Description

UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFIQE.
JOHN F. OCONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIM H. MINER, 0F
CHAZY, NEW YORK.
sinn BEARING.
Application led April 11,
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, JOHN F. OCoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of llinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in side bearings.
One of the objects 0f the invention is to provide a simple side bearing including a bodily rolling .anti-friction element and especially adapted for attachment to the body bolster of a car.
In the drawings forming a part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view of portions of a body and a truck bol* ster showing my improved side bearing mounted in connection therewith, the full lines indicating the anti-friction element to show it in normal position while the dotted lines show rits position at the end of its movement in one direction. Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view taken on line 2 2 of F ig. 1.
In said drawings, the numeral 3 indicates the lower portion of a body bolster of a railway car and 4f a portion of the truck bolster, the two bolsters being pivoted together and spaced apart in the, usual manner, which will be understood.
The side bearing, which is mounted between the two bolsters, comprises a base member 5, an anti-friction element 6 mounted therein, a filler block 7 and a key 8, all of which will be hereinafter more specifically described. The base member 5 is preferably a casting and is of substantially hollow rectangular shape provided with the internal chamber 9 to receive the anti-friction member and outwardly provided with the lugs 10-10 by means of which it is secured to the under face of the body bolster 3 by suitable means as for instance the rivets 11-11.
Within the chamber 9 of the base member 5 a pair of longitudinally extended tracks or ways 12-12 are provided, the same being preferably formed upon the upper faces of the inturned flanges 135-13 in the lower walls of the base member 5. The said tracks are each provided at intervals with Specification of Letters Patent.
1919. Serial No. 289,192.
the upwardly projecting lugs or points 14 which, are adapted to enter the similarly conformed openings 15 provided in the under face 16 of the st'anchions 17-17. The said stanchions in the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings are two in number, one for either end of the antifriction member o. Each stanchion is p'rovided with a perforation 18 forming a bearing for a trunnion or journal 19 with which the anti-friction element 6 is provided at either end.
The said anti-friction element 6 is pref erably solid and its trunnions 19 are concentrically arranged with respect to the bearing face 2O of the anti-friction element 6. The bearing surface 2O is so conformed that the radius from the aXis of the trunnions 19 to the uppermost point of the surface 20 when the anti-friction element is in its normal position as shown by the full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, is substantially constant. The lower bearing face 21 of the anti-friction member, which is adapted in the operation of the anti-friction member to engage the upper face 22 of the truck bolster, is concentric with the trunnions 19 and of a somewhat longer radius than that from said trunnions to the upper bearing surface 20, thus forming a counterbalanced weight, as indicated at 23, so that the anti-friction element 6 will, through gravity, return to its central normal position Y after the release of pressure following the actuation of the element 6. The stanchions 17 are provided with a counterbalance at their lower ends as vindicated at 24 and the under face of each of said stanchions, as indicated at 16, is preferably upon an arc` struck substantially from the aXis of the trunnions 19.
The usual conformation of the body bolster in a railroad car is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings in this,-that the same at its ends where the side bearing is designed to be attached is angular to the plane of the truck bolster. Because of this, l have provided the iiller block 7 which engages against the under face of the body bolster 3 and is held in position by the flat key 8, which extends through the grooves 26-26 formed in the lower face of the said filler 7 and is received at its ends through the perforations 27-27 in the side walls of the base member 5. The said key is provided with Patented Nov. 2, 1920.Y
the head 28 at its inner end and the perforation 29 at its outer end to receive the cotter 30 which prevents its accidental displacement'. The said key also forms the upper bearing plate for engagement With the upper bearing face 2O of the anti-friction element G and is therefore preferably made of hardened steel.
F rom the foregoing description, it Will be observed that when in normal position the anti-friction element is mounted substantially midway between the 'ends of the chamber 9 of thefbase member 5 and is supported in its position by the stanchions mounted pon the tracks or Ways Withinlthe base member. Upon engagement of the antifrictiony member between the two holst-ers, thwsame is actuated in a direction dependent uponV the relative direction of movement of the boisters, as for instance, to the left. Upon extreme movement, the anti-friction element v(5 Will be carried to the position shown by the dotted lines in F ig. 1 and the stanchicns will be translated from their normal position shown in 'full lines vin Fig. 1 to the position illustrated by the dotted lines appearing in said figure of -the drawings.V ilpon release of the anti-friction element 6,
gravity Will return the stanchions and the anti-friction element to ytheir normal iposition, the stanchions being centered in their return movement by the registering openings in the under faces thereof and the lugs la upon the Ways or tracks provided therefor in the base member. The ends ofthe said tracks or Ways are provided With the shoulders 3l 'extending substantiallyY verticallj.7 of the base member and shaped as indicated at 32-32to conform substantially to the stanchions when engaged thereby and to prevent their movement beyond the combined center of gravity fof the stanchions and the anti-friction member 6.
lit `vvill `be apparent that the side bearing illustrated inthe drawings and showing an embodiment of my invention is one that can be cheaply made; that it is of simple construction, and that there inheres Within it an effective arrangement to insure the return of the anti-friction lelement 6 to its normal position underforce of gravity. it willalso be apparent that the invention may be embodied in other designs, and it will be understood that 1 contemplate and seelr to cover all such changes and modifications .in the claims following herein.
Y l claim:
1. in a device of the character described, the combination. with a bolster, of a base member secured thereto, an anti-friction element Within the base member, a filler block Vand a bearing plate, the filler block being mounted between the bearing plate and the bolster, the bearing plate comprising a key nation With a retaining member, of a r0ll ing, counterbalanced anti-'friction element, and coimterbalanced rolling supports to which said anti-friction element is journaled, said supports being in turn supported by the 'retaining member, the anti-friction element and the supporting elements being displaced from normal vequililnium to a position in unstable equilibrium upon actuation of the bearing in either direction from central'position and adapted to return to central position under the influence of gravity uponre'mova'l of the actuating force.
et. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a retaining member adapted to be secured 'to the under side of a body bolster; of a rolling counter-balanced anti-friction element.; and counter-balanced rolling supports separate from the anti-friction element to Which the latter is pivotally attached, said retaining member having an upper bearing surface on its interior on which'the upper partof the anti-'friction element isadapted to roll, said retainingmember having also supporting'ledges for said rolling supports.
In an anti-friction bearing of the character described, the combination With a hollow substantially rectangularV retaining member adapted to kbe secured tothe under ide of a body bolster of a car, said retaining` member having a removable bearing surface therein near the top thereof and horizontally extending supporting `ledges near Ythe bottom thereof on its opposite side Walls; of a rolling stanchion mounted on each of said ledges and adapted to rock back and forth ,and an anti-friction rocker, having concentric upperand lower bearing surfaces, pivotally supported on said stanchiens, the upper bearing surface of the anti-friction element vcooperating ivi-th said bearing surface of the retaining member and the lower Ibearing surface of the anti-friction elementexten'ding below the retaining membery and adapted to cooperate with an opposed bearing surface.
ln Witness lthat I claim the foregoing l have hereunto subscribedl my name this 9th day of Apr., 19.19. Y
Y JOHN l?. OOONNOR.
