To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, EDWIN D. Bonus and EMIL A. Un'rnnsnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented: certain new anduseful Improvements in Spinning-Frame Control, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the control of textile machinery sucli as spinning frames accordance with therise and fall ofthe ring rail.- One of the leading features of this control is that the controller is driven by the electric motor and is independent of the spinningv frame. One of the. objects of this arrangement is to make the controller self contained and compact so that it will be entirely separate and distinct from the spinning frame itself. There are certain advantages, however, in driving the controller from the spinning machine. .lVe have found that a controller so driven can be made very simple and compact and be practically separate from the machine. Furthermore,we have found that it is desirable to completely inclose the controller .thus avoiding the dust and dirt incidental to the spinning room and also avoid the danger of its beingtampered with by machine operators. our improved controller is located within the end shield of tlie motor thereby making the controller and the motor a selfcontained unit'connected with the machine only by the driving shaft and by a small shaft which operates the controller." Referring to Fig. 1., 10 represents the usual rollers,.11 the wire eye, and 12 the ring rail on which is mounted the ring 13 carrying thetraveler of an ordinary, ring spinning frame. In order to simplify the drawings as much as possible, we have simply shown the ringrail'in a conventional manner l l v as being operated by a lever 1o, pivoted at 16. (inc end of the lever is pivoted tojthe lowerend of the rod 17, the upper end of which is secured to the ring rail so that the ring rail movesup and down with the rod 17. The other endiof the lever carries a weight 18 for raising the ring rail. 26 which holds the roller 25 in engagement with the face of the cam in the upward movement. In order to advance the ring rail we have-provided means for gradually lengthening the cord. This is done by having the cord mounted upon a shaft 27 driven,
by a worm wheel 28. This worm wheel is driven by a worin29 mounted on a shaft 30,
to the end of which is secured a ratchetwheel 31. (loeperating with the ratchet wheel is a fixed pawl 32 so .arranged that as the end of the lever carrying the ratchet wheel israised by theweight 26 the ratchet wheelwill be turned by engagement with the pawl 32 so as to rotate the gearing and lengthen the cord. This will gradually lower the weight 18 and advance the ring rail in a well-known manner.
As a means-for varying the speed of the motor, we have illustrated a speed-Varying device of the well-known brush-shifting type, although our invention is not necessarily limited to this particular speed-varying means. As shown the brushes 33 of the motor are'attached to a yoke 34 which is adapted to reciprocate back and forth to shift the brushes. This yoke is reciprocated by a mechanism which we shall now de- Thebrush-shifting mechanism or controller receives its motion from the spinning frame by a small shaft 35 which ex tends through the brush yoke 34 by way of an elongated opening 36. This shaft is driven from the shaft on which the cam 19 .is mounted by a sprocket chain 37 and sprocket wheel 38. cam 39 of substantially the same shape as the cam 19 and is rotated at thesame rate as the cam 19. The operating member for the brushyoke is a pivoted arm 40 which is directly connected with the brush yoke by a positive driving or rigid connection in the form of an adjustable link 41; The connection between the arm 40 and the link 41 is made adjustable by means of the slotted connection '41. The upper end of the arm 40 is provided with a roller 42 which engages the face of the cam 39 sothat as the cam. rotates it will force the arm to the left in Fig. 3 and, consequently, shift the brush yoke 34. The arm and brush yoke arereturned by a spring 54 or other method. By this arrangement the-brushes, will be shifted back and forth in accordance with the rise and fall of the ring rail. In order to advance the brushes in accordance with the advance of the ring rail, we provide means for lengthening the effective radius at which the arm 40 acts on the leg 41. This a we. accomplish by means of a spring return member which comprises the spring 49, the rotatable ratchet disk 45, and the eccentric 43. secured to the shaft 44. spring 49'will vary the effective length of eccentric 48 secured to the shaft 35. V pon each revolution of the shaft 35, therefore, the pawl will turn the ratchet disk one the tension of a spiral spring 49, one end of which is secured to the disk while the other end is stationary. A pawl 50 holds the ratchet wheel in position against the spring tension. The ratchet disk is released 3 so as to permit it to return to its initial 1 position in response to spring tension b lifting the twopawls 50 and 46. This is accomplished by arm 51 actingon both pawls and operated by a handle 53. r
From the above it will be seen that as the brush yoke back and forth 34 will be positively shifted by the driving connection comprising the link 41 soas to-increase and decrease the speed of the motor over a definite range and at the same time the range isadvanced by the rotation of the ratchet disk 45operating against the spring tension so that when the doff is completed the controller mechanism will return to its normal posi tion by a simple movement of the handle 53. i5; referring-to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the mechanism is so mountedand arranged as to be included in the end shield 52, there being no connection between the controller within the end shield and the spinning ma chine other than the shaft 35. The motor and controller are, therefore, a self-contained unit which can be easily installed.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of, the United States, is, V 7 V 1. The combination with a ring spinning of an electric motor for driving the same, means for moving the brushes of the motor to vary its speed comprising a pivoted member connected to the brushes for moving'the same back and forth and reciprocated with a fixed amplitude in accordance with the periodic motion of the ring rail, and means comprising a member cooperating with said pivoted member for progressively shifting the position of the pivoted member to vary the minimum speed of such fixed amplitude in accordance with the advance of the ring rail.

The combination with a ring spinning machine or the like, of an electric motor for driving the same, means for moving the brushes of the motor to vary its speed comprising a pivoted member, means for reciprocating the same on its pivot in accordance with the rise and fall of the ring rail, and means advanced step by step in accordance with the advance of the ring rail for varying the effective radius of the pivoted member to shift the range of movement of the brushes in accordance with the advance of the ring rail.

The combination with a ring spinning machine or the like, of an electric motor for driving the same, means for moving the brushes oi the motor to vary its speed compri, 'ng a pivoted member, means for reciprocating the same on its pivot in accordance with the rise and fall of the ring rail, means for adjusting the relation between the brushes and the pivoted member, and means for varying the effective radius of the pivotedv member to shift the range of movement of the brushes in accordance with the advance of the ring rail.
6. The combination with a ring spinning machine or the like, of an electric motor for driving the same, means for moving the brushes oi the motor to vary its speed comprising a mechanism for varying the speed of the motor over a definite range in accordance with the rise and fall of the ring rail, a. spring means for gradually advancing the range against the bias of the spring means for holding the range advancing means in its advanced positions, and means for disengaging the holding means to cause the range advancing means to return in accordance with the bias of the spring.
7. The combination with a ring spinning machine or the like, of an electric motor for driving the same and means for moving the brushes of the motor to vary its speed comprising a mechanism for varying the speed of the motor over a definite range in accordance with the rise and fall of the ring rail, a spring return ratchet disk cooperating with said mechanism and held in each position against the spring tension for gradually advancing the range and means for releasing the ratchet disk.
8; The combination with a ring spinning machine or the like, of an electric motor for driving the same and means for moving the brushes of the motor to vary its speed comprising a pivoted member, a cam driven by the machine for reciprocating the same on its pivot in accordance with the rise and fall of the ring rail, a spring returned ratchet disk rotated step by step by the machine and cooperating with said pivoted member to vary the relation between the member and the brushes to advance the range of the latter, and means for releasing the ratchet disk to permit it to return to its initial position. a
