To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN S. CARMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Making Molds, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which l have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present improved mold making machine is designed to combine in one structure mechanism both for jolting or jarring the mold box in order to pack the sand around the pattern, and for inverting said mold box and pattern and withdrawing the latter from the sand; The general type to which the machine belongs is that known as the roll-over type, in which the mold isturned over about a substantially central axis instead of being oscillated about an axis to its one side, as in the rock-over type of machine. In addition to thus combining jolting, inverting and drawing means in one machine, the present improvements include means for easily removing a mold from under the rollover table, as also various details of improvement connected with the foregoing features, all of which will be hereinafterfully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mech anism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

thus bringinga flask 4:, when the same is secured thereon, in conveniently accesslble position for filling with sand and for doing such tamping as may be found necessary. This roll-over table 3, which forms the central operative element of the machine is, along with the various other operative parts, supported on two end-frames or standards 5, one at each end that are in turn firmly secured to a bed-plate 6. 0n the latter is also centrally mounted a jarring cylinder 7, as will be presently more fully described. The end frames 5 are additionally supported by transverse bars 8 extending from either side of such jarring cylinder, as shown in Fig. 3.
The detailed construction of the jarring cylinder is not of interest in this connection, being not presented as a part of the present invention. It will suflice, accordingly, to note in Fig. 8 that a piston 9, reciprocable in said jarring cylinder, supports a platform or head 10 of general rectangular form sub stantially filling the space between the two side standards 5. ' being designed when in this position to receive the mold-box'or flask 4 and to have the latter filled with sand, said platform and table being jarred, as occasion requires, to pack the sand around the pattern plate which is directly secured to theface of the roll-over table. For operative purposes other than such jarring, the table is supported by means of trunnions 13 (see Figs.
2 and 6) extending'in opposite directions from side plates 14 forming part of the table structure, so as to lie in recesses 15 formed in the upper ends 16 of two plungers 17 vertically reciprocable in guides 18 formed in the respective end standards 5. The recesses '15 are in effect vertically extending slots of a length sufficient to permit the free up and down movement of the table in the jarring operation just referred to, without the trunnions contacting with either end of there Upon the plungers, however, being raised, the trunnions are engaged by the bottoms of the recesses and the table'th'us lifted bodily to an elevation sufficient to permit of the rolling over thereof in order to invert the pattern and attached flask or mold-box.
Actuation of theplungers 17 to thus elevate, the roll-over table is secured from a rock shaft 19 extending transversely of the machine in front of the jarring cylinder 7 and provided with two arms 20, one at each end, that are respectively connected by links 21 with the adjacent plungers. Rock shaft 19 is' in turn connected by means of another lever arm 22 with the piston rod 23 of a powerflcylinder 24 that is oscillatorily supported in trunnion bearings 25 alongside and slightly to the rear of the machine at the. bottom of the pit 1 in which the latter is located. The piston in said cylinder is conveniently actuated by means of compressed air, where the latter is utilized for operating the j olting mechanism, a' single valve 26 being arranged in the air-line 27 so as to control the supply of air to the cylinder of the jolting mechanism through a pipe 28 and to the cylinder 24 through a flexible connection 29.
Extending parallel with the piston rod 23 is another rod 30 fixed to the forward end,
of the cylinder and having on its outer end an adjustable nut31 forming a stop, with a second nut 32 for looking it in desired position on the rod. This fixed rod 30 engages a lug 33 depending downwardly from the lever arm and adapted to engage such stop. The adjustment of the stop on the rod is designed to be such that when the rollover table, with the moldbox attached thereto, is inverted and lowered, said lug will engage the stop and hold the parts in question, in
suspension, as it were.
This is to permit'the utilization of a leveling table of the kind described in United States Letters Patent Reissue No. 13,097, to receive the mold when released from the roll-over tablei Such leveling table in the present instance is in the form of a car or truck 34 movable along two parallel rails 35 disposed substantially on the level of the floor 2 and extending between and beyond the end standards 5 of the machine, so as not to interfere with the operations hereto fore described and yet permit of the positioning of the car directly under the'rollover table, when the latter is raised and inverted. Such car supports a series of de pressible members 36-(shown as four in number in Figs. 9'and 10, g. 2).), which are normally held in raised position by springs 37, so that when the bottom board of the mold comes in contact therewith, upon lowering the roll-over table, said members may be depressed more or less to conform with inequalities in such bottom board, the adjustment of the stop 31 on the rod preventing the complete compression of the springs under the members 36. Thereupon the members are locked by a lever 38 which forces two ill-shaped bars 39 outwardly through the medium of a double cam 40 connected with the inner end of said lever, the outer ends of said bars frictionally engaging the respective depressible members. When the members are thus locked, the mold-box may be detaohedfrom the roll-over table. without fear ofany yielding or settling which might otherwise damage the mold. V
