Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. KIDDER AND GILBERT E. HOOD, OE LAWRENCE, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN INKSTANDS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,070, dated Fehmary 18, 18?'3.
have invented a certain new and useful Im.
provement in Inkstands; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawing.
This invention consists of an ink-well ar ranged and constructed as hereinafter described, to be adjusted for exposing or inclosing the ink, according as may be desired.
111 the accompanying plate of drawing, our
improvement in inkstands -is illustrated, Fig` ures 1 and 2 being vertical sections in directions transversely to oneanother.
A in the drawing represents an inkwell made, in-the present' instance, of a rectanguv lar-box shape; but it may be of other shapes.
The well A is between the two uprights B B of a stand, C, and is hung upon a transverse pin, a, to` be tilted thereon as a center, resting in the limit of the tilt in either direction upon the -bottom rail D ot' the stand B; E, a spout located at one end of the ink-well and passing 'downward `by inclined partitions f f2 into the ink-well to the bottom plate f/ of the same. The inner partition f has atriangular-shaped open'- ing, g2, leading into the body of the ink-well, and to this opening g2 a flapvalve or plate, F, is hung, as shown, for closing and opening the same. This nap-valve F is'free t0 swing in the tilting ot' the ink-well A, and, tipping the well A to bring its spout end down, the nap-valve swings from the partitionfon to the partition f2, thus opening the opening g2, andtipping the well to bring its opposite end down theapvalve swings back to the partition fand closes the opening g2.
To lill the ink-well A,.tip it so as to bring its spout uppermost, when pour in the ink until sufficiently filled. Now, if the ink-well be tipped t0 bring its spout down the ink will flow up into said spout for being used, the pressure of the external atinosphereholdin g it'from overflowing.
The ink-well A is provided with the spout E, constructed with the double inclined bottom H, when, iffset upon its inclined face I, the ink will run to the spout, and upon its inclined face J away from the spout into the ink-well, the Hap-valve F closing and opening as before. This double-inclined bottom dispenses with the necessity of arranging the ink-Well to be tilted.
By an arrangement and construction of inkwell substantiallyT as herein described it is obvious many advantages arev secured, among themthe following: After using the ink-well,
, by then simply tipping the well back, the ink is run back into the ink-Well and there shut from the atmosphere 5 when the ink-well is in use only a small portion of it is exposed.
Having thus described our invention, we shall state our claim as follows:
An ink-.well having its base or. bottom H made with the two inclined faces I J, and oth- `erwise constructed substantially as described,
for the purpose set forth.
The above specilication of our improvement in inkstands signed by us this 30th day of May, A. D. 1872.
p JAMES H. KIDDER.
