To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAF E. FELLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomer, in the county of Chippewa and State of llfisconsin, have invented a new and useful Bench-Dog, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to work benches employed in wood working, and more parl vtheir various positions of adjustment.
A still further objectV of the invention is the provision of a bench dog which will firmly grip the material under operation, when pressure is applied thereto, during the planing. f
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details Vof construction hereinafter described -and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may vbe made within the scope of what is claimed, without departingfrom the spirit ofthe invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 Adesignates a portion of a bench, which is c ut away to receive the ,base or supporting `member of the bench dog.
This baseincludes an upper .stationary member `6, which is relativelyr long and provided with a plurality of openings 7 e2;- tending therethrough, the Vupper` "member having a right angled end portion 8, which is also apertured to receive the .securing screws `9 which pass into the bench proper to secure Yone en'd of the base to the bench, the opposite end of the member (i being secured to the bench as by means of the screws l0.

In order that 'the movable member will be retained in operative relation with the stationary member, transversely extending supporting bars `15 .are provided which have their ends secured tothe stationary member 6, the central portions thereof being offset to accommodate the lower movable member so that the vlower movable member may slide longitudinally of the upper stationary member. f
One ofthe bars 15 is vprovided with a hooked portion as at `16, which hooked portion provides a retaining member for one extremity of the coiled spring 17, the oppocoiled spring' besite extremity of said ing positioned over the hooked member 18 so that a pressure will be exerted on the movable member 12to normally 'hold the openings 7 and 13 out of registry with each other. The clamping-members of `the dog include a pair of arms 18 which have their ends oppositely curved, there being a central rod 19 having connection with each of the arms, which rods are provided with a plurality of cut out portions20 disposed in spaced relation throughout the lengths thereof to provide shoulders 21, andV im clined surfacesV 22,the inclined surfaces be'- ing designed to ride over one wall of the non-registering openings to move the movable member l2 longitudinally of the stationary member 6, with tlieresult that the coiled spring 17 urges the movable member- 12 in the opposite direction to cause the Walls of the openings toV rictionally engage the rod 19 associated therewith.
It will of course be understood that when a bench dog constructed in accordance with the present invention is applied'to a bench,
openings indicated at 28 should be formed' in the bench to register with the openings 7 of the stationary plates 6, so that the rods ofl the clamping members of the bench dog may pass through the openings of the bench and be secured iii upright positions.

It itis found desirable to .employ this bench dog for'use with a board, in the event that av work bench is not available, openings corresponding to the openings 23may be formed in a board, Vand the clamping .member illustrated more particularly by Fig. 4 of the drawing, may be secured to the supporting rods of the clamping Amembers, to support the same in upright-positions.
These 'clamping members comprise a pair of opposed jaws 24 pivotally connected as at 25, a coiled spring 26 being shown as having connection lwith each of the jaws 24, to normallyurge the same toward each other so that when the clamping member is p0si.