The rolling over of the table 3 is designed 10L to be automatically effected incidentally to the raising of the latter by means of the rock-shaft l9 and its connections, as previously set forth. For this purpose a sheave 41 is formed integrally with each end 14 of the table concentric with'the trunnions 18, whereby said table is adapted to be supported on the plungers. Attached at one end to each such sheave is acable shown as a chain42 which in the normal position of lit the machine is wrapped partially around the sheave, as shown in Fig. 5, the other end of said chain being connected to a vertically disposed rod 43 passing through a recess or aperture 44 in the adjacent end frame 5 of .the machine. A nut 45 on the lower end of r the chain, the lower end of which is held eltl nee'asso against movement by reason of the engagement of the stop 45 on the rod 43 with the frame. 1
The table is shown in completely rolled over position in full lines in Fig. 4:, and is adapted to be locked in this position by means of a locking pin 47 carried in an arm 4-8 projectingiorwardly from the respective upper ends 16 of the plungers. As shown in Fig. 7 this locking pin is normally disposed inwardly by a compression spring as, but may be drawn outwardly by a hand-wheel 5O threaded thereon to bring its beveled head into engagement with a complementary recesigs1 51 in the adjacent end portion 1a of the ta e.
l' t ith the table thus locked, the plungers may be lowered, while still maintaining the table in its rolled over position, such lower ing movement'continuing until the lug 33 on the lever arm 22 contacts with'the stop 31, as already explained. After the table has thus been lowered and the mold box detached therefrom, the table is raised and the pattern withdrawn from the mold by raising the plungers .17 a second time, leaving the mold behind on the car 34:, ready to be drawn back from the machine on the traclr.
To return the table to its initial position it is next necessary to unlock the pin 4:7 by rotating the hand-wheel 50 in the opposite direction'to that previously described; then by lowering the plungers 17, giving a slight initial push to the table, the latter will swing around its trunnion axis and resume its normal position, as shown in lFig. '1, by the time the plungers are completely lowered.
The complete cycle of operations oi the machine may now be briefly reviewed. With the parts in their normal position as shown in Fig. 2, for example, the mold-boa: or flash l is placed on the roll=over table 3 and sand filled therein around the pattern, which latter is securely attached to the face of the table. As the filling proceeds the table is jarred one or more times by admitting air to the jarring cylinder through valve 26 and pipe 28, so as to pack the sand properly. When the mold box is finally "full, the bottom board lis placed in position and, together with the hon, clamped to the table, lsee Fig. 3). The plungers 17 are now raised by the admission of air to the actuating cylinder 2% through pipe Q9,the result of this operation being not only to elevate the table, but to roll the same over so that it occupies the position shown in full lines in Fig. d. The car 34- carrying the leveling table is moved along the rails 35 into position directly underneath the inverted mold box, which is thereupon lowered by exhausting the air from the actuating cylinder 24 until the bottom board of the mold box is brought into contact with the depressible members 36 on such car. After looking these members,
the clamping devices that secure the mold to movement of the table causes it to roll back I on its trunnions to its lower position, ready to receive another flash or mold box.
The modification in construction illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12 consists principally in tl'leutilization of two plungers 52 at each end oi the trams instead of: just one f (17) as already descrlbed. This is deslrable where unusually heavy loads are to be handled, and even in the smaller sizes of. the machine it obviously insures steadiness and accuracy in the movement of the roll-over table, this being particularly desirable when the table is raised to withdraw the pattern. To operate said two pairs of plungers, two roclr shafts 53 are employed, being connected with the respective plungers by means of arms 20 and linlrs 21. just as in the case of the single roclr shaft and single pair of plungers of the first described form of the machine. Each of these rock shafts, however, carries an additional arm 54- and said arms are connected by means of a link 55, whereby movement of the. one is imparted to the other in equal degree. For the purposeoi roclringthe shafts a power cylinder 56 is utilized similar to the one previously described, except that it is disposed inside instead of outside of the frame structure of the machine, being connected with the forward rock shaft by means of an arm fixed on said shaft and pivotally attached to the outer end of the piston rod 23. The arrangement oi the other parts'is substantially identical with the previous construction, and the same reference letters have been applied to such parts.

and agstop adapted tolimit the downward movement of said members, whereby said barrier may be suspended over said leveling table, substantially as described.

In mechanism of the character described, the combination of a jarring platform; a pattern-plate carrier normally resting on said platform; vertically reciprocable members adjacent to said platform, said members being normally out of engagement with said. carrier but adapted to raise the same clear of said platform; a track extending transversely of said platform; a truck provided with a leveling table and adapted to run on said track into and out of position between said platform and carrier in the raised position of the latter; a roclr shaft disposed transversely of said members and operatively connected therewith; a power cylinder and piston connected to roclc said shaft; and an adjustable stop'coiiperative with said piston to limit the downward movement of said members, whereby said carrier may be suspended over said leveling table, substantially as described.

15. ln mechanism of the character described, the combination of a platform; a roll-over pattern-plate carrier adapted in normal position to rest on said platform; vertically reciprocable members adjacent to said platform, adapted to raise said carrier normal iosition to rest on said latform vertically reciprocable members adjacent to said platform, adapted to raise said carrier clear thereof in order to permit the same to be rolled over; and adjustable means limiting the downward movement of said members to a position wherein they will support said carrier, when thus inverted, with moldboa: entirely clear of said platform.
