control of the brake band by said hand lever Without shifting said pivoted lever, and means limiting the move ment of said pivoted lever.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a brake Wheel, a band therefor, a pivoted lever to Which one end of said band is directly connected, a hand lever for manually setting and releasing said brake, means connecting said hand lever, band and pivoted lever together so as to permit said pivoted'lever to rotate on its pivotal point Without substantially changing the area inclosed by said band and lever, said means permitting` control of the brake band by said hand lever Without shifting said pivoted lever.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a brake Wheel, a band therefor, a pivoted lever to which one end of said band is directly connected and to which the other end is indirectly connected at a greater distance from the pivot than the first mentioned end, means connecting said band to said pivotal lever and a hand lever pivotally connected to said last means and about Which point of connection as a pivot said last means rotates when said pivoted lever rotates around its pivot.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a brake Wheel, a band therefor, a pivoted lever to Which one end of said band is directly connected and to which the other end is indirectly connected at a greater distance from the pivot than the first mentioned end, means connecting said band to said pivotal lever, a hand lever pivotally connected to said last means and about which point of connection as a pivot said last means rotates when said pivoted lever rotates around its pivot, and means limiting the movementsI of said pivoted lever.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a brake Wheel, a band therefor, a pivoted lever to which both ends or said band are connected, one directly and the other indirectly and at unequal distances from the pivotal point of said lever, a link connecting one end of said band with said lever, a hand lever adapted to be set in fixed positions, and a pivoted link connecting said hand lever to said band whereby said rst link moves around the pivotal point of the second link When said pivoted lever rotates on its pivot thereby maintaining the band in substantially fixed relation to said pivoted lever.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination of a Wheel, a band therefor, a pivoted lever to Which one end of said band is directly connected, means connecting the other end of said band to said lever, a hand lever for holding said means in predetermined positions, and means pivoted to said hand lever and to said first means for permitting said pivoted lever to rotate about its pivot when the hand lever is set.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a Wheel, a band therefor, a pivoted lever to which one end of said band is directly connected, means connectin the other end of said band to said lever, a and lever for holding said means in predetermined positions, means pivoted to said hand lever and to said first means forpermitting said pivoted lever to rotate about its pivot when the hand lever is set, and means limit ing the movements of said pivoted lever.
12. In a brake, the combination of a brake Wheel a brake band around said Wheel, a pivoted lever to Which one end of said band is directly connected, means connecting the other end of said band to said lever indirectly whereby when vsaid Wheel rotates in one direction said band will automatically release said Wheel and When said Wheel tends to move in the opposite direction said band Will bind and hold said Wheel against substantial rotation in that direction.
