Description

A. NOVICK.
ENVELOP FASTENEB.
APPLICATION HLED SEPT.26, 1916.
1,358,234. Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
IN VEN TO R. WM
UNITED STATSPATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM NOVICK, or NEW YORK, n. Y., ASSIGNOR ro F. I SCHMIDT COMPANY, or 7 NEW YORK, 1v. A CORPORATION or new roan.
Application filed September 26, 1916.
To all 2072 can it may concern e it known that I, ABRAHAM: Novion, a
citizen of the United States, of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelop fasteners for holding closed the flap of an envelop.
The object of this invention is to provide a fastener or clasp that is inexpensive both in its construction and method of applying it to an envelop. Further objects are to avoid the use of exposed metal and to provide a fastener that can be supplied to the envelop maker in the form of a reel of tape properly prepared for forming and attaching to envelops.
eferring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view of an envelop with fastener in its preferred form, single tongue type. Fig. 2 shows the same fastener with the flap closed. Fig. 3 shows the same fastener enlarged. Fig. lshows the same type of fastener modified so as to form a double tongue fastener. Fig. 5 shows it holding a flap closed. Fig. 6 shows it enlarged. Fig.
shows another modification of the same fastener detail view of the fastener tape or material before forming and attaching. F ig. 9 is a section on line A. A. of Fig. 8.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention the fastener material comprises a strip of sheet material 1, which may be of paper, cloth or some other suitable stock. This strip is provided with an adhesive 2 on one face thereof. A metal strip 3, preferably materially narrower than strip 1, has folded thereabout a second strip of sheet material 13 and said second strip may inclose said metal strip 3. Preferably said second strip 13 is approximately twice the width of said metal strip and has its lateral edges folded over the edges of the meta] strip thereby incasing said metal strip. Then said second strip 13, inclosing said metal strip, is laid lengthwise and preferably positioned midway widthwise said first strip 1, with the faces of the adjoining edge portions of said second strip 13 contacting with and secured to said first strip 1 by adhesive 2. There is thereby provided a strip of envelop fastener material as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 adapted to be supplied to the Specification of Letters Patent.
as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Fig. 8 is a Patented Nov. 9, 19.20,. Serial No. 122,190.
envelop manufacturer. For forming individual fasteners, a short portion is severed from the strip of fastener material of F ig- 8, see Fig. 3; and that portion of strip 1 to which strip 13 is attached, the widthwise mid-portion in Fig. 3, is separated near one end thereof from the laterally adjoining portion or portions 11 and 12 by cuts or incisions 4, l. Preferably these incisions extend from one half to two thirds the length of the short portion of Fig. 3. There is thereby formed a prong or tongue 5, comprising a portion of strip 1, a portion of folded strip 13 and a portion of metal strip 3. The gummed surface 2 is then moistened and applied to the envelop as in Fig. l, the prong 5 being bent up and passed through the flap hole 6 and then bent over until flat as in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 shows a fastener of the double tongue type made up of the strip of fastener material of Fig. 8 by cutting a portion therefrom and making four cuts therein, then applying it to the envelop as in Fig. 4:. The two tongues 7 and 8 are then raised and passed through the flap hole 9 and bent back again as in Fig. 5.
The fastener shown in Fig. 7 is made similar to the one shown in Fig. 3 except that the side portions 11 and 12 are cut away.
Claims: 1
1. An envelop fastener including in combination a strip of sheet material having an adhesive on one face, a strip of metal narrower than said strip of sheet material, and a second strip of sheet material folded about said metal strip, said second strip of sheet material, carrying said metal strip, being laid lengthwise said first strip of sheet material and secured thereto by said adhesive, that portion of said first strip of material, to which said folded second strip is attached, being separated near the end from the laterally adjoining portion thereof whereby a tongue, comprising an end portion of said first strip, an end portion of said second strip and an end portion of said metal strip, is formed.
2. An envelop fastener including in combination a strip of sheet material having an adhesive on one face, a strip of metal narrower than said strip of sheet material laid lengthwise and -positioned midway widthwise said strip of sheet material, and inclosing means for attaching said metal-strip to said strip of sheet material, that midportion of said strip of material to which said metal strip inclosing means is attached being separated near the end from the laterally adjoining portions thereof, whereby a widthvvise centrally located inclosed tongue is formed.
3. An envelop fastener including in combination a strip of sheet material having an adhesive on one face, a strip of Vmetalincased for its Whole length in another strip of material, said incasing strip of material being attached to said first strip of material by the adhesive thereon, said first strip of material being of greater incased Width than said strip 01% metal and slittea near its end, adjacent said incased metal strip, to permit the end of said incased metal strip be bent away from the adjacent body portion of said first mentioned strip When sald body portion. is attached by its an envelop.
