Be it known that I, HARRY H. HARNS- BERGER a citizen of the United States, residing at l3rooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette- Holders, of which the following is a specificat1on.-
This invention relates to articles generically known as cigar or cigarette holders, and it has for its object to provide the holder with relatively inexpensive, compact, easily operated and eflicient deviceswhereby the spent end or so-called stump of the cigar or cigarette .may be conveniently ejected from the holder. A further object of the invention is to adapt the ejecting devices to inexpensive application to holders of the s1ze, shape and material now in general and public use, without defacing them. or materlally adding to their bulk or shape. Ad ditional advantages and utilities of the invention'will appear from the detailed description below. a

1 represents the body-of the holder. It may be made of ordinary constructionand of any suitable material. .It is provided with a central longitudinal bore or draft passage 2, which connects at its forward end the recess 4 with the recess 3. The ejector comprises the following parts, see best Fig; 3. 6- is a itifl' rod, preferably ofmetal, which is adapted to slide longitudinally through the bore 5. plate 9, 'stud 11 on the plate with which the push recess or chamber 4 and projects forwardly into the inner end of the recess 3. The forward end of this rod is turned downwardly at substantially right angles and bent into substantially circular form to eye 7 to act as a push platefor the ejection of the cigar or cigarette stump. The eye, having an opening in its center part, will not interfere with the draft during the smoking operation. The inner end of the rod 6, as shown in Fig. 1, may be turned upwardly, as at 8,a.nd passed through and riveted, or be otherwise attached, to a sliding plate 9, which acts as a cover plate for the recess 4' and as a push plate, whereby the ejector ma be projected and retracted. The upper sur ace of this plate may beneficially be roughened or knurled to aid in these operations.
10 is a spring, which encircling the ejector rod 6, abuts at one end against-the forward end of the recess 4 and at the other end against any suitable abutment on the rod 6, as, for example, the rectangular portion 8 of that rod. The function of the spring is to retract the ejector 6 when released from the forward pressure of the thumb of the operator, thus returning the parts to normal or primary position.
Inasmuch as this automatic spring action, while agponvenience, is not at all essential, and in some instances mi ht be found objectionableQI illustrate in ig. 2a modified 'form of the invention, in which the spring has been eliminated, and in this construction also I modify the other parts as. follows:
Instead of the ejector rod 6 bein bent at right angles for connection with t e cover provide a downwardly extending rod 6 en ages. 'This en agement may be by threa ing the rod to t e stud,'as shown in Fig. 2, or by splitting the lug as shown in Fig. 5, thus forming upon it two resilient prongs orv parts 12, 12, between which the end of the push'rod 6 may be forced by pressure, so that the pinch of the resilient parts 12, 12, will'hold the push rod in po-. sition. In this construction also I show a further modification, that is to say, in-- stead of bending the forward end of the ejector rod within the cigar or cigarette holding recess 3 at right angles and forming it into an eye or loop, I may flatten the end of thatrod, as by the stroke of a ham-- produce an a mar, and then bend the flattened orplatelike part at right angles, as shown in F1 3, and in the center of this flattened part punch an opening 13, through which the draft may pass to the draft bore 2, as indicated.
The operation is as follows: The appropriate end of the cigar or cigarette is inserted into the recess 3 in its forward end in the usual manner, and being lighted the smoking proceeds until the cigar or cigarette has been consumed, or it is otherwise desired to eject the stump or partly con.- sumed article, whereupon the ejector or .cover plate 9 is thumb of the operator which will carry the looped or flattened end of the ejector against the inner end of the cigar or cigarette stump, and slight pressure being applied, the same will be ejected from the recess 3, whereupon the operator discontinuingthe forward pressure of his thumb, the'spring 10, if present, will automatically cause the retraction of the ejector and of the cover plate 9 but if the spring be not employed, then the mere backward movement of the operators thumb will effect the same movements of these parts, thus returning the holder to primary condition, ready for a second use.
It will be noted that the cover plate 9 is of such length and width as that it may entirely cover and hide the recess 4, thus preventing the entrance of dirt or other matter and presenting a smooth, handsome appearance, rather ornamental than otherwise, upon the exterior of the holder. It will be further noted that inasmuch as when the ejector is projected, its forward end extends beyond the holder proper, as illustrated in dotted lines on Figs. 1 and 2, that it will be easy by the employment of suitable tools, either to thread the ejector rod 6 into the lug 11, or other appropriate part of the cover plate, or to otherwise effect suitable engagement between these parts.
It will be obvious to those who are familiar with such matters that various modifications may be made in the details of 'construction without departing from the essentials of the invention. I therefore do not limit' myself to the details described and illustrated.
I claim:
1. A holder having in addition to an intepushed forwardly by the gral body part provided with a longitudinally extending draft passage and enlarged recess at its forward end, the following additional devices: an elongated cavity in one side of the body .part parallel to the draft passage, a channel connecting the forward end of the cavity with the rearward end of the enlarged recess, and an ejector rod movably extending through said channel and operable from the outside of the holder through said cavity and having its forward end formed into a perforated ejector plate or part. i V

A holder having in addition to an integral body part provided with a longitudinally extending draft passage and enlarged recess at its forward'end, the following additional devices: an elongated cavity in one side of the body part parallel to the draft passage, a channel connecting the forward end of the cavity with the rearward end of the enlarged recess, a longitudinally m0va-.
ble cover plate-for the cavity, an ejector rod movably extending through said channel and attached to the cover plate within said cavity and'having its forward end formed into a perforated ejector plate or part, and a retractile spring within said cavity adapte ed to automatically return the parts to their primary position.
3. A" holder having in addition to an integral body part providedwith a longitudinallyextending draft passage'and enlargedrecess at its forward end, the following additional devices: an elongated cavity in oneside of the body part parallel to the draft passage, a channel connecting the forward end of the cavity with the rearward end of the enlarged recess, a longitudinally movable cover plate for the cavity of such length and width as to cover the same in all positions of the ejector, and an ejector rod movably extending through said channel and attached to the cover plate within said cavity and having its forward end formed into a perforated ejector plate or part.-
