W. E. ELLIS.
AIR PUMP.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 17, 1920.
1,356,857, v Patented 0%, 26 1192a .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN E. ELLIS, or LEBO, KANsAs, AssrsNoa or ONE-HALF T0 WAYNE N.
TRAYLOR, OF LEBO, KANsAs.
. AIR-PUMP.
Application filed February 17, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVARREN E. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebo, in the county of Coffey and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Pumps, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The present invention has to do with im provements in hand operated air pumps, the object in view being to provide a construction capable of being cheaply manufactured while retaining the advantages and efficiency of a doubleacting pump device. 5
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pump constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and inclicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the pump cylinder which is constructed of a suitable diameter and length for the purposes of the device, said cylinder having at opposite sides longitudinally extending slots 2. At the lower end the cylinder is threaded to receive the closure cap 3 which is attached to the foot-piece or base 4, projecting laterally and detachably connected to said cap by means of the fastening member 5. The cap and base 45 if desired may be of integral construction. The upper end of the cylinder is closed by means of the screw plug 6 having the wrench hold extension 7 for screwing the plug in and out of the mouth of the cylinder. Mounted for reciprocation within the cylinder is a double headed piston or plunger 8, each head 8 of which is provided with the usual washer 9 detachably secured thereto by the fastening mem ber 10. The plunger is preferably reduced at its central portion to reduce friction and is formed with a transverse opening to re- Specification'of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1920. Serial No. 359,370]
ceive the cross pin 11 which projects through the slots 2 of the cylinder a suitable distance to receive the piston rods'12 attached to said pm by means of the nuts 13. These rods are arranged one at each'side of the piston and are connected at their upper ends to the handle 14:. The piston rods are supported and guided by means of the plate 14 which is detachably secured to the head 7 of the screw plug 6 hereinbefore referred to by the. The plate is provided to which the-invention appertainsp 7 It will be apparent from the foregoing that manipulation of the handle 14 upwardly and downwardly will force the air alternately from the top and from the bottom of the cylinder through the air conduit 16 which is connected to the top and to the bottom of the cylinder respectively, a check valve 17 being arranged at both the top and bottom as customary. A flexible attaching tube 18 is connected to this air tube 16 in the manner shown in the drawing, either at the top or the bottom, the latter preferably. The tube 16 it may be added is bent inwardly at an intermediate point indicated which might result in injury to the air line.
This construction of pump eliminates the necessity for providing a double cylinder construction and therefore necessarily representsa saving in expense of manufacture, and the elimination of packing glands by such construction is obviously advantageous in that the life of the device is thereby prolonged. I
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is v 1'. An air pump comprlslng a cylinder base for the pump and the other a guide for said piston rods.
2. A manually operated pump comprising open at both ends and having lateral slots I midway thereof, a piston or'plunger slidably mounted in said cylinder, opposite piston an open ended cylinder having longitudinally extending slots midway thereof, a double headed piston or plunger reciprocally mounted in said cylinder, a cross pin extendin through the plunger and the slots of the cylinder, a base plate detachably connected to the lower end of said cylinder and closing said end, a guide member having apertures therein detachably connected to and closing the opposite end of said cylinder, oppositely arranged piston rods connected to said cross pin to manipulate the piston, said piston rods passing through the apertures in the guide member, and a handle intermediate said piston rods.
Ii pump comprising a cylinder having oppositely arranged longitudinally extending slots therethrough, a pistonor plunger mounted in said cylinder, a closure cap detachably connected to the lower end of said cylinder and closing said end, a base detachably connected to said closure cap, a detachable plug closing the upper end of said cylinder, a guide plate having an aperture at each end thereof, a detachable fastening ele ment securing said guide plate to the screw plug, piston rods passing through the apertures of said guide plate and having a handle connected thereto at one end, a cross pin extending through the piston and the slots of the cylinder to which the piston rods are connected for manipulating the piston, an air outlet at the upper end of said cylinder and in the closure cap at the lower end thereof, and an air conduit connected to said air outlets. V
4. A hand operated air pump of the class described comprising a cylinder having oppositely arranged slots therethrough, a base detachably connected to the lower end of the cylinder and closing said end, a screw plug closing the opposite end of said cylinder, a guide plate having an aperture at each end thereof, a detachable fastening element securin said guide plate to the closure plug, piston rods passing through the apertures of said guide plate and having a handle connected thereto at one end, a cross pin extending through the piston and the slots of the cylinder to which the piston rods are connected for manipulating the piston, an air conduit connected with the opposite ends of said cylinder, and check valves mounted in said air conduit adjacent to the respective ends of the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
