T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Goncrz, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Virel-ope-Guy Securing and Releasing Means, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a means for securing a wire guy rope line to its anchorage, the grip on the end of the rope being effected by the tension imposed on the line.
These wire rope guys for spar poles or the like require to be drawn tight by power from the donkey engine, and when tightened must be securely fastened against slip in a manner that can be quickly applied. The securing means should also be capable of quick release without endangering the life or limb of the'operator.
These objects are obtained in the device, which is the subject of this application, by providing a clamp through which the rope may be freely drawn'by power and which, when the required tension is imposed, may be promptly clamped on the wire rope, the tension of the rope providing the clamping pressure.
The device is further provided with a release hook connecting the guy rope to its anchorage, which hook may be quickly rel ased without injury to the rope.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied,
- in which Figure 1 shows in side elevation the clamp and release hook as applied between the guy rope and its anchorage.

The clamping device comprises a double plate frame of steel or the like formed in a right angled bend 2, 3. To the end of the vertical portion 2 of this frame a shackle 4: is connected between the two sides of the frame which are spread apart sufficiently V to permit of such insertion.
To the other end 3 a aw member 5, forming half of the wire rope clamp, is secured and to thehorizontal portion 3 of the frame intermediate the jaw member 5 and the bend is pivotally mounted at 7 the frame 6, to the free end of which is secured the other movable jaw 10 of the wire clamp.
This frame 6 is adjacent the pivot 7 substantially parallel to the other member 2 of the frame and is then turned forward and down to meet its opposed jaw member 5.
As in the case of 2, 3, it is of double plate and is pivoted outside of 3. Between the sides of 6 a Wire rope sheave 8 is mounted on a pin 9 at the bend of the frame, around which sheave the wire guy rope 11 is passed from the upper side and the end is passed from the underside through between the aws 5 and 10 to be secured by them. The right angled bend of the frame 2, 3, is strongly stayed by a flat truss bar 12 secured on each side frame across the angled bend.
The two jaw members 5 and 10 between which the end of the wire rope 11 is clamped are convexly and concavely curved, as at 13, in order to obtain a more effective hold of the wire rope against slip. The lower jaw member 5 has mounted intermediate of its length a pin 14 which carries on each side an eccentric cam plate 15, the edges of which plates bear on each side against the concave curvature of the sides of the upper jaw member 10. These eccentric plates 15 have provision by means of which they may be partially rotated, so that the eccentricity of the plates 15 may hold apart the jaw members 5 andlO, or may force them apart from the closed position.
To the shackle 4 of this wire rope clamp 1s connected a release hook 16, which is pivotally mounted at 17 between side plates 18, between the other ends of which the shackle 19 is connected on a pin 20. The sides of this frame 18 are spaced apart to permit passage of the shank of the hook 16 between them. Beyond the point of the hook the end of the shank is turned toward that side,

member 23 is turned over, as shown in Fig. 1, a safety pin or bolt is passed through an aperture 22 in the lock member and in the shank end 2 to secure it in the locked position. v
In use, the release hook being connected by its shackle 19 to a choker or sling around the anchorage and the shackle 41 of the clamp locked in the hook 16, the guy'rope 11, which is made fast to the top of the spar pole, is passed around the sheave 8, and the end of it between the clamped jaws 5 and 10, which are held apart for the purpose by the eccen- The end of this rope 11 is connected to a rope from the drum of a log hauling donkey and it is drawn tight around the pulley 8. lVhen the desired tension is imposed on the rope 11 the eccentric plates 15 are turned to allow the movable jaw 10 to securely clamp the rope against the fixed jaw 5, the being strongly drawn to gether by the turning moment imposed by the tension on the rope over the sheave 8 in its right angled'distance from the pivot 7.
The bend 13 in the jaw grip securely holds the end of this rope 11 against slip as long as tension is maintained on the rope, and this grip is increased by forming the inner surfaces of the jaw members to the conformation of the twist of the wire rope, as shown in Fig. 4.
To prevent release of the grip through slacking of the guy rope 11, as when a heavy load is swung to the side adjacent to it, a strirrup or U bolt 26, see Fig. 5, is applied over the projecting ends of the jaw members 5 and 10, after the guy rope has been tightened. This securing means will hold the clamp against the possibility of slip until it is required to release it;
lVhen it is required to release the guy rope for removal or otherwise, the pin is withdrawn from the apertures 22 and the lock member 23, 25 is thrown back on its pivot, as represented in Fig. 3, when the hook 16 under the tension of the guy rope 'will invert as represented and release the shackle of the clamp. From the clamp the rope may bereleased by removing the stirrup bolt and opening the jaw members 5,
10, which are not held together when tension on the rope 11 is relieved. I
Opening of these'jaw members 5, 10 might alone effect release of the guy rope, but the drag of the rope through between the jaws 5, 10, as they are being opened, would effect aninjury on the rope which it is desired to avoid, hence the requirement of the releasable hook 16.
Having now particularly described my invention, l hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent,is:
1. A means for connecting a wire rope to an anchorage, said means comprising a resheave before being passed between the rope engaging jaws whereby the tension of the rope w ll cause a thrust at the "axis or the pulley tending to force the p voted members jaw on that of the other member to clamp.

