AUTO-SIGNAL.
i Application filed July 8,
To allwhomz'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, Bours ANosoHENKo, a citizen of Russia, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auto-Signals, of which the following is a speCiCatiOn.
This invention relates to signal apparatus and it has more particular reference to devices ofthe foregoing nature such as are applicable for use on automobiles and the like, and which simulate the action of the hand when extended at arms length to give an indication to following traflic and pedestrians that the vehicle is about to make a turn or take a curve.
The main object of this invention is to provide a novel form of signal apparatus of the type referred to which is automatically operated whenever the driver changes speed, applies the brakes or commencesto take a curve. y Y
A further Vobject of my invention. is to furnish a signal apparatus more especially for use on automobiles in which the signal giving element or semaphore approximates Ain its movement to effective position the natural throw of the human arm and hand.
Another object of this invention is to provide a signal apparatus for automobiles which is equally effective when employed either by day or at night. i
A still further Vobject of the invention is the provision of-a signal apparatus for automobiles which is simple in construction, readily and easily'V installed, neatV andY attractive in appearance, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, cheap to manufacture and mostimportant of all is automatic in action under all conditions when once set up and adjusted.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consistsy essentially in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, aswill be hereinafter fully described and more specifically pointed out by the appended claims.
In the further'disclosure ofthe invention reference isto be had to the accompanying Vsheets of explanatory drawings, consituting -a Vpart of this specification, in .which like characters of reference denote thesame or similar parts in all the views; and in which l j Y, f Figure 1- is a perspective View of a por- Speccation of Letters Patent..

. tion of the fore part of anv automobile having my improved signal apparatus fitted thereto.
Fig. 2--f isr an end elevation of my improved signal apparatus in collapsed position, parts being broken away or in section for the sake of cleahness.
Fig. 3-' is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3, in Fig.2, Vand looking 'in the direction'of the arrows.` I V Fig. 4ris a vertical section taken on'the line 4-4 in Fig. 2, and looking inthe Vdirection of the arrows.
Fig. 5- is a face view of the signal apparatus in extended position.V
Fig. 6- is a plan of the' same. ,y
Fig.7 is an enlarged detail of one of screen supporting members hereinafter more particularly` described.
' Fig. 8- is an enlarged detail of a washer element, and, Y
Fig. 9- is an .enlarged detail rof a guiding eye forv attachment to the steering post. l
Referring more'particularly to the views, the numeral 10, designates a fragmentary portion of an automobile, 11 the windshield, 13, the clutch lever, 14 the ordinary Vor service brake, 15, the Vemergency brake,
NT oFF1cE.-
i716 the gear shift and 17, the steering wheel.
lMy improved signal apparatus is designated in its entirety by the letter A` and it is arranged to be operated as hereinafter fully described by'vmeans of a cable 18,- which passes around guide rollers or pulleys 19, 19 arranged wherevdesired, vand'is connected to the clutch lever 13. A'branch The free' end of the cable 18, islead to and v passed once completely around 'a grooved pulley 211 and is secured at 24 firmly thereto. The pulley 24, is keyed or otherwise secured on aV shaft 25, freely revoluble in appropriate bearings horizontally of the ` standards 26, 26. Secured at one end in a hole 27, at right angles to the axis' of the vlower end, whereof it passesV into and is` Vsecured in a conicallylshaped stop plate or Ymovablemeinber'32.
