1 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES E. RoMre, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Roslyn, county of Montgomery, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved container which is particularly adapted for use as a barrel and which can be easily put together and taken apart without the use of nails, screws or similar de vices.
Another object is to make my improved container in such manner that it will be strong and durable and can be easily and 7 cheaply manufactured.
- A further object is to so construct my improved container that it can be .used as a knockdown container for shipping purposes.
These objects, and other advantageous V ends which will be described hereinafter, I
attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in 1 the line 33 of Fig.2,
Fig. 1 is a sectional perspective view show- I ing a modified form of certain of the parts of my improved container, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional perspective view showing another modification of my invention.
Referring to the drawlngs and particu- V larly to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, my improved container includes a, base section 6 made in the formof a continuous ring which may be constructed of stamped or pressed sheet metal; the same including an integral base plate 7 having a flange 8 which includes a depending portion 9 and an upwardly extending portion 10 which surrounds the portion 9 so as to provide an annular groove 11 having a part projecting below the base plate 7 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. In, other words the flange 8 is substantially Ueshape in cross section and a part 12 of the outer portion 10 projects above the top of the base plate 7. A top ring section 13 is also provided and is preferably made of pressed or stamped sheet metal and includes an inwardly depending flange 14: in the form of an inner bandand an outwardlydepending integral flange l5'which is spaced from the flange let to provide a groove 16 which is closed at its top by the portion 17 which connects the flange 141 with theflange15. In other words, the top ring section 13 includes the upwardly extending annular groove 16 which is opposed to the groove 11 of the base section 6. The lower part of the flange 1 1 has an inwardly bent portion 18 which provides a ledge which extends circularly to form an opening 19.
Staves or slats 20, which may be made of wood, are arranged in annular formation and have their lower ends snugly fitting within the groove 11 and their upper ends snugly fitting within the groove 16. The upwardly extending portion 10 of the flange 8 has loops 21 formed therein preferably by cutting the metal and bowing the parts between the cuts as clearly shown in 1. These loops or eyelets 21 are spaced preferably at equal distances apart and in the present instance I have illustrated four of these loops within the circumference of the flange. In similar manner the outer flange 15 of the top ring section 13 has loops or eyelets 22 formed therein which are preferably arranged to be disposed directly above the intervening spaces between the loops 21 of the base section flange portion 10. A single length of wire 23 is laced in zig-zag manner through the eyelets 21 and 22 so that the strands of the wire alternate between the base section and the top ring section. The ends-of the length of wire 23 maybe twisted together as shown at 24 so as to secure the parts together. A circular cover plate 25 has a depending flange 26 which is adapted to fit within the space provided by the flange 14: of the top ring section 13 and the lower edge of said plate 26 is adapted to rest upon the ledge 18; the construction preferably being such that the top surface 27 'of the cover plate 25 is flush with the top 17 of the'ring section 13. The cover plate 25 has loops 28 which are preferably formed by cutting and pressing the vmetal thereof upwardly and these loops form eyelets to permit another.

the eyelets22 and 28 are produced by cutting and bending integral cars from the parts; said ears including holes31 through which the wires may be laced. In all other respects the construction is similar to that described. inconnection with Figs. 1 to 3 and I have therefore given similar parts corresponding reference numerals.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a construction similar to that described in connection with Figs. 1 to 3 inclusivewith the exception that instead of providing the top cover plate with a depending flange fitting within the, space provided by the flange 1 1, the top cover plate 25 .rests directly on the top 17 of the ring section '13. In all other respects the construction of Fig. 5 to that described in connection with Figs. 1 to 3 and I havetherefore given similar parts corresponding referencenumerals.
' By making a container as above described the base and top sections can be quickly and cheaply manufactured and the staves can be inserted first in the groove 11 and then the top ring section can be placed over the annularlyarranged top ends of the staves so as to fit within the groove 16. As. previ- "ously' stated the staves are adapted to fit snugly within said grooves so that a firm and strong constructionwill be provided and when the. wire 33 is laced as described 1 and the ends twisted together, an extremely strong structure will be provided. The container can thenbe filled and the top cover plate applied and laced and when thus secured together the container can be shipped great distances and roughly handled without the several parts becoming loose or in anyway displaced. If desired the several sections .can be taken apart and storedin a comparatively small space such for example as when desired for use for cargo shipment in one direction andin which the empty containers must be returned.
