FRANK PARIZEK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WHISTLE AND IEDU'NTING.
Application filed. Apr-i1 16,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK PARIZEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in /Vhistles and Mountings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to whistles and more particularly to whistles of the type used for signaling purposes upon automobiles or similar vehicles.
In my application Serial No. 276,901, filed Feb. 14., 1919, I show; a whistle adapted for attachment to an internal combustion engine, which whistle is operable by the blast coming from said engine in the operation thereof to thus cause an actuation of the whistle and sound an alarm whenever the controlling apparatus for said whistle is manipulated by the occupant of the car from the dashboard. In mysaid application the whistle is shown as mounted directly upon the engine cylinder but I find that I can utilize the spark plug to carry the whistle in a satisfactory manner.
lvlly present invention concerns itself with the mounting of such a whistle upon the spark plug and the means for maintaining the mounting in its proper condition irrcspective of the violent vibrations and bumps to which the automobile or car is subjected in its operations.
I will describe one form which my invention may take more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating such form, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a spark plug and whistle connected together in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a detail View of a blank used for preventing dislocation of the parts.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 show a fragmentary portion of an engine cylinder 10 upon which is mounted a spark plug 11. The spark plug, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 has a hollow interior constituting a bore 12. A whistle 13 of the type shown in my said co-pending applica- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 290,404.
tion has an intake tube 14 through which blasts are transmitted from the engine cylinder during each explosion, these blasts actuating the whistle to sound an alarm.
My invention concerns itself particularly with the provision of means for mounting this whistle directly upon the spark plug, thus avoiding the necessity of a hole in the engine cylinder itself. The whistle is actuated by means of a cord 15 extending to the dashboard where it may be actuated by the occupant of the car.
In order to properly mount the Whistle 13 upon the spark plug in such a manner that it will not be subject to displacement due to jars during the operation of the vehicle, I provide a coupling 16, which coupling has a screw threaded extension 17, which screw threaded extension has engagement with a hole provided in the wall of the spark plug. The coupling also has means whereby the inlet tube is of the whistle has screw threaded engagement with said coupling so that a continuous passage is afiorded through the bore 12, through the coupling into the inlet tube is of the whistle. The coupling is square in cross-section, as more readily apparent from Figs. 1 and 2. This is done for the purpose of properly co-acting with means presently to be explained whereby the parts are held in position after being secured to gether.
In order to properly retain the coupling 16 in position upon the spark plug, provide a washer 18, which washer has a hole 19 through which the screw threaded extension 17 of the coupling 16 projects. This washer is freely rotatable upon this screw threaded extension when fingers 20, 20, and 21, 21 are unbent or occupy the position shown in Fig. 4:. After the parts are assembled together, however, the fingers 20 and the fingers 21 each project outwardly in the plane of the washer 18 or bent into the position shown more clearly in Fig. 2. Then these fingers are thus bent the coupling 16 can no longer be rotated relatively to the spark plug and these parts are thereupon in a locked position, thus making them immune to dislocation due to the vibrations of the car.
From what has been thus described the nature of my invention will be readily ap parent and it will also be understood that modifications thereof can readily be made within the scope of the appended claims. lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the character described the combinationwith a sparkplug whose interior communicates with the interior of an engine, and whose side wall has an opening therethrough communicating with the said interior, of a whistle having an inlet tube, a coupling for uniting said whistle and spark plug, screw threadedly engaging the opening in said spark plug wall, and means engaging the side wall of said spark plug for preventing rotation of said coupling when mounted in position.
2. In a device of the character described the combination with a sparkplug whose interior communicates with the interior of an engine, and whose wall. has an opening therethrough communicating with the said interior, or" a whistle having an inlet tube, a coupling for uniting said whistle and spark plug, screwthreadedly engaging the opening in said spark plug wall, and means for preventing rotation of said coupling when mounted in position, said means consisting of a washer interposed between said coupling and said sparkplug and having fingers bent to engage the flat sides of said coupling and sparkplug respectively.
3. In a device of the character described the combination with a sparkplug whose interior communicates with the interior of an engine, and whose wall has an opening therethrough communicating with the said interior, of a whistle having an inlet tube,
v coupling angular in cross section for uniting said whistle and sparkplug screwthreadedly engaging the opening in said spark plug wall, and means for preventingrotation of said coupling when mounted in position.
a. in a device of the character described the combination with a sparkplug, of whistle having an inlet tube, a coupling for uniting said whistle and sparkplug, said coupling being mounted in opening in the side wall of said spark plug, and means engaging the side wall of said spark plug for therethrough communicating with the said interior, of a whistle having an inlet tube, a coupling angular in cross section and hava flat outer wall for uniting said whistle and sparkplug screwthreadedly engaging the opening in said sparkplug wall, and means for preventing rotation of said coupling when mounted in position, said means consisting of a washer interposed. between said coupling and said sparkplug and having fingers bent to engage the fiat sides oi said coupling and sparkplug respectively.
7. In a device of the character described the combination of a spark plug, a whistle mounted upon and detachably connected to a side wall of said plug and separate means rigidly locking said whistle to said spark plug, said locking means engaging the side wall of said spark plug.
8. In a device of the character described the combination of spark plug having a hollow interior communicating with the interior of the engine on which the plug is used, and provided with an opening in the side thereof, and a whistle detachably mounted in said opening and communicatwith said hollow interior of the plug, and separate means rigidly locking said whistle to said spark plug, said locking means engaging the side wall of said spark plu 9. A. combined spark plug and whistle comprising a spark plug having hollow body provided with an opening in a side face thereof, said body being angular in cross section, a detachable whistle connected to the hollow of said spark plug through said opening and a locking means engaging one of the faces of said spark plug torigidly lock said whistle thereto.
in witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 10th day of April, A, 13., 1919.
FRANK PARIZEK.
