PENCIL-CLIP.
lSpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented N ov. 9, 1920.
Application filed .'fanuaryl 15, 1920. Serial No. 351,602.
T o all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. SAUN- DERS, `a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pencil-Clips, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved pencil clip and has for its object to. provide a lift clip having a spring arm with a lifting' lever secured to the outside thereof, said lifting lever and spring arm being of approximately the same width at all points where they are adjacent `and tapering'soas to present a neat and attractive appearance. further object of my invention is to produce a pencil clip which is simple to manufacture and durable in construction, and to avoid the clumsy appearance which results from having the body of one of the two membersl mentioned pass through the y body of the other.
The following is a description of a pencil clip embodying my invention, reference be-y ing had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l shows a side elevation of a clip embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 shows a section of the same on the line 242;
Fig. 3 shows on a reduced scale the lift lever in two stages of manufacture;
Fig. 4 shows in detail the spring arm and pencil clamp separate from the lifting arm.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is al pencil claspingl portion which has formed integral therewith a forwardly projecting spring arm 2 having near its rear end a perforation 3 and upon its forward end'a slightly dished circular head portion 4 connected to the body of the spring arm by a narrowed neck 4. 5 is a lifting or releasing lever from the medial portion of which a slight downwardly projecting prong 6 is struck up, thelsame being passed through the perforation 3 in the spring arm` In making this ball the blank is first struck out so as to have four arms 8,l as shown at the top in Fig. 3; these arms are then bent into parallel relation, as shown at the center in Fig. 3 and the prong 6 formed, after which the end 4 of the spring arm is laid therein, the prong 6 on the lifting lever being passed through the perforation 3 in the spring arm. The radiating portions l8 are then bent down over the circular portion 4 of the spring arm so as to embrace it firmly and formx a ball, while the prong 6 on the lifting-.arm is bent backward `so as to secure the rear end of the spring arm to the lifting arm. In order to provide further finish, and/also to hold the two parts more firmly together, the lifting the spring arm lies, these anges being formed from the parts 9 in Fig.- 3. y
In this way a lift pencil clip is provided in which the body of neither member passes through 'the other so that no enlargement is necessary, thespring arm andlifting arm being substantially parallel at all vpoints of contact, theinner one lying within a channel in the outer so as to help` define their relations and improve the appearance of the finished clip; also a clip in which the lifting i arm tapers from one end to the other so as to present apleasing appearance. The clip is also simplefto manufacture and of durable construction. The clip is released in the ordinary manner by pressing -on the eXtension at the rear end of the lifting lever.
As willbe evident'to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
Whatv I claim is: 1. In a pencil clip, the combination of a pencil clasping portion having integral therewith an offset forwardly projecting spring arm, a lifting lever in contact with the outer side of said spring arm and rigidly secured thereto at a point adjacent to its' rear end and having its forward end rigidly secured to the forwardend, of said spring arm, said spring arm and said lifting lever being substantlally parallel between the points at which they are secured f together.
i spring arm, a lifting lever in contact with///sprin the outside of said spring arm and rigidly 2. In'a pencil clip, the combination of a closing the forward end of said spring arm,
pencil clasping portion having integral the portion of said spring arm within said therewith an offset forwardly projecting ball being connected to the body, of said secured thereto at a point adjacentl to its rear end and havingV its forward end secured to the forward end of said spring arm, said spring arm and said lifting lever being substantially parallel between the points at which they are secured together, said lifting llever having ahollow ball inolosing the for ward end of said spring arm and constituting the means for securing said forwardends together.
3. In a pencil clip, the combination of a pencil clasping portion having integral therewith an offset forwardly projecting spring arm, a lifting lever in contact with the outer side of said spring arm and rigidly secured thereto at a point adjacent to its rear end and having its forward end.
'secured to the forward end of said spring lsaid lifting lever having a hollow ball inarm by a reduced portion.
4. n la pencil clip, the combination of a pencil clasping portion having lintegral therewith an offset forwardly projecting spring arm, a lifting lever riveted to the outer side of said spring arm at a point adjacent to its rear end and having its forward end-secured to the forward end of arm.
