To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ORIN J. ZOOK and J OHN C. MAnsHALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mine-Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in mine cars and has relation more particularly to a car of this general character embodying a tilting or dumping body, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the body may be effectively locked in its lowered or operative position yet readily and conveniently released when it is desired to tilt the same to effect adumping operation.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide novel andimproved car of this general character including a tail gate which is effectively locked in closed position when the body is in its lowered OI'l'lOllllal position but which is automatically released when the body is tilted.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved car of this general character wherein none of the mech anism for locking thebody in its lowered or normal position or for locking the tail gate projects outwardly of the body of the car.
y The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved car whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The frame'C, when applied, depends from the frame F at a point in advance of but in'close proximity to the front truck or axle 3 or'more parti'cularlyimme diately below the portion of the frame F with which the intermediate portion 10* of the bolster 10 engages and also preferably at the transverse center of said frame F.
The portion of the frame F within the area defined by the applied frame C is provided with a circular opening 12 through which is adapted to extend a depending'part or member ll'arranged at substantially the longitudinal center of the portion 10 of the bolster l0 and preferably integral therewith. The part or member 14 is prefe'ably in the form of a truncated cone although we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselvesto this exact formation. Suitably secured to the axial center of the lower end of the part or member 161 is depending shank 15 provided at 1ts lower or free end with a head 16 parti-spherical in fornrwith its upper or inner portion 16 arranged on a taper. The tapered portion16e' is concentric to the aXialce'nte-r of the shank 15 and it is preferred that the partispherical portion 16 of the head 16be inexcess of a semisphere in a vertical direction. V
Disposed through the side members 17 of the frame 0 at opposite sides of the lone'i .tudinal center thereof and bridging tie space between said side members 17 are th pintle members or bolts 18. Each of the bolts 18 is provided at one end with a head 19 adapted to substantially contact with the outer face of the forward or outer side meme ber 17 and the opposite end portion of said belt or member 18 extends beyond the inner or rear side member. Disposed through said extended portion of the member or bolt 18 is a locking pin 20 whereby said bolt. is effecment about the member or bolt 18 in a direction transversely ofjthe' body 7B.

The annular member or ring 24 is carried by and preferably integrally formed with an extremity of. an elongated and forwardly directedarm or bar 25 disposed upwardly on a predetermined incline with respect to the annular member or ring" 24. The forward or free end portion of the bar 25 extends be tween a pairof lugs 26 depending' from the frame F and is pivotally engaged therewith through the instrumentality of-the pin 27. or the like. By this means, the annular member or ring 24- is capable of vertical movement so that the same may be raised or elevated sulliciently to free the shoulders 22 in order to permit the jaws or dogs D to separate to release the head 16 when it is desired to tilt the body B to effect a dump"- mg operation. Depending from the central portion of the inner or rear side member 17 of the frame G is a pair of spaced arms or brackets 28' manually, as by the foot of a person, when required. The rear end portion of the plate 9 is provided with an upstanding bolster 33' with which the bottom 5 of the body B also engages when inits normal position and whereby the weight of the load is effectively distributed upon the frame F. 1
T denotes a tail gate or door coacting with the rear end of the body B and having its upper side portions pivotally engaged with the upper portions of the body 13 so that said door or tailgate T, when moving into an open position, swings upwardly. Suitably secured to the lower marginal portion of the door or tail gate T, at substantially its center, is a strap 34. The lower end of the strap Ed is continued by a bolt extending beyond the lower margin of the door or gate T and which is adapted to be engaged by the jaws to hold the door or gate T in its lowered or closed position.

