SOUND-REPRODUCER FOR PHONOGRAPHS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Application filed December 11, 1919. Serial No. 344,021.
To all fwiom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DE NEAULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sound-Reproducers for Phonographs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sound reproducers for phonographs and more particularly to the stylus arms there- The principal object is to provide a soundarm so constructed as to have added weight and thus produce a softer tone than usually experienced in phonographs equipped with the ordinarily constructed reproducers.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction-and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
I attain these objects by constructing the stylus arm substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the improved. stylus arm;
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the stylus arm;
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the stylus arm; and
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 4.

This improved stylus arm is attachable to reproducers of the usual construction and as illustrated in the drawings is shown mounted on a reproducer including a substantially cup-shaped casing C in which is secured a diaphragm D, said diaphragm being held in place by a pair of rubber gaskets and a locking ring, said locking ring and gaskets being secured to the casing by screws or other suitable fasteners. A stylus holder is mounted on the lower edge of the reproducer casing in such a manner as to oscillate and vibrate the diaphragm D through the stylus arm whose structure is about to be set forth.
In constructing this` improved stylus arm I employ a substantially L-shaped arm l, one end of which is secured to the `diaphragm D in the usual or any preferred manner, and the other end is soldered or otherwise connected to a `hollow body 2 as clearly shown in F igs.` 2 and 4. While I may form this body 2 in any suitable manner I preferably form it from a suitable metal, and make it of such a length as to extend from the equalizing preferred form the body is substantially triangular in cross section as shown in Fig. 7 and is provided near its upper end with a transverse slot 4, said slot extending the full width of the outer face of the body and substantially one-half the width of the other two sides. ItV is understood that the depth and extension of this slot may be varied to Y obtain better results.
The upper inner faces are beveled or inclined as shown at 5, the lower endof the arm l being attached to the body 2 at the juncture of the inclined and vertical portions of said body. It should be noted that the hollow body 2 is relatively large and set to one side of the stylus arm as shown in Fig. 2 and therefore the stylus arm will be given added weight and the sound boX will produce a soft tone.
In a phonograph equippedwith a reproducer carrying heretofore described the surface scratching will be eliminated through the action of the hollow body upon the sound-waves and the usual objectional roaring noises will be eliminated through the provision of they slot in the sidewall of said body.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of this invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
