Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Application filed February 12, 1920. Serial No. 358,068.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. GOLD- sMrrH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Campbell, in the county of Dunklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Poultry- Nests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination hens nest and brooder, and has forits object to provide an automatic nest for the protection of the hen while laying or setting. And further to provide an automatic nest for weeding out non-producing from the producing` fowl, and determining the hen which laid the specific eggs, and for indicating when the hen is on the nest. And further to provide an automatic nest which may be used for a summer brooder.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention with the parts in the normal position.
Fig. 2 is a. section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view showing the door in the lowered or open position.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail section showing the spring for locking the entrance door in the open position.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming, part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates a casing having openings 2 in the side and ends, which said openings may be of any desired size, and the said casing 1 may be.constructed of wood, metal or other suitable material. In one side of the said casing near one end thereof is an opening 3 provided with a vertically slidable door 4, said door being connected by an arm 5 to the nest 6 by means of the pin 7 passing through the aperture 8 in the side of the casing 1, said arm 5 being pivoted at 9 to the outer surface of the said casing l. The nest 6 is provided with a platform 10 at one end, adjacent the opening` 3, and is pivoted at 11 to the inner surface of the casing 1. A. latch 12 is pivoted to the outer surface of the .by a spring 15.
c casing 1 at 13 and has a notch 14 in one side adapted to taire over the pin 7 to hold the door 4 in the closed position, the said latch 12 being held normally against the pin 7 A hook 16 is also pivoted to the outer surface of the casing 1 and is adapted to it over the upper end of the latch 12 to hold it out of engagement with the pin 7, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
spring wire catch 17 has one end secured to the side of the casing 1 andits upper end vprojecting back of the wire piece 18 which is also secured to the side of the casing 1. This catch 17 projects over the arm 5 and .locks the door in the open position when the catch 17 is at the outer end of the wire 18, and when forced back into the wire 18 will release the arm 5 and allow the door 4 to be raised and lowered. Then the hen enters the opening 3 she will step upon the platform 10 and then down into the nest 6 causing the latter to tilt on the pivots 1l which results in the arm 5 being tilted on the pivot 9 and the door 4 raised closing the opening 3, in which position it is locked by the latch 12 engaging the pin 7. One end of the nest 6 is provided with a brush 19 which engages the brush 20 on the inner surface of the casing 1 for an instant as the nest is tilted causing the bell 21 to ring. The said brushes 19 and 2O are connected by the wire 22 to the battery 23. In the end of the casing 1 back of the nest 6 is a door 24 which may be opened to allow the hen to pass out of the nest when the door at the side is closed or locked. Just back of the door 24 is a rod 25 having one end hinged at 26 and its opposite end projecting into a groove 27. The end of the rod 25 which projects into the groove 27 is provided with a cord or belt 28 which passes over the pulleys 29 and 30 and has its opposite end secured to the upper end of the latch 12 so that when the hen steps on said rod 25 its weight will cause the said rod to be forced down and the latch 12 to release the pin 7, thereby allowing the arm 5 to tilt on the pivot 9 and the door 4' lOO fore described, and the door 4 locked over Y the said opening.
It will be seen that by having the door 24 at the rear the hens enter the opening 3 and after laying pass out through the door 2 4 and as they do so again open the door 4 allowing another hen to enter through the opening. 3 to the nest. The hens passing through the door 24 may enter another yard or coop, thus separating the productive from the non-productive hens.
Alterations in the construction and ai'- rangement ofthe parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my present invention.
l Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A combined hens nest, and brooder, comprising a casing having an Opening in the side thereof near one end and a opening in one end thereof, a door slidable over the said side opening, a nest pivoted within said casing, an arm connecting the rear end of .saidnest with the said door, a latch pivoted to the said casing and adapted to cooperate with the said arm to hold the door in the closed position, a rod near the lower end of the end opening of said casing, and means connecting the said rod and latch for releasing the latter to allow the side door to be lowered.
2. A combined hens nest, and broeder, comprising a casing having an opening Vin one side near the one end thereof and an opening in one end, a door slidable over said Vside opening, an arm pivoted to the side of said casing and connected to the saidY side door and nest, a latch cooperating with the said arm to hold the dool` in the closed position, a spring to hold the said latch normally against saidarm, a rod extending across the said end opening, means connecting the said rod and latchr for disconnecting the said latch and arm to allow the side door to be opened, and means to lock the said sidel door in the open position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