. shaft 25, is a cord or cable 28, `which passes through a hole in the bracket 29, beneath which is seated anV inverted somewhat coni.-
cally shaped sleeve 30, and thence axially of a strong compression spring 31, at the Secured to one face of the hul"*i24,are apairgof spacedplates 33, between ,which andfsaid'pulley 24, are journaled rollers 34, 35, the'fformer ofV which has frolling' contact with a cam 36, and the latter' with a cam 37, integral,V with 'or securely mounted in theV bores whereof are soldered 'or firmly Y fixed the ends43,-F ig. ft2-of somewhat U- shapedbent wires' 44, which serve as a support forthefiexibl'e band 45 that Vconstitutes the body portion of the signal Vproper andV .simulates in appearance an extended human arm and Vhand 46. The othery orV opposed arm 47 ofthe lazy-tongs Vsystem of levers 41, isfreely rotatable on a liiredfshaft V48, and the outer or free ends ofthe systemv areV 'connected together at; 49, where Vthere is attacheda suitable socket 5,0,lfor an electric `incandescent Y lam"p"5.1, the wires whereof arefinclosed in a cable 52, which is threaded throughV the aforesaidhollowpivots 42, andA` connects `with a'make and brea-l-z device 53.
flphismalregrand brealr device may' conven- Y iently consistof a lever 54, to one end where# .-ofis attached ,at 55, the end of the cable l52, whichis threaded throughV the aforesaid central'pivots 42, andthe. end pivot 42a .of the, laZy-tongs'system of levers 41, while V,the other Yend thereof constitutes a cranked part l56,1and'sai'd lever 54 is pivoted at 57. Y
'lhe end-of the crankedpart, is arranged Yto cloperate with the endV 58, ofthellazytongs system-,4,1 whenthe device 'is Vclosed.
up or., out of use-as shown clearly in Eig. 4+so that the circuit tothe lainp 51,
is'brolren, acontractile spring 59, serving to closethe circuit or bring'thecontacts GO,
.61, into. engagement when the signal is moved to signaling position.. lt will of course be readily understood that a pushV button or Vswitch not shown, is fitted in'V connection with the electric circuitvyto `the Y apparatus-.or contact 61'for example-to cut-ofi" the current tothe lamp 51, during daylight, and that any'other appropriate makeV and break device may beemployed and actuated by the lazy tongs system 41.
In useV it will be readilyseen'that Ywhen the clutch lever 13, is depressed a pull will be exerted on the cable 18, which will cause the pulley 24 to be rotated thereby winding y the `cord 28, about the shaft 25 in opnosi tion tothe spring 31.v Similarly when the steering wheel 17 is rotated a pull will be exerted on the cable 18 by said cable winding around the steering post 21;or, when Vthe'emergency brake 15 is operated alike action will take place. The rotation of the pulley 24 and with it the shaft 25, swings the plates 33 and roller 34, which swings `the cam 36 in the" direction ofthe arrow i,
in-l ig. 3, which causesV the shaft 38Vtobe turned and thereby swinging the leverv 39 and thus causing Vthe lazy-tongs system of levers 41 to Vbe projected outwardly'in an arcuate manner while atthe'saine timethey will be expandedand stretch the flexiblel band 45fto'the position shown in Fig. 5, with the terminal handy end 63'eirtcnded horizontally.y Gencurrent with the foregd ing operationthecircuit will be closed to Vthe lamp`51land a visible indication given'V Y whenfthemapparatus is'used afterjdarlr. l
' TVrhen the roller 35 has'moved to the position directly below the'axis'ofthe shaft 35,
Un releasing the pressure on theV clutch lever 13, or reversing the action of the steerinoF Y apparatus will be returned to their normal position bythe action of the spring 31, and the roller 34, Ymoving thel cam 36 Vdownwardly which results in Vthe Vreturn'ofv the signal into'its casing or box 64 and the shutoff ofthe light. I
.From the foregoing'descri tion it will be Vapparent tofthose skilled 1in t ie art to which this inventionappertains that by providing' Y a bracketw65, adaptedto support the entire device on'one or both'of theside posts 12,
V wheel 17, the .extended parts of thesignail of. an automobile *shield that l provide a. Y
very simple and attractive apparatus for thepurposes specifiedand while there has Y beendescribed 'and illustratedlone conven-VV 'ient embodiment thereof, I' wish to reserve the rightgto make such changesV and modifications as will'be necessary to Aadapt the'invention to different types of self propelled vehicles, Vthese .changes and Vother modificationsv however being limited by the 'spirit and scope. ofthe appended claims.
