The draft sills 1 overlap the rearwardly extending flanged members 18 which are preferably formed on the casting 15 and each sill is connected to the adjacent flanged member 18 by the rivets 16 which pass through alined holes 17 provided in the webs of the overlapping members. -The flanged members 18 are spaced apart and the flanges 19 thereof preferably extend inwardlyextends between the members 18 and abuts the rib 2O 'formed on the wall 21 of the said casting; the flanges 1d of the center sill preferably overlap the flanges 19 of the members 18 and may also abut the upper and lower thickened portions 22 of the wall 2l.
The rivets 23 serve to unite the casting 15 and the center sill 1a, the said rivets pass ing through and connecting the adjacent` pairs of flanges 19 and 1d on the casting 15 and. the center sill 1, respectively.
To contact the cushioning mechanism, to hold the same from rearward movement, from normal, l preferably provide the casting 15 with a forwardly projecting tapering portion comprising a transversely extending wall or web 24 adapted to contact with the draft gear, the said wall or web 24 being connected to the wall 21 by means of the 'vertically extending webs or flanges 25,-and
26. The webs 25 may, and preferably do, extend at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis of the sills. To strengthen the webs 24, 25 and 26 they are preferably provided adjacent their upper and lower edges with flanges such as 27, the said flanges being rearwardly tapering.

ln the form of the device illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, the combined back stop and tie casting` 15*x is designed for use on car underframes similar to those heretofore described except in place of the singleY center sill, a pair of spaced channel-shaped center sills 1b are employed.
The draft sills 1 are adapted to overlap at their inner ends the forward ends of the center sills 1b and the stop casting 15 is adapted to abut the forward ends of ccntci sills. The said casting is preferably pro vided with a pair of spaced lugs 18 which extend rearwardly of the forward ends of4 the center sills l" and which are. rcspccsills and by the lower vertical rivets which pass through the lower tie plate and the lower flanges of the sills.

A pair of vertically extending webs 25 serve to connect the wall 24 to the thickened portions 20a of the webs 21H. F langes 27u are formed on the upper and lower edges of the webs 24 and 25a to strengthen the same. Upper and lower webs 27" are preferably provided, each of these webs extends from a flange 27 on the web 24F- to the web 21a and serves to strengthen the web 211.
To connect the casting 15a to the cover plate 36, and support the latter, there is provided' an angular shaped member 37 which is connected to the ribs 24 and the upper web 21lx and is connected to the plate 36 by means of rivets 38. ln this embodiment of the device also, the entire bufling load lis delivered as a. direct compression to the center sills by the stop casting ,independently of the draft sills and the connecting means.
The draft strains, however, are transmitted directly to the center sills by the draft sills independently of the stop casting.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11 there is shown a combined bufllng block, tie casting and center bearing designated generally by the reference numeral 39.
