SIDE BEARING.
To all 'Lo/tom at may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCONNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. y K
This invention relates -to improvements in side'bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a side bearing more particularly adapted for railway cars and whereinthe bearing is of simple, efcient and relatively inexpensiveconstruction and so arranged as to constantly shift the points ofcontact of the anti-friction element.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view taken through the end portions of a body and a truck bolster of a car showing my improvements in connection therewith. In said drawings, 10 denotes the upper section of a truckbolster and 11 the under section of an opposed body bolster. The improved side bearing is preferably secured to the under side of the body bolster and, as shown, comprises broadly, a housing A, anti-friction roller B, lloating trunnions or disks C-C, flexible axle D, and upper striking plate E. i Y
The housing A is of hollow, substantially box Vform open at its top and bottom and having end walls 12-12 and side walls 13-13. Gn its interior near the upper part thereof, the housing is provided with inwardly projecting shoulders 1st-14 arranged to clamp the striking plate E in position against the bolster. Y Said plate E is preferably provided with a steel insert, as indicated at 16, to better resist wear. The housing A is secured to the bolster by rivets or other suitable means extending throughv suitable lugs formed integrally with the housing.

The.. disks C+C are centrally apertured as indicated at 21, in which apertures are received the ends of the flexible axle or journal D, the latter comprising a coil spring, as clearly indicated 'in the drawing. The disks C-C are adapted to travel along' oppositely and upwardly inclined tracks 22-22 formed on the inner faces of the side Walls 13 and outside of the horizontal portions 20 of the flanges on which end as indicated at Vare adapted to ride said anges 19.
The operation is as follows: The roller is normally slightly spaced from the upper striking plate and of course is spaced the usual distance from the opposite bolster. When the side bearing comes into operation, and assuming that the upper bolster remains stationary and the lower bolster nioves to the right, as viewed in F ig.y 1 the roller B will be moved or rolled to the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. During this rolling movement, it is evident that the disks C-C will travel towardthe Vend of the housing in accordance with the movement of the roller but in this movement the disks C-C will roll up the inclined tracks 22. This action is permitted on account of the flexible journal D. When the pressure from the truck bolster is removed at the end of the actuation, it is evident that the weight of the roller will be carried by the disks C-C and the latter will roll down the inclined tracks until central normal position is reached, carrying the roller B therewith. Not only does this insure the'return of the roller to central position after each actuation, but it will be noted that the roller while being actuated, rolls on a curved surface having the radius of the roller B and consequently the roller will rotate through a relatively small arc. During the return movement, however, the disks being of smaller diameter will require a rotating movement through a greater arc in order to return the same distance so that the roller B, during the return movement will be rotated through a greater arc than during the actuating movement.