2. A means for securing a wire rope to an anchorage, said means comprising a clamp member releasably' connected to the anchorage, said clamp comprising a clamp member having one half ofa rope engaging grip, a second clamp member pivotally connected to the first named clamp member and carried upward and forward from its pivot to carry at its end the other rope engaging grip, and a sheave rotatably mountedin the bend of the second clamp member over the upper side of which sheave the rope to be secured may be passed around and through between the two rope engaging grips whereby the tension of the rope may hold one jaw member on the other. 7
3. A'means for connecting a steel wire rope to its anchorage, said means comprising an L-shaped clamp member releasably connected to the anchorage, an opposed clamp member pivotally connected to the first clamp member, said second clamp member carrying a sheave betweenthe pivot and the clamp around the upper side of which sheave the wire rope to be secured is passed posed rope engaging grips shaped to the cross section of the rope, one of which grips is secured to one end of a member, the other end of which member s connected to the anchorage, the other rope grip being secured to one end of another jaw member, the other end of which is pivotally connected to the first named member intermediate of its ends, and a sheave mounted on the last'named j aw member around which sheave the" rope to be tightened is passed before being passed through between the rope grips whereby the tension of the rope holds the rope engaging 'grips'together.
5. A means for connectinga:wire' rope to its anchorage, said means comprising opposed rope engaging grips shaped to the cross section of the rope, one of which grips is secured to one end of a jaw member, the other end of which member is connected to the anchorage, the other rope gripbeing secured to one end of another jaw member,
the other end of which is pivotally connected to the first named member intermediate of its ends, a sheave mounted on the last named jaw member around which sheave the rope to be tightened is passed before being passed through between the rope grips whereby the tension of the rope holds the rope engaging grips together, and means for forcibly moving the rope engaging grips apart.
6. A means for connecting a wire rope to its anchorage, said means com rising opposed rope engaging grips shaped to the cross section of the rope, one of which grips is secured to one end of a jaw member, the other end of which member is connected to the anchorage, the other rope grip being secured to one end of another jaw member, the other end of which is pivotally connected to the first named member intermediate of its ends, a sheave mounted on the last named jaw member around which sheave the rope to be tightened is passed before being passed through between the rope grips whereby the tension of the rope holds the rope engaging grips together, and a cam member mounted on one of the rope grips with the edges of the cam engaging the other grip whereby partial rotation of the cam member will forcibly move the jaw members apart.
7. A means for connecting a wire rope to its anchorage, said means comprising opposed rope engaging grips shaped to the cross section of the rope, one of which grips is secured to one end of a jaw member, the ther end of which member is connected to the anchorage, the other rope grip being secured to one end of another aw member, the other end of which is pivotally connected to the first named member intermediate of its ends, a sheave mounted on the last named ja member, around which sheave th rope to be tightened is passed before being passed through between the rope grips whereby the tension of the rope holds the rope engaging grips together, and means independent of the tension on the rope for clamping the jaw members together on the wire rope. A means for connecting a wire rope to its anchorage, said means comprising opposed rope engaging grips shaped to the cross section of the rope, said rope engaging grips having convex and concave interfitting portions intermediate of their ends, one of which grips is secured to one end of a jaw member, the other end of which member is connected to the anchorage, the other rope grip being secured to one end of another aw member, the other end of which is pivotally connected to the first named member intermediate of its ends, and a sheave mounted on the last named jaw member around which sheave the rope to be tightened is passed before being passed through between the rope grips whereby the tension of the rope holds the rope engaging grips together.
9. A means for securing a wire rope to its anchorage, said means comprising an L- shaped double plate frame, said frame hav- 1ng a shackle connected between the upper ends of its upright portion, and one half of a rope engaging grip to the extreme end of the horizontally disposed portion, a second double plate frame pivotally connected to the horizontal portion of the L frame and carried upward and forward therefrom, and having secured to its other end a rope engaging grip opposed to that of the L frame, grooved sheave rotatably mounted at the bend of the second named frame, around which sheave the end of the rope to be socured is passed before passing it between the clamp grips, an eccentric cam rotatably mounted in one of the jaw members of the clamp and engaging the other jaw member t force the j aw members apart when partially rotated, means independent of the ten sion on the rope for clamping the jaw members together on a rope between them, and means for releasably connecting the shackle of the clamp to the anchorage.
10. A means for connecting a wire rope t an anchorage, said mean comprising a releasable hook connected to the anchorage, an L frame connected at one end to the releasable hook, and having at the other end one half of a rope engaging grip, a second frame pivotally mounted at one end to the L frame and projecting upward and forward from its pivot with the other half of the rope engaging grip secured to it, and a sheave mounted in the second clamp frame around which sheave the wire rope to be secured is passed before passing it through be ween the rope engaging grips.