The casing E substantially U-shaped in cross section and its'longitudinal margins are defined by the outstanding flanges 38 which are suitably anchored, as at 39,.to the bottom 5 of the body B. The outer or rear end portions of the sideflinembers 40 of the casing E immediately adjacent the flanges 38 are provided with the open slots {ti and adjacent the lower marginal portion of each of said slots 41 is an outstanding ear 4-2. Each of the jaws 36 is arcuate in form and extends between an ear 42 and a flange 38 and is pivotally held thereb'etween by the pin 4L3, or the like. 'Said jaw has swinging movement through the slot ll so that the same may be readily and effectively engaged with the bolt 35.
Arranged within the casing E for rectilinear movement therein is a plate or bolt 4:4: provided at its forward end with an up-- standing block 45. v The forward portion of the block 45 has its-side portions cut away, as at 46, to provide cam elements 47 coacta ing withthe inwardly directed extensions or. tails d8 provided at the pivoted end portions of the jaws 36 so that upon outward movement of the plate or boltv 44, the aws 36 will be separated to disengage from the bolt 35; Then the door drops or returns to its lowered or closed position, the 0011-. tact of the bolt at with the adjacent end of the plate or bolt a l will move said plate or bolt inwardly and thereby result in an inward swinging movement of the jaws 36 to properly engage the bolt 35 to hold the door or gate T in its lowered or closed position. The inner or forward end portion of the plate or bolt 44: is provided with an upstanding block or flange 49 provided with an opening 50 in alinement or registering with an opening 51 provided in the inner or closed end52 of the casing E. The base portion of the opening 50 is continued by longitudinally disposed groove or channel provided in the upper faceof the plate or bolt 4A and the inner end 54L of said groove or channel constituteswa stop. The plate or bolt i l, at apoint inwardly of but in close proximity to the lock or flange 49, as at 55, is of increased thicknessand the inner face of said portion 55 affords a shoulder 56 also serving as a stop. The'portion 55 also has disposed therethrough the groove or channel hereinbefore referred to. The upper surface or face 57 of the plate or bolt dl between the block and the shoulder or stop 56 is disposed on a predetermined incline tiroughout its entire length downwardly and toward the shoulder or stop 56.
Contacting with the surface or face 57 of the plate or bolt is the free end portion of the latch plate extending in a direction longitudii'ially of the plate or bolt id. The forward end portion of the latch plate 538 is pivotally supported by the pin 59, or the like, disposed transvert ly throughsaid end portion of the latch plate and supported by the side walls 4.0 of the casing E adjacent the upper edges thereof and at a point inwardly of but in close proximity to the block 45 when the plate or bolt l i is at the limit of its inward or retracted movement. The inner or free end portions of the latch plate 58 contacts by gravity with the face or surface 5'? of the bolt or plate and when in contact with the shoulder or stop 56 ed to travel within the groove or channel 53. Extending laterally from the inner or working'endportion of the latch plate 58 is an arm 63 which projects exteriorly of the casing E through an opening 6 1 provided in a side member 4-0 of the easing E. The extended portion of the arm 63 is provided with a depending arm which provides means whereby the latch plate may be manually raised when the occasions of practioe may so require. A dumping oar comprising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted thereon for tilting movement, a headed member depending from the body, relatively movable jaws supported by the frame, said headed member extending between the jaws and held thereby when the body is in its lowered position, each of said jaws being provided with an outstanding shoulder, a member surrounding the shoulders of the jaws when said jaws are in looking engagement with the headed member to hold said jaws against separating movement, and means for freeing said member from the shoulders to permit the jaws to separate.

A dumping car comp ising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted there on for tilting movement, a gravity closing tail gate carried by the body and supported for swinging movement, relatively movable jaws carried by the body and coacting with the gate for holding the gate in closed position, and automatic means operable upon tilting movement of the body in one direction to separate the jaws to release the gate.

A dumping car comprising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted thereon for tilting movement, a swinging end gate carried by the body, a bolt carried by said end gate, a pair of relatively movable jaws carried by the body and automatically engaging the bolt when the gate is in closed position to hold said gate against opening movement, and automatic means operable upon tilting movement of the body in one direction to separate the jaws to release the gate.

A. dumping car comprising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted thereon for tilting movement, a swinging end gate for the body, a bolt carried by the gate, a casing secured to the body, swinging jaws carried thereby and engaging the bolt when the door is closed to hold the door against opening movement, and a movable plate within the casing, said plate and jaws being provided with coacting means whereby the jaws are caused to separate upon movement of the plate in one direction.

A dumping car comprising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted thereon for tilting movement, a swinging end gate for the body, a bolt carried by the gate, a casing secured to the body, swinging jaws carried thereby and engaging the bolt when the door is closed to hold the door against opening movement, a movable plate within the casing, said plate and jaws being provided with coacting means whereby the jaws are caused to separate upon movement of the plate in one direction, and means for locking said plate against such movement.

A dumping car comprising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted nation, a tru k thereon for tilting movement, a swinging end gate for the body, a bolt carried by the gate, a casing secured to the body, swinging j aws carried thereby and engaging the bolt when the door is closed/to hold the door against opening movement, a movable plate within the casing, said plate and jaws being provided with ooaoting means whereby the j a\ *s are caused to separate upon movement of the plate in one direction, means for looking said plate against such movement, and automatic means for rendering said last named means inoperative.

A dumping car comprising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted thereon for tilting movement, a swinging end gate for the body, a bolt carried by the gate, a casing secured to the body, swing ing jaws carried thereby and engaging the bolt when the door is closed to hold the door against opening movement, a movable plate within the casing, said plate and jaws being provided with coacting means whereby the jaws are caused to separate upon movement of the plate in one direction, means for locksaid plate against such movement, and automatic means for rendering said last named means inoperative and for imparting movement to the plate to cause the jaws to separate to release the bolt.

A dumping car comprising, in combination, a truck frame, a body mounted thereon for tilting movement, a gravity closing tail gate carried by the body and sup ported for swinging movement, relatively movable jaws carried by the body and coacting with the gate for holding the gate in closedposition, and'automatic means operable upon tilting movement of the body in one direction to separate the jaws to release the gate. said jaws automatically returning to locking position when the gate returns to its closed position.
12. A dumping car comprising. in combiframe, a body mounted thereon for tilting movement, a tail gate carried by the body and supported for swinging movement, rel atively movable jaws carried by the body and automatically engaging the tail gate when the gate is in closed position to hold said gate against opening movement, means for maintainin said jaws in such position, and automatic means operable upon tilting movement of the body in one direction to render said last named means inoperative to permit the jaws to separate to release the gate.
