Be it known that I, PHILIP GADnsKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at Mystic, county of Appanoose, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Bailroad-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision of means whereby the tongue and point of a railway switch may be moved so as to divert a train from one track to another by its passage over the track sli htly in advance of the switch.
it further object is to provide means which automatically reset themselves after the passage of the train, the position of the switch point being indicated by signals as is usual.
A further object being to provide means whereby the mechanism may berendered inoperative at any desired time.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a track section showing a tongue and point and inclicating the application of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 indicates one of the running rails and 11 the other, the latter rail being bent outwardly into the curve 12, the switch point 14 being also curved in conformity with a fixed curved rail 15, secured to the other portion 16 of the straight track rail 11, and after passing the space for the wheels, alines with the point 17 Both switch points 14: and 17 are securely bolted to brackets 18 standing up from a transversely disposed bar 19 passlng under the rails and provided with an elongated slot 20, through which extend pins 21 and 22, which limit the motion of the bar, and therefore of the switch and points.

jections 26, arranged midway in their length, these projections being fitted to recelve stems 27, extending downward from arcuately'curved caps 28, fitted to the sides of the casings and. supported by pairs of bent flat springs 29, the ends of which rest upon the covers 25, their center portions extending upward within the longitudinal re cesses 30, thesprings normally holding-the caps in a raised position.
Extending out from one side of the caps are fixed pins 31, the same being operatively engaged in slots having a straight portion 32, and an angular portion 33, joined at their upper ends, the angular portion terminating in a recess34, the slots being formed in levers 35, also having longitudinal slots 36, at their ends receptive of fixed pins137, extending from the sides of the casings 2d.
The opposite ends of the levers'35 are pivoted by pins 38 to levers39, fulcrumed on pins 10, in brackets 11, the levers being pro-' vided with offset operating handles 42, by'
which they may be readily manipulated, and it will be obvious that upon drawing the levers in one direction, the pinsBl are forced into the angular slots 33,thereby depressing the caps 28, and thus providing means whereby the device maybe rendered inoperative.
Slidably arranged longitudinally within the casings 24 are bars 44:, having diagonally disposed profiles-at one end, and terminating in projections 16 to which is attached one end of coiled tension springs 47, the other ends being engaged in eyes set in the casing, while the opposite ends 48 0f the bars are formed diagonally in a plane at a right angle from the angular elements 45.
The elements 4.8 are adapted tomakecontact with the similarly beveled ends 19, of the transverse bar 19 so that as the bars are moved in either of the housings, sliding motion is conveyed to the bar 19, which is further provided with V shaped recesses 50, near each end, upon opposite sides, in which are engageable detents 51, normally pressed into operative position by the flat springs 52, thereby holding the bar 19 in either of its adjusted positions.
Also one end 53 of the bar 19 is formed with rack teeth 5% engageable with the teeth of a gear 55, this gear being mounted upon a standard 56, held in an extension 57 of one I claim as new and desire to of the casings 24, the standard 56 having at its upper end a pair of signals 58, disposed at right angles one to the other and which are obviously rotated by movement" of the bar 19.

As best illustrated in Fig. 3 the device may bemade inoperative by a passing train by means of the manually operated levers diZwhich, when raised, will draw by the intermediary of sliding levers the pins 31 into recess 34 and pin 37 to the end of the slot 36 so that the caps 28 to which the pins are secured will obviously be lowered.

In a railway switch throwing device, the combination with the running rails, having a pair of switch points and a bar con necting said switch below said running rails, said bar having diagonally disposed ends, of track side devices comprising casings, bars slidable longitudinally therein, means for holding said bars in one direction, angular elements formed with said bars at each end, one of said ends being adapted to make contact with said switch bar, arcuate caps adapted to move vertically on said casings, means for holding said caps in a normally raised position, projections extending inward from said caps through said casings adapted to make contact with the other beveled surface" of said bars, and means for holding said switch bar in either of its adjusted positions.
